Welcome to St.Colman's Carillon website.

St. Colman's Cathedral

The carillon is located in the magnificent St. Colman's Cathedral overlooking Cobh town and Cork Harbour. This beautiful setting is appropriate for an instrument that is considered one of the best examples of its genre. The 49-bell Carillon of St. Colman's Cathedral in Cobh is the only such instrument in this country and is the largest in Ireland and Britain. It also includes Ireland's largest bell, named St. Colman (3.6 tons). The carillon is played from a console within the belfry, consisting of a keyboard and a pedalboard. The action is completely mechanical and there is no artificial assist.

85th Summer Recital Season 2012

Free hour-long recitals will take place on Sundays at 4.30 p.m. from May to September and are usually given by Adrian Gebruers KSG, Cathedral Carillonneur.

As always, there will also be a number of guest recitals presented by leading international carillonneurs, as follows:-

  • Sunday July 29th: Olesya Rostovskaya (Russia). Carillonneur Graduate of St Petersburg State University and of the Royal Carillon School in Mechelen (Flanders).
  • Sunday August 5th: Geert D’hollander (Belgium). International carillonneur recitalist and teacher in carillon composition at the Royal Carillon School in Mechelen (Flanders).
  • Sunday August 12th: Vegar Sandholt (Norway). Carillonneur of Oslo City Hall and Bærum City Hall.
  • Sunday August 26th: Gordon Slater (Canada). Dominion Carillonneur Emeritus of the Peace Tower Carillon in Ottawa. Marking National Heritage Week.

To commemorate the centenary year of the sinking of the “Titanic”, whose last port of call was Cobh (then known as Queenstown), the 2012 Carillon Recital Season will include musical tributes to the liner’s bandleader Wallace Hartley and his seven colleagues. These brave musicians remained at their post to the end, playing on during the final hours to support and comfort the passengers, and perished with the ship.

Full programme details available at the Cathedral at time of recitals. A closed-circuit system is in operation showing the carillonneur playing the instrument. This can be viewed inside the Cathedral at the base of the tower – turn right as you enter through the main door.

Grant aided by the Arts Council, Cork County Council and the Cobh Town Council.
