Clann
na nGael 2-6 St Brigids 2-5
All county finals are hard won but this one will rank up there with one of the hardest fought battles over 2 weekends. After extra-time had failed to separate the sides the first time out in Knockcroghery, there was still no more than a kick of a ball between these two gallant teams in Feurty on Sunday evening last. Clann played with the aid of a strong breeze in the first half and were immediately hit with a sucker punch when the St Brigids full forward struck Sarah O’Rourke finished a good move to the back of the Clann net. This was St Brigids only score against the elements but they defended stoutly to keep the Clann attack at bay. Ciara Quinn and Shauna Bannon scored points for Clann before a Sarah O’ Sullivan free ended up in the back of the St Brigids net. But despite all the possession Clann failed to add to there tally and it looked ominous at half –time with only a two point lead. But the girls came out in the second half prepared to battle and the defence with Ciara Costello and Aoibhin Golden particularly prominent mopping up plenty of ball. A close range left footed point from Marrissa Murray was soon added to by a Shauna Bannon point. St Brigids midfielder Nicole Nestor was keeping St Brigids in the game with several long-range frees before a Ciara Quinn point on the run extended Clann’s lead. Clann had plenty of chances but it was a speculative shot from Nicole Meehan which got a touch from Orla Shine that ended up in the St Brigids net to put 5 points between the teams. Shauna Bannon got another point before the St Brigids fightback. A pointed free was followed by a long range effort which was well blocked by Carol Griffin in the Clann goal only for the St Brigids corner- forward to poke home the rebound. Another St Brigids point left the minimum between the teams as the game went into injury time amid a welter of excitement. St Brigids fans celebrated a goal prematurely as the ball came back of the stanchion but it was outside the Clann post much to the relief of the Clann supporters. St Brigids Nicole Nestor took the resultant “45” which hit the upright and as Clann’s Aoibhin Golden collected the rebound referee Marty Parker sounded the full-time whistle.
County Board Chairman Martin McDermott presented the Cup to Captain Ciara Costello amid much excitement afterwards. The Club would like to thank all that helped out in Johnstown over both weekends with refreshments, bonfires and presentations, all the parents for all their co-operation over a long year and the girls for their dedication and enthusiasm.
It’s the 2nd U-12 title in a row with Peter “Cody” Shine looking for the 3-in-a-row next year. It’s also the 3rd time in the clubs history (2000, 2002 and 2008) where they have completed the U-12 double in the same year with twins Cian and Saoirse McManus and their cousins Killian and Shauna Bannon making it a exiting few weeks for their families.
