Clann na nGael 3-13 St Marys 2-06
Pride
of place this week goes to the Tom Nolan & Co sponsored U-14 girl’s team who
secured the Championship and Feile double with a
great victory over a strong St Marys team in Kilglass. Although the score line suggests an easy win,
this was anything but, as with less than 10 minutes to go the result was very
much in doubt but the Clann girls dug deep and
finished in style scoring 1-5 without reply. The manner of victory very much
sums up this bunch of girls as work rate and determination are attributes which
they bring to every game on top of their football abilities. The match started
off as the Kayleigh Dunning Show and she proceeded to
score 1-4 as she ran at the St Mary’s defence, the
goal was brilliantly placed in the corner. Karen Nicholson added her second
point from a free before Anna Shine was unlucky to see her shot come back off
the crossbar, before picking up the rebound herself and firing over the bar to
leave the half-time score 1-7 to 0-3 in Clann’s favour. Clann’s defence as a whole had performed very well in the first
half with Leanne O’Connor, Gillian Wall and Ellen Harney dominant but
increasingly they came under pressure in the second half as St Mary’s
mounted a fight back to reduce the lead to 2 points. Rebecca Naughton then
slotted a brilliant penalty into the bottom left corner but St Marys came straight down to score a second goal. There was
less than 10 minutes to go but the Clann midfield of Orla O’Neill and Rebecca Naughton took over and they closed
out the match. Rebecca scored three points, Karen Nicholson scored her fourth
point and Orla O’Neill finished a great left footed
point under pressure. Substitute Saoirse McManus
struck a goal with a neat finish over the goalkeeper into the roof of the net
to give Clann a ten point winning margin. There were
great performances from all over with Katie Rock solid in defence
in the second half along with Gillian Wall, Karen Nicholson and Kayleigh Dunning prolific in attack and substitutes Deirdre
Ward, Saoirse McManus and Anna Shine also making
strong contributions. Player of The Match however went to Rebecca Naughton who
never stopped running and carrying the game to St Marys.
Captain Karen Nicholson received the Cup from County Secretary Francie Keane and thanked everone
including the management team of Kevin Naughton, Terry O’Neill and Mickey
Dunning.
