Jack Tierney - Always Making Progress

Jack Tierney was never a man to let the grass grow under his feet. Even as a young apprentice fitter in Bord na Mona neighbours in Allenwood recall his construction from the ground up of a beautiful caravan - and all in his spare time at that!!

Like many of his generation Jack emigrated to England returning after a number of years to involve himself in a diverse range of business ventures in his native Kildare. Many will remember him with the ownership of the "Rising Sun" cabaret lounge in Brownstown, which under his stewardship became one of the top cabaret ventures in the country.

But Jack always dabbled in the construction industry and another of his projects was a heavy involvement with Pa Dunne in laying the pipes for the Allenwood group water scheme. In later years Tarmel builder's providers in Newbridge came on stream, carrying a really comprehensive stock of hardware and household requirements.

The acquisition of the old Stand House pub on the Curragh and its conversion into the state of the art Hotel complex that we have today has perhaps been one of the main jewels in the Tierney crown. The natural progression to the recently opened "Eyre Powell" hotel in Main St. Newbridge proves that for Jack Tierney time never stands still. Now in the pipeline is another venture into the hotel business with the proposed opening of yet another top class establishment at Killashee near Naas.

Jack is a man who has never forgotten his roots. He and his wife, Jenny, have been generous to a fault with Allenwood over a number of years.

Never before was that generosity better exemplified than in the regal manner in which we were treated when we held our 40th anniversary dinner in the Stand House Hotel a couple of years ago.

Jack played on Allenwood school teams in his early youth. John McNally has vivid recollections of his wining a medal at an inter-schools tournament in Miss Gregg's fabled fields in Kilmeague in the early 50's. By all accounts his mother Nan, a quite remarkable lady acted as "team Manager" on the day - indeed a woman before her time.

Jack has been our sponsor for many years through the "Eyre Powell" and the "Stand House". We thank him for his generosity and his loyalty to this community. We look forward to mutually beneficial relations between this club and this faithful son of Allenwood for a long time to come.
