The 3rd Annual Cavan Crystal Hotel Annalee AC Road Race was held on a beautiful sunny day on November 20th. A record field of nearly 200 entries were registered for the main event, the 5 mile road race around Cavan town. Another 140 athletes entered in the juvenile races. The event attracted top class athletes came from all 4 provinces and as far away as Cork, Derry, Ennis and Mayo in recognition of the growing stature of the road race with 33 athletic clubs represented. The President of the Athletics Association of Ireland, Michael Heery attended in support of the event. A large contingent ran or walked the course to raise funds for this year’s designated charity, the Special Care Baby Unit at Cavan General Hospital. Months of preparation by the Organising Committee paid off with all events running smoothly on the day. Annalee AC wishes to thank all those who volunteered on the day to help with stewarding and registration, the Gardai, the Civil Defense and Cavan County Council. Special thanks must go the sponsors of the event, Cavan Crystal Hotel, Cavan Crystal Design, Toymaster, Brady’s Arva Ltd, Meadow View Inn, Abbeyset Print, McCarrens, SuperValu, Woodies DIY, Sportsworld, The Sportshop, Lifestyle, Kingscourt Bricks, Univet and Shire developments.

The race was started opposite the Cavan Crystal Hotel and continued onto the bypass towards Butlersbridge, down onto the Cootehill Road, onto Main street, by the cathedral, courthouse and new library building. The tough finishing stretch was up the Dublin road with the Finish line outside the Cavan Crystal Hotel. The athletes got a good view of Cavan town and hopefully inspired some of the onlookers to take up athletics in the near future. Cavan has a proud tradition in national and International athletics. The race has been described as the premier athletics event in this area and the main aim is to publicise sporting activity and to promote athletics in the County.

The Senior men’s race was won by the in form Gerry Ryan of Galway, retaining his 2004 title. He finished well clear of second place with a very fast time of 24 minutes and 42 seconds. Gerry is a well known athlete nationally and this year won the AAI National Half Marathon Championship. Pauline Curley of Tullamore Harriers won the Women’s Senior Race in a time of 28 minutes and 47 seconds. Pauline has been in superb form winning the adidas Dublin Half Marathon, the Longford Half Marathon and the adidas Frank Duffy 10 mile races. Monaghan Phoenix athletes Karl Kildea and Deljim Pimntel were second and third respectively in the Senior Men’s race. Only two seconds separated the 2nd, 3rd and 4th positions with John Byrne just edged into 4th place. The first Cavan athlete home was Martin Fulton of Bailieboro AC who finished 5th in 27:02. Julie Butler was second in the women’s race followed by Veronica Colleran of Ennis Track. Another Baileboro athlete, Emily Meehan finished in 4th followed by the Annalee AC athlete, Sinead Nolan in 5th.  Fellow Cavan athlete Arlene Smith made a welcome return to running finishing 6th.

Teams from North East AC, Drogheda, Omagh, Bohermeen AC, Mullingar, Bailieboro, Shercock, Monaghan Phoenix, Kilmurry Bricken and Roscommon competed for the Club honours with Bohermeen AC winning. The North East club and Monaghan Phoenix teams finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. Mullingar won the female team trophy. A welcome addition to the race this year was the opportunity for nonathletics clubs to submit teams in a separate race category. This was won by Kill GFC with Cavan Rugby Club in second.

The juvenile races were run off on the unopened section of the new bypass. 143 athletes participated in the races which were held in the U9, U10, U12, U14 and U16 categories. The juvenile races were generously sponsored by Toymaster and Francis Clarke of Toymaster attended the prizegiving for the successful athletes. The number of races and categories were increased this year to allow for the increased numbers of young athletes in local clubs. There were entries from Annalee AC, Mullahoran, Innyvale, Drumlin, Baileboro, Shercock, 3 Ways, Monaghan Phoenix and Navan AC.
