Boxers Triumph Against Clare
(Connacht Tribune Loughrea Notes)
Two
boxers from the Loughrea Boxing Club were victorious in the annual inter-county
tournament with Clare. It was held in the Cooley Hall, home of the newly formed
club in Peterswell. Both boys were having their first competitive outing of
the season and won in contrasting styles. At Boy2 48Kg Robert Kerins was on
top from the start and was always too strong and skilful for his opponent
James Keenan from the Ennis club. Kerins, whose father was member of the old
Gort club, won on a score of 23-11 and hopes are high that he will add a Connacht
title to the Galway championship he won last year. At Youth1 64Kg Jake McNally
was renewing acquaintances with Sean McCormack from the West Clare club. This
was the third meeting with honours even. As in previous contests, McCormack
threw the stronger punches but was unable to catch fast moving McNally. The
final score of 14-11 in favour of McNally was a fair reflection of McNally's
superior skills. In a supporting contest at the end of the tournament, James
Fahy from the local club took on Loughrea's Patrick Mongan. Fahy's determination
to win on home soil was the deciding factor, winning on a score of 22-19.
More boxers from the club are in action in the Tuam tournament on Sunday next.
