Priests of the Parish of Aughavas
Cloone, Aughavas and Gortletteragh once formed the Parish of Cloone. The dates when they became separate
Parishes is unclear. But we know that certainly by 1820 if not long before Aughavas had its own Parish Priest.
The dates give below are taken from the 'Chronicon' of the Parish of Aughavas and from the history of the
Diocese of Ardagh by Bishop James Joseph McNamee.
The records for the Parish of Aughavas date from 1845. It must have been difficult to keep records given all the
difficulties of the time. The priests resided in different houses in the Parish until the first Parochial House was built
in Aughavas in 1890. Parochial Houses or Presbyteries were not built in all parishes of the Diocese until the
early nineteen hundreds.
