Oldcastle History |
MESSAGE |
I am working in Canada for a documentary series which will explore the life of a family who lived in Oldcastle in the 1820's and emigrated to Canada around 1826. I am looking for someone who knows well the area and is familiar with the history of Oldcaslte and surroundings in the beginning of the 19th century and the Great Famine that conducted many people to leave Ireland.
I thought your Historical Society could refer someone to me. Thank you very much,
Manuelle Légaré for the Canadian tv adaptation of the documentary series - Who do you think you are?

Lord Rotheram'estate |
MESSAGE |
Dear Sirs,
I have found your web site to be most informative, and wonder if you can help me. My grandfather Robert Fannin was land stewart to Lord Rotherham until about 1946 and lived in a house called 'Knockrath' between Kells and Oldcastle, where I spent my summer holidays. Recently we discovered a long lost 40 page 'story' signed by M.C.R., a female, perhaps a Rotherham daughter, describing the take-over of the estate by flying columns during the war of independence. This is extremely well written, humorous and even a professional style.
What to do with this ? Can you tell me where Rotherham lived,? Was it close to Knockrath ?
As you can imagine I think this is an important find.
Yours sincerely,
Samuel Fannin / samuelfannin@gmail.com |

Meath Field Names Project - website |
MESSAGE |
Hello,
The first stage of the website for Meath Field Names Project has recently gone live.
The address is www.meathfieldnames.com
We would appreciate if you could set up a link from your site Ballinacree Historical Society to this website.
In turn we plan to link to your site when we set up our links page.
Over the coming months we will be enhancing and improving this site. We plan to embed an interactive mapping section into the site. A browser will start with a map of Meath; they will be able to zoom in on the part of the County they are interested in. They can then zoom in on their chosen townland. At this point the field names will appear on the fields within the townland. It will be possible for the browser to click on any individual field and the details gathered about that field (history, features, folklore etc) will pop up.
We are working on this at present.
We will officially launch this website at the same time as our book publication in April / May of this year.
Thank you in advance for your assistance. Should you have any queries please contact us.
Regards

My paternal Grandmother |
MESSAGE |
Good afternoon,
my name is Gary Smith and I live and work in Bedfordshire, England.
I am currently trying to trace back my family history on my Father side, as previously I knew very little about them, and have discovered that my Grandmother (Rose Smith - nee Slowey) was born (in 1898) in Co Galway. After tracing things a little further I discovered that she left Ireland at an early age (not quite sure exactly when just yet) to live and work in Watford, England.
Here she met and married my Grandfather (James Albert Smith) and they had two sons (Gordon - my Dad & Raymond - his younger brother), Rose and James lived together for many years in Abbots Langley, Hertfordshire but the records for Rose go cold after 1970.
Following further research, I have discovered that for some reason she left England at some point after 1970 to return to Ireland without her Husband (I assume prior to or shortly after her passing) and, have found a Rose Smith that was buried at Oldcastle cemetary, Mount Nugent in August 1974 (service performed by Fr Michael Troy).
My question is, can anyone advise of any further information (place or residence prior to passing / husbands or children's names etc) that could help me either confirm or not that this was in fact my Grandmother?
Many thanks for your time in reading this mail, and for anything that you can add to my research as I'd love to come over and visit her grave.
Kind regards
Gary Smith / Gary.Smith@beds.ac.uk
