You are welcome to the

We presume that the majority of
our visitors will be people who know something about the place. Some may once
have lived there but now are far away. For those who do not know the area it
lies a few miles to the north west of the town of Oldcastle. Most of the
half-parish of Ballinacree (the other half is Mountnugent) is in Co. Meath but
-parts of it are also in Cavan and Westmeath. (Despite this cultural mix the
natives live in healthy harmony, except occasionally in the months of July or
August when football fever is sometimes diagnosed.)
As part of the Millennium Celebrations some 60 members of the local community (loosely known as the Historical Society) worked together to produce " Images of Ballinacree" a fascinating collection of photos and documents covering life in the area during the 20th century. The exhibition was hugely popular and was put on again in August 2000. Many people, particularly those from Ballinacree who live abroad, have often asked if it will be shown again. Possibly! One way of meeting the request is to present the limited number of photos which we show here. Our second exhibition "Ballinacree 2003" was an exhibition of photographs taken by local people during 2003 documenting every aspect of community life in Ballinacree at that time. In September 2006 as part of Heritage Week, we held our third exhibition "A Celebration of our Schools Past and Present". It was an interesting display of educational records, school photos, books, roll books and examples of needlework from our National Schools. A historical talk by historian Antonia McManus on "The Hedge Schools of Ireland and its Books" also took place. This website is the product of the voluntary effort of a few people from Ballinacree. If you feel like writing a note, we would be delighted to hear from you. Perhaps you have suggestions, photos, or you’d like to write something yourself. Anyway this is a start, you would never know how things might develop. You can contact us at: ballinacree2008@eircom.net |
