The
Ballinlough Unit was founded by Walter McGrath in 1963 as
Ballinlough was one of the few parishes in the City without a Scout
Unit. In 1963 the 38th Cork was founded and 3 years later the
40th Cork was founded.
The Unit has gone from
strenght to strength and currently has one Beaver colony, 2 Macaoimh
caths, 1 Scout troop and 1 Venturer group and caters for
approximately 140 young people in the area on a weekly basis through
weekly meetings and a very active programme of hikes, weekends and
other activities. All sections are currently full and the next
registration will take place in September 2001.
Camp
2000 to Switzerland
This
year to celebrate the year 2000 our region went to Kandersteg in
Switzerland for camp. This was our units second time visiting
this international scout centre. The camp took place from 1st
15th July and was enjoyed by all. Check out out account of the event
here.
Annual
Camps since 1963 !
One
of our current online projects is to provide an onl;ine history of our
unit. As part of this project we are attempting to record all
the camps that we have been to and where possible to provide at least
a group photo of each camp. If you were a former member of our unit
and have some old photos then you can help by contacting us. A listing
of all the camps has already been compiled and some photos have
already been included.
Vacancies
for Leaders
A
number of vacancies for leaders currently exist within the Unit.
Potential leaders must be over 18 and there is no upper
age limit. No previous involvement in scouting is required as full formal
training will be provided during the year. New leader will be
placed with experienced leaders and are not required to run sections by
themselves, but to act as part of a team.
