What is Semaphore ?
Learning Semaphore
Semaphore is a system of communication using flags.  There are 2 stations a sender and reciever and they must be able to clearly see the other station.

For long distance communication, there could be a number of repeater stations between the sender and reciever.  Generally a station comprses of 2 people.

Semaphore is normally learned by using "circles". Each circle is represents a series of letters.  The circles start with the letters A H O T J W.

To begin with circle A only the right hand moves to the different positions.  With circle H the left hand stays in the first position and the right hands move to the remaining portions.

Semephore Stations
Semephore Codes
When sending a semaphore message there is a sending and receiving station.  The receiving station also has a person with flags to give the appropriate responses to allow the sender to continue.

Both signallers should stand against a clear unobstructed background so they can be clearly seen.

As well as sending messages a semaphore station uses some simple codes to indicate that it is opening up, closing down or finished sending a message for example.  Many of these codes require a response, to say that the reciver is ready, has received the message or needs parts repeated.

Normally we have 2 people at each station. One sending signals and the other watching for responses and taking them down.
