Autumn 2007.............(Posted 11th Sep 07)

Now that the Autumn events have started, lets have a quick preview of what is coming up...

1) Next Sunday the 16th of September, we are holding the
Cliona Callanan memorial event. Net proceeds will go to the Cork Children’s Leukaemia Association. Cliona was a member of BOC who sadly passed away about 2 years ago. This event will be held in Doneraile Forest Park which is a very nice area with plenty of mature trees and paths. Some details about last years event can be seen further down this page.
For a poster for this event, see this link

2) We have events nearly every Sunday from now until the end of the year. Besides revisiting some of the usual woods, the following might be of special interest
a) Sun 14th Oct...Mondeligo Wood. This wood can look spectacular as the trees turn red and show off their Autumn colours at this time of year.
b) Sun 5th Nov...Slieveowen Wood. This is only the 2nd time that we have used this wood and the ground should be new to nearly everyone.
c) Sun 25th Nov...Gurteen Wood. This is a brand new area and was only mapped by Sean Cotter recently. It is near the town of Ballyhooly on the Northern slopes of the Nagle Mountains.
d) Sun 23rd Dec...Kilbarry Wood. This event, just 2 days before Christmas is another new area near Fermoy. It is just off the road to Tallow.

3) The Bank Holiday Weekend in October looks like it is going to be very busy.
On Saturday the 28th, the Irish Orienteering Championships are on in Wexford.
On Sunday the 29th, the Munster Orienteering Championships are in Mahon Falls in Waterford and
on the Monday the 30th, we have one of our own events in Curragh Wood near Midleton.
The championship events are pre-entry. No more details to hand at present.

4) For those of you who want to try something different, Cork-O are holding 3 mountain bike orienteering events on Saturdays in October and November. The dates and venues are...
Garrettstown Wood...20th of Oct, Corrin Hill...10th of Nov and Clonmore North...17th of Nov.

5) Electronic Punching. We will be using  SI electronic punching on our Blue and Green courses soon. With this in mind, you can now purchase SI cards from BOC for €35.
For those of you new to electronic punching, a quick explanation...this little SI card is like a small key which fits onto your index finger. You no longer use a card and punch. You just insert the key into a box at each control and all your data is loaded onto a computer at the end. The really good part of this system comes when the results are uploaded onto a website and you can check your splits and times versus everyone else.

Just a quick look at what is coming up for the Summer of 2007 -
1) We have our usual Thursday evening events for May and we will be trying out a new type of orienteering called 'Parks Orienteering' for June and July. We will be holding these events at new locations in Cork City.

2) Shamrock 3 Day event. Cork Orienteering Club are holding their bi-annual 'Shamrock' 3-day event near Bantry in West Cork on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of June. For more info and entries, check out this link
http://www.corko.net/shamrock
The official closing date is Wednesday, the 2nd of May with increased fees for entries after that date. If you are interested, send them a mail.

Just a quick look at what is coming up in the Spring of 2007....

BOC Sunday Events........We have an event every Sunday from now until the end of April. As well as the usual locations, we will be introducing 3 new areas in April. Knockawaddra Wood has only just been recently mapped and this will be the first orienteering event at this location. It is located just off the Clonakilty to Dunmanway road in West Cork. The 2nd area sees a return to Rathbarry but this time to Long Strand beach and the sand dunes there. This dune complex is about 1 km long and makes a nice contrast to orienteering in the woods. This again has only recently been mapped and is the only orienteering event in Cork that uses sand dunes for an event. And the 3rd new area is Slieveowen Wood near Coppeen in West Cork, about 45 minutes from Cork City.

Ballyhoura 2 Day...........This annual 2 day event is coming up in mid March in the very scenic Ballyhoura mountains in South County Limerick. These events used to take 75 minutes to get to from Cork city but now that the new Fermoy bypass is open, the journey time from the City should be about the hour mark.

Leinster Championships...........These are on the 1st of April. This year they are on in County Wexford which should be less than a 3 hour drive from Cork. Location to be decided. This event is pre-entry so look out for details in February.

Irish Orienteering Championships..........This year they are on at the end of April up in Fermanagh. Again, it is pre-entry so anyone planning to make the long trip up should keep a lookout for entry forms from February onwards.

Some photos...........this one was taken by Pat Murphy in Rathbarry Wood in December. Pat called it the 'Elbow Tree', not sure if that is it's real name or was it just named on the day!!
....and this one was taken by Terry Ley in Rostellan on a very windy New Years Eve. While Jim Callanan was out collecting controls after the event, this tree fell over and just missed Jim's car.
The fact that Terry had reversed into the tree a few seconds earlier had nothing to do with it falling.

Special Charity Event for Cork Children's Leukaemia Association. Top of Page
Bishopstown OC held a special event on Sunday, the 17th of September in Doneraile Forest Park to raise funds for the Cork Children's Leukaemia Association. The event was in memory of Cliona Callanan who was a former member of BOC and sadly passed away last year. All proceeds from the event and additional donations were given to the CCLA.
Information on the Cork Children's Leukaemia Association can be found at : http://www.cla.ie
The day turned out to be a great success with over 200 people taking part and in excess of €2,300 was collected. Thanks to everyone who turned up and donated.

BOC - 2006/2007 season begins
Top of Page
The new fixtures list for Bishopstown Orienteering Club is now up on the website. We have an event nearly every week between the start of September to the end of July 2007. The new season gets going again with an event in Rostellan Wood in East Cork on the 9th of September. Note that this is on Saturday, not Sunday. This is followed a week later with an event on Sunday, the 17th of September in Doneraile Park. This really is a very nice spot with some magnificient trees from the old estate in a superb setting. This is one you should really try to get to.
As well as having all the usual regular spots for 2006/7, we also have a number of new locations. We have 2 new areas near Rathbarry near Clonakilty, very close to Castlefreke castle. Rathbarry is a very quaint little village and was a county winner of the Tidy Towns competition a few years ago. We have one event in Rathbarry Woods and one in the sand dunes on Long Strand which should be good. Staying in the same general area, we have 2 other new areas with Knockawaddra near the Clonakilty / Dunmanway road and Slieveowen near Coppeen.
In 2007, we will be trying a new format for the evening events. For the months of April and May, we will have our usual evening events with a choice of 2 courses. For the Summer months of June and July, we are introducing a new style of event called 'Parks Orienteering'.  These will be held in the Lee Fields, the Marina Park near Pairc Ui Chaoimh, the Glen Amenity Park, Curraheen, Murphy's Farm in Curraheen and in Clashduv Park in Togher. As an introduction, we will be holding a 'Parks Orienteering' event on Wednesday, the 27th of December if you want to see what it is like.

Top of Page
Sat 25th Feb 2006 - As you can probably see, the BOC web site is being re-arranged at the moment so some of the pages might appear different in appearance as you move around the site. Hopefully when the process is finished, the following targets will be achieved :
a) It will be easier to navigate around the site
b) The appearance will be improved
c) More information will be provided about major orienteering events and related news on the BOC Newspage.
d) The quality of the 'Location of Events' page will be improved to make it easier for people to find the location of some of the events.

Feedback & Comments, positive or otherwise please to John Desmond

More Changes......1st Apr 06. The BOC links page has now been updated. This page now contains links to all the main clubs in Munster, links to shops for Orienteering gear and a few other orienteering items that may be of interest.

Cork City ’s First Permanent Orienteering Course – The Glen Amenity Park Top of Page
"The city’s first permanent orienteering course was set up recently in the Glen Amenity Park, the Glen. Neighbouring primary and secondary school teachers and youth group leaders attended an introduction to orienteering and navigation skills at the Park with the aim of encouraging them to make better use of this facility in a healthy and active manner.
All members of the public are welcome to use the permanent orienteering course in the Glen Amenity Park. Permanent markers are in place around the Park with set courses planned out by an experienced map maker and orienteering expert. Packs which include maps, instructions, course layouts etc. can be obtained free of charge from the Recreation, Amenity and Culture Dept, Abbey Court House, Georges Quay or by phoning the S.D.O. on 021-4924741."..........from the Cork Corporation Website.
