Planners Comments – Petranka Pacheva:

"Changing the event from the Maharees to Inch did not give enough time to make the courses as good as possible. I hope that all the competitors enjoyed the event."

Controllers comments – John O’Callaghan:

"The change of venue at short notice meant that the planning and controlling of the event took place in a 4 week period. The planning was complicated by the need to avoid using control sites/legs used in the Irish championships earlier in the year. Petranka succeeded in overcoming these obstacles and the courses were of a high standard.
One control (number 147) was placed incorrectly, being some 15-20 meters east of the correct site. Some competitors commented on this either at the finish or to me at the download station, however in the absence of any formal complaint I decided not to void any of the courses concerned. I apologise to the competitors affected by this mistake.
One competitor who started the Munster Championships left without either downloading her SI card or reporting to the download point, this is not acceptable behaviour as it makes accounting for competitors difficult to say the least. In this case we were able to establish that the individual had returned safely so no real harm was done, but we could still be searching ………!
I would like to thank Kerry Orienteers for letting us use the area, as the alternative was to cancel the event. I also thank the people that helped out before, during and after the event."

Maharees sand dunes: Permission was granted to us last spring by the landowners in Maharees to run the Munster Champs there in October. The MOA held a meeting on Friday 24th September. Early the following morning, Saturday 25th Sept, the MOC Controller, Planner and Organiser visited Maharees to check out the proposed control sites. We called into the local landowners, as we always do out of a matter of courtesy, and they informed us that they were allowing nobody onto the sand dunes since the previous week and that included orienteering.
Most of the landowner’s income comes from the Mobile Homes situated on their lands. This goes back to forty years and more. Apparently they were set up with the approval of Kerry County Council (KCC). Over the years extra mobile homes were added and recently some of the landowners applied to KCC for permission to retain the extra mobile homes. Permission to retain the mobile homes was granted by KCC a few months ago.
Then AN TAISCE came on the scene and they objected to the decision made by KCC and appealed it to An Bord Planeala where the KCC decision was reversed.
The An Taisce member who lodged the objection was seen by the local landowners at the IOC Relays event in the Maharees last May and as a result is now associated, in their eyes, with orienteering and / or Kerry O / BOC.
Within a few days of cancelling Maharees we were able with the co-operation of Kerry O and after consultation with IOA Technical Officer, Trina Cleary, to change the venue to Inch sand dunes. It took a few days to contact the Inch farmer to get his permission for Monday instead of the Sunday. People were then immediately notified of the change. Special thanks to Kerry O for allowing the MOC to go ahead this year. The alternative was to cancel the event.
