Book Description
This is a text book for the body-centered psychotherapy work called the Hakomi Method. Developed by Ron Kurtz, Hakomi work is a synthesis of philosophies, techniques and approaches with its own unique artistry. Some of its origins stem from Eastern philosophic concepts of gentleness, compassion, mindfulness and going with the grain as well as general systems theory, which incorporates the idea of respect for the wisdom of each individual as a living organic system that spontaneously organizes matter and energy and selects from the environment what it need to maintain its goals, programs and identity.

A must-read for anyone interested in the body-centered movement in psychotherapy. It is written with clarity, humor, and simplicity. Sure to inspire and give insight to both therapists and laypersons.

From the Back Cover
Hakomi is a Hopi Indian word which means "How do you stand in relation to these many realms?" A more modern translation is, "Who are you"., Hakomi was developed by Ron Kurtz, co-author of The Body Reveals. Some of the origins of Hakomi stem from Buddhism and Taoism, especially concepts like gentleness, compassion, mindfulness and going with the grain. Other influences come from general systems theory, which incorporates the idea of respect for the wisdom of each individual as a living organic system that spontaneously organizes matter and energy and selects from the environment what it needs in a way that maintains its goals, programs and identity. Hakomi also draws from modern body-centered psychotherapies such as Reichian work, bioenergetics, Gestalt, Psychomotor, Feldenkrais, Structural Bodywork, Ericksonian Hypnosis, Focusing and Neurolinguistic Programming. Hakomi is really a synthesis of philosophies, techniques and approaches that has its own unique artistry, form and organic process.

The Hakomi Method, created by Ron Kurtz, is a beautifully constructed experiential therapeutic process which incorporates the best of the last 100 or so years of psychotherapeutic study. It integrates Taoist and Buddhist Principles with Western Theory and the Body-Centered Wisdom of Alexander Lowen, John Pierrakos, Hector Prestera and others. I've been a therapist for over 16 years and the Hakomi Method has now become the main influence in my work. Ron's five principles: Mindfulness, Non-violence,Organicity, Unity and Mind-Body Wholism, insure not only change in a person's behavioral patterns, but in their soul as well. It is creative, effective and heartfelt. It is a pleasure to practice therapy this way. I highly recommend this book for anyone in the healing professions.

Reader Comment
A book for all counselors in training, January 7, 2000
Reviewer: Claire from St. Petersburg, Florida USA
In using this book as an extra reading for a Counseling Strategies class, I found that the authors brought to life client-centered and gestalt philosophy and techniques. In addition, a number of students decided to seek counseling themselves to experience the process of unfolding and self-discovery. The best part of this book is the emphasis on the power and courage of the individual client and on the catalyzing and compassionate role of the therapist who guides the individual toward trusting his or her own process as he or she moves toward greater wholeness and healing.
