The Wren

(An Dreoilín)

We heard a wren singing by the river this week. For such a tiny bird it has a very loud song ending with a trill. The wren is known as the king of the birds. The story of how it got this name is very interesting. The wren is the second smallest bird in Ireland. The goldcrest is the smallest. It creeps through hedges in search of insects. It is usually seen with its tail cocked in the air. Its plumage is mainly dark brown. On the day after Christmas day we celebrate the wren's day.
