News and Sports

23rd March 2003

St. Patrick's Day in Cloonfad witnessed an event rarely seen in the village.  The annual parade excelled all expectations not alone by the virtual participation of all the people involved in the parade itself but the efforts of the organisers and the spectators.  Weather is a subject we Irish have always had close to our hearts.  We speak about it as though it was an intimate part of our lives and when we run short of things to say we revert to the very same subject.  No exception here.  What a most beautiful day we had for the parade, not alone was it so glorious but it was more appreciated by virtue of its infrequency.  Not since 1986 have we endured such a good day.  Even to make more of it, it was only one of the past twelve days in March, which we are still amazed at seeing.

In the parade itself there were in excess of thirty floats of various colours and designs.  Some of those involved had obviously taken quite a lot of time to prepare for this day.  To dress up in such style also took some courage and each one was greeted by appreciation when it passed.

The winners of prizes were: in first place the Special Olympics, second place the National School in Cloonfad and in third place was Pat Kearney.  Indeed there were all winners but some had to be selected for prized.  Some of the memories are included below and others will be included in weeks to come.  The community offers congratulations to all concerned and especially the hard working committed to worked so diligently throughout the year to make the parade as colourfull and successful as it was.

PRAYER MEETING
