Three
years ago Pat had the idea of making a play about a traveller's wedding.
He had in mind to it A Coat of Paint but settled on A
Wedding in the Making. The
reference to the colour was the colour of the horse and the
difference the paint made to it. I
converted the cottage at the back of my own house says Pat, in order to
facilitate the making of the play. I
own a horse and carriage, a barrel top, the traditional mode of transport
of the travellers in olden times. Tomas
Burke was called in to direct and Gerry Geraghty was behind the camera.
Part
proceeds were handed over to Mentally Handicapped Kiltullagh Branch.
This was my intention from the begining
The
tale itself concerns the wedding of the traveller’s daughters. The
unaccepted status of the two girls, by the prospective grooms' mother by
being of the travelling tradition was painfully obvious.
The story goes how the two bachelors were duked into believing the
two maidens were of a different and higher social status. The play
ends with a question as to whether they married of not.
This leaves open the opportunity for a further development of the
storyline in the next edition.
The play comes in dvd or video at a cost of €20 or
€15 and is available in all of the local shops. Should anyone wish
to have a copy from outside the area they should email Pat at pkmj2000@yahoo.co.uk
or mail him at Cloonfad, Co. Roscommon., or ring Pat at 094 9646248.
