Baile is the commonest element in so many Irish placenames that it is well known.
It is represented in English as Bally ...
Expressing the various uses of the concept "home" is not easy however.
It is a help to think of baile as homestead. Learn the phrases below.
Note that abhaile is probably an abbreviation of chun an bhaile to the homestead.
