Cad fút féin? - - What about you yourself?

fút is a prepositional pronoun made up of the preposition
faoi
-- about (or under) and the pronoun tú - - you.
These prepositional pronouns, forainmneacha réamhfhoclacha,
are a distinctive feature of Irish and must be learnt well.
Many idioms depend on them.

We have already met two of these: dom - - to me, agat - - at you / you have ,
and now fút - - about you. This table gives you the forms for the other persons.

dom to me / for me agam at me / I have fúm about or under me
duit to you / for you agat at you / You have fút about you
to / for him aige at him / He has faoi about him
di to / for her aici at her / She has fúithi about her
dúinn to / for us againn at us / We have fúinn about us
daoibh to / for you (pl) agaibh at you (pl) / You have fúibh about you (pl)
dóibh to / for them acu at them / They have fúthu about them

Some examples of fúm in use:

  • Cé faoi a bhfuil sibh ag caint? - - About whom are you talking? Who are you (pl) talking about?

  • Ná bí ag caint fúm! - - Do not be talking about me.

  • Fág fúthu é - - leave it to them (to do).

  • Tá fúm alán eile a scríobh anseo - - I intend to write a lot more here.
