Dúirt mé léi - - I told her that I was thinking of her

Dúirt is past tense of abair - - say. It is irregular in more ways than one. The initial consonant is never lenited ( ~ never aspirated; ~ never takes a "h")

Note the prepositional pronoun following Dúirt + le . . . For a discussion of this point click here.

go raibh mé - - that I was is reported speech, claoninsint,
for bhí mé - - I was. I'll get around to claoninsint eventually.

Ag smaoineamh - - thinking is the verbal noun of the verb smaoinigh - - think and is followed by the prepositional pronoun ar - - on. So ag smaoineamh uirthi - - thinking on her i.e. thinking of her. Here are the other forms for "uirthi - - of her"

ag smaoineamh ar Aingeal thinking of Angela
ag smaoineamh ar an obair thinking of the work
ag smaoineamh orm thinking of me
ort of you
air of him
uirthi of her
orainn of us
oraibh of you (pl)
orthu of them

These prepositional pronouns will be dealt with later. Ar and orm, ort, etc were dealt with before. Click here to revise.
