Cén chaoi a raibh an tseachtain agat - - How was the week you had? (How was your week?)
Go hiontach. Conas a bhí agat féin? - - Wonderful. How was yours?

Here you see one question word conas (how) take the independent form of the verb conas a bhí . . . and the other cén chaoi (what way, how) take the dependent form cén chaoi a raibh . . . From these examples we can make up questions with the other verbs which have the two forms (or other irregularities) in the past tense. they are fuair, faca, deachaigh, dearna, dúirt, and raibh (dependent forms) or fuair, chonaic, chuaigh, rinne, dúirt, and bhí (independent forms)
How did you find it? Conas a fuair tú é?
Cén chaoi a bhfuair tú é?
How did you see it? Conas a chonaic tú é?
Cén chaoi a bhfaca tú é?
How did you go there? Conas a chuaigh tú ann?
Cén chaoi a ndeachaigh tú ann?
How did you do it? Conas a rinne tú é?
Cén chaoi a ndearna tú é?
How did you say it? Conas a dúirt tú é?
Cén chaoi a ndúirt tú é?
How were you? Conas a bhí tú?
Cén chaoi a raibh tú?

Do not be daunted by these different constructions and forms. That is all there is! Learn these and the other tenses will be easy. For accuracy you should try to get them right. They are important. The "a" which appears after conas and cén chaoi is the relative pronoun which I will deal with later. For the moment just learn the questions.
