NATIONAL SCHOOL Butterflies Their website is - http://www.alleghany.k12.nc.us/gcs and our last joint project can be seen on http://www.alleghany.k12.nc.us/gcs/ireland This year they were interested in an environmental awareness theme so we came up with "Butterflies" as both schools are interested in setting up a butterfly garden. For us it will include research and a study of our local butterflies, putting up these web pages to show the children's progress in their study. Here many other subjects will be integrated in the school curriculum using Information Technology - the scanning in of pictures and their display, Art - Drawing replicas and presenting them on the walls, windows and in mobile form, Science - the study of the butterfly at various stages, and of course English and Irish in the all important "verbalisation" of the subject. Parallel to this would be a study of the food and habitat needed for the Butterfly Garden. Next the identification of "Butterfly Friendly" plants and the growing of plants and shrubs necessary to entice them to live with us.
