Organic
Status Achieved
Back again after a wonderful summer holidays!
However the garden and school grounds were neglected for the month of August
and when we came back everything was overgrown with "wildflowers" or weeds
depending on where the were growing and where they were wanted. The Vegetable
garden was overgrown. We had some very good peas, beans, cabbage, onions
and lettuce during the break and now we have a very good crop of Potatoes,
corgettes and our pumpkins are excellent again this year.
On 5th of September had the inspection - We
passed with "flying colours"
We are the First Primary
School in Ireland to achieve Organic Status!
So now we will be able to use the official
symbol on our produce! So now we will have a party!
What is Organic Gardening?
Organic Farming / Gardening is a system
of farming which avoids the use of soluble fertalisers, pesticides, growth
regulators, feed additives and other chemicals. The organic farmer relies
on the use of crop rotations, animal manure, clover, low stocking rates
and good animal husbandry for production outputs. The natural immunity
of plants and animals are used to combat disease wherever possible.
