Title - "Lit by a slanting sun" by Melissa - Getting ready for Tulca - 'S mé ag Samhlaíocht Title - "The Horseman" sent in by Finbarr Title - The Gipsy by Rousseau sent in by Ann This is one of my favourite pictures. I saw it first in the MOMA in New York. I think it's a painting that can reveal different meanings for everybody. For me it shows a person with all that is necessary to survive in life - a pitcher representing sustenance, a stringed instrument representing the arts, a stick representing just the necessary supports - and a coloured robe representing dreams. I like the innocence and vulnerability of the dreamer, who might be male or female, resting on their journey. The lion is life. It can frighten us, and hurt us sometimes, but it is beautiful. I like the yellow eye of the lion looking out at us rather than down at the sleeping figure, as if it challenges us to hide or to be open to what life brings us. I think the picture is a metaphor for Rousseau's own life. He was poor and uneducated, with no training as an artist. His wife died, and eight of his children died. But he continued to believe that he was a great painter. He believed in himself and in who he was, and he dreamt his dreams and remained happy in spite of all his troubles. Some are details of Romanian Traditional Costume, others are beautiful paintings depicting Fairytales ad the rest are the children's creation in their own unique style. They are also part of Galway's Tolca Festival of Visual Art Back to Netdays!
