CARNAUN
NATIONAL SCHOOL
What does ORGANIC mean to us
in Carnaun School?
Garden and Farm Crops: no artificial
chemicals, pesticides or fertilisers when growing crops. Organic produce
is grown within the cycle of nature, not forced with fertilisers.
Rearing Livestock and Poultry:
In the case of livestock and poultry and the production of milk all animals
must be reared on organic land and feed must be 75 -90% organic. Animals
must have access to and be free to roam outdoors. If they are sick they
are treated with homeopathic medicines that are made from organic herbs
and plants.
In the Food Processing Industry
no artificial flavourings, colourings or preservatives can be used.
Why is organic food better for us?
Organic fruit and vegetables are much better for us because they spend
more time absorbing the soil nutrients and therefore they have a higher
content of minerals and vitamins. Fresh food is best and in the case of
fruit and vegetables they begin to lose their goodness from the moment
they are picked. Supermarkets provide great variety in and out of season
as they import from all over the world but unfortunately the produce is
loosing its goodness with every mile travelled.
Fresh local produce is best.
Better Environment: Organic does
not permit artificial chemicals, pesticides or fertilisers therefore there
is less water pollution.
In the Home / School: Remember
that organic means none of these should be used in the house especially
in the kitchen or in the toilet.
We care for the environment in Carnaun National
School!
