Springtime in Carnaun School

On Wednesday the 1st. of February 2006  we celebrated the old festival of Imbolg, the Christian Feast of St. Brigid and the coming of spring by a nature walk and by making the traditional rush crosses.

How St. Bridget got the land for her church!
St. Bridget is the (lady) patron saint of Ireland. (Of course everyone knows that St. Patrick is the (gentleman) patron saint of Ireland.
Bridget wanted some land on which to build her first church but when she went to the local chieftain he was very mean and did not want to give her any. So she asked for just as much as her cloak would cover. Laughing he agreed. “Take off your cloak and spread it on the ground” he said but to his dismay and amazement when she spread it out under a lovely oak tree, the cloak began to grow bigger and bigger. It spread out wider and wider, further and further until it had covered more than enough land on which to build a very big church. The place is still called “Cill Dara” (Kildare) or the “Church of the Oak Tree” and is now also famous as a breeding and racing place for the greatest racehorses in the world.

Stephen points to the first spring flowers in the "Mandegoud" Spring Garden (Called after our friends in the Basisschool, in Mandegoud, The Netherlands). The organic bulbs were imported from the Netherlands last Autumn.
Diarmad coloured some of the birds he saw in the Bird Garden
The Snowdrops compete for the spring light! They flower before the leaves come on the trees and shrubs around them. Mica says "Hurry up and take the photo because it is starting to rain"!
