    Sun care
  • The following simple tips will help you to enjoy your summer sports safely.
  • Try to plan your sporting activities for the early morning or late afternoon. The sun is at its hottest from 11:00am to 3:00pm, so special care is needed at this time.
    Cover-up
  • Wear loose fitting, close weave cotton clothes with collars and sleeves.
  • Wear a hat that shades your head, neck, face and ears. This is particularly important if your hair is thinning.
  • Use sunglasses with a UV filter.

    Sunscreen
  • Use sunscreen on parts that are not covered up - face, neck, shoulders, hands and feet. Choose a sunscreen, providing UVA and UVB protection with SPF1 5 or higher, and re-apply every two hours.
    Remember
  • A tan is a sign that damaged skin is trying to protect itself from the sun's ultra-violet rays. Even when you have a tan you can still get burnt.
  • You can sunburn on cloudy days. One third of the sun's rays can penetrate light cloud cover.
  • Sunburn can occur after as little as twenty minutes exposure to midday sun, even in Ireland.
  • Reflective surfaces such as water, sand and tennis courts can reflect the sun's rays and increase the risk of sunburn.
