Saturday16th September, S.F.L. GLENAMADDY 0-18 vs Tuam Stars 1-9

A convincing second half display led to a good win today. It was a good performance when one considers two points were vital to have any chance of avoiding dropping into 'B' next year.It was a windy day with a strong breeze going up the pitch, we played with the wind in the first half. Shay Walsh gave an exhibition of free taking scoring 5 frees from all angles and distances, he also got one from play, Liam Conneally and Michael Geraghty added points also in the opening half. Tuam had kept in it scoring mostly frees and an opportunistic goal. The scores were level 0-8 to 1-5 at half time. this was scarcely a reflection of the domination glan had in this period. The second half started with some glorious points from Tomas Curtin and Martin Conneally, we were moving the ball quickly and with accuracy, however Tuam stayed within two points till halfway through when we started to ease ahead eventually ending up six points ahead. It was a more authorative display than we have shown for a long time.

We started the second half well with good scores from T.Curtin and Martin Conneally. Our movement and committment was very good, with lots of good runs being made and passes spotted. Tuam stayed with us for about 10 minutes of the half then we started easing ahead, with further scores from Shay,Martin ,T.Curtin, and M.Molloy ,finishing up six points ahead at the whistle. It was a good performance, enhanced by the fact that all our substitutes played well on their introductions. If the same level of performance and commitment is shown against Mountbellew then we are in with a good shout.

The team lined out as follows

Sunday 20th August , S.F.C. GLENAMADDY 0-9 vs Killererin 0-11

A game we could ?should have won. We had plenty of possession of the ball, but errors at crucial times let us down. Killererin were more economical with the ball throughout, supplying P.Joyce with quality possession, something that is hard to contain. The game was played in Athenry, on a great surface , in front of a large crowd.we took the lead through a Shay Walsh free after a few minutes in. We were playing with a sweeper at the back , Tom Giblin who was playing in front of Michael Brogan, this was done in an attempt to limit the amount of ball reaching P.Joyce.We scored further points through Shay (2) and Tom Curtin (1)to leave the score 0-4 to 0-3 in our favour at half time. In truth the backs were on top mostly, with scoring opportunities hard to come by. However we should have been more than a point up, it would have been a more realistic reward for our first half domination.

The second half continued in the same vein, with Killererin going two points up ten minutes in, scores from Shay kept us in it. Aidan Geraghty was unlucky when sending a goal chance wide.It felt like it wasn't going to be our day after that.In fairness the lads battled well throughout , Terence Morgan making a big impact when he came on, scoring one and getting a 14 yard free which Shay dispatched. At the final whistle there were two points in it. The main difference seemed to the economy with which Killererin got their scores, and he speed with which they passed the ball to their forwards. There is no doubting the potential of the team, the backbone of experience allied to the youngsters coming through bodes well. We need all the experienced players to stick together for another few years to let the youngsters get settled in. It was a good effort that just fell short today.

Sunday 2nd July, S.F.C. GLENAMADDY 0-12 vs N.u.i.g. 1-7

A much better performance today, ( at times ), building on last weeks victory. We deservedly won through to the first round proper with this good win over the college team. it was a lovely evening for football, and we played to the scoreboard end in the first half. there was a stiff enough breeze in our favour. Michael Geraghty made his championship debut at corner forward as a result of Seamus Silke being unavailable to start.

NUIG started well and went into a two point lead, shay had uncharacteristically missed two frees, but handed over free-taking duties to Tom Curtin who slotted two over to level it up. Martin Conneally then put us ahead with a well taken score. College levelled, but Shay Walsh put us ahead with a lovely point following a well seen crossfield pass from Michael Geraghty. Roles were reversed soon after when Shay supplied Geraghty for a nice, coolly taken point.Tom Curtin added two more frees and a beauty from play, following a lovely interchange of passes, where he drilled it low over the bar from out on the right. 8 - 4 to Glan at half-time.

Aaron Hynes got us off to a great start in the second with a point following a long run and one - two with Shay Walsh. Tiernan Walsh and Michael Geraghty followed up with two more points to put us 0-11 to 0-4 up. Aaron Hynes was replaced due to a hamstring strain, Damian Potter filling in well at half back. Terence Morgan came on for Liam Conneally, and S.Mannion for Tom Giblin who injured his back.Unfortunately we fell asleep again and lost our shape up front. College came back into it, with three points and then a penalty , they had us pegged back to a one point lead. Gary Keaveney then pulled off a good save to keep us ahead, and Shay Walsh pointed a difficult free from out on the right, to see us home with two points to spare.

When we played well we looked very good and fluid, however we let them back in too easily and instead of finishing them off we were fighting a rearguard action. This is two wins in a row, hopefully we have turned the corner this year. The team lined out as follows.

G.Keaveney, J.Keaveney, M.Brogan, A.Potter, A.Hynes ( 0-1 ) , T,Giblin, L.Giblin, P.Geraghty, A.Geraghty, L.Conneally, T.Walsh ( 0-1 ), T.Curtin ( 0-5, 4f ), M.Conneally ( 0-1 ), S.Walsh ( 0-2 ,1f ), M.Geraghty ( 0-2 ). Subs used: D.Potter, T.Morgan, S.Mannion

Sunday 25th June S.F.L. St. Brendans 0-8 GLENAMADDY 1-11

A welcome return to winning ways today, with a much improved performance. the team showed a lot more bite and determination. The hard work of the last few weeks seems to be starting to pay off .Aidan Geraghty swirched to Midfield With Michael Brogan going to Full Back and Tom Giblin at Centre. We started well with good points from Shay and Tom Curtin. Tiernan scored a fine goal about half way through the first half following good work from Liam Conneally and Shay Walsh. Hard to believe , this was our first goal in league or Championship this year. At half time the lead was 1-6 to 0-4, in fairness we were all over them. The second half was dominated by the sending off of Seamus Silke, for reasons known only to the ref, ( D.Ryder , say no more.) the fact that the linesman was clattering around him appears to have gone unnoticed. A Ballygar player was also dismissed. Glan held out comfortably to the end winning by 6 at the finish. A good morale boost before next week's championship outing. Hopefully Tom Giblin will be in good shape for it.

The team lined out as follows;

G.Keaveney, J.Keaveney, M.Brogan, A.Potter, L.Giblin, T,Giblin, A.Hynes, P.Geraghty (0-1),A.Geraghty, L.Conneally, T.Walsh (1-0), M.Conneally, S.Silke (c), S.Walsh (0-8), T.Curtin (0-1) . Subs used T.Morgan (0-1), M.Geraghty, S.Mannion.

S.F.L GLENAMADDY 0-12 Caltra 4-8

Despite the score this was a game where Glan played well and were in it all the way through. The difference between the two sides was the goal threat of Caltra. Aidan Geraghty played very Well on Michael Meehan yet he scored two goals from two half chances. The fact that we gifted them 2 goals didn't help our cause either.

Monday 1st May S.F.L. Killanin 1-9 GLENAMADDY 0-8

An abject performance today where for the most part it looked as though we lacked interest in the contest, and ended up being deservedly beaten. It mightn't be too far off the mark to suggest some players had a good night out prior to the game. Killanin were the better team, showing good fight and strong running throughout. However it would be hard to exagerate the poorness of the glan performance. Paul Geraghty sustained a neck injury early on which didn't help the cause , with him having to be replaced. Despite our lacklustre showing we were only a point down at half time 0-4 to 0-3. Scorers in the first half were P.Geraghty (45'), M.Conneally and T.Curtin with a free. Glen supporters felt it might only be a matter of time before we started to play , however things did not improve. Killanin were playing smarter and snuffed out our attacks early, defending from 1 to 15. Frustration set in as time and again they poured back en masse to stop ball reaching our full line. In spite of all this we were still in the game till the last quarter following two points from Tom Curtin and Shay, which brought us within 2 points. They goaled putting them 5 points up. Two points from Shay Walsh and one from Terence Morgan kept interest alive if not hope. Killanin ran out 1-9 to 0-8 winners in the end. The team lined out as follows:

G.Keaveney, J.Keaveney, A.Geraghty, A.Potter, S.Silke (c), M.Brogan,T.Giblin, P.Geraghty 0-1, S.Mannion, T.Walsh, , M.Conneally 0-1, M.Molloy, L.Conneally, S.Walsh 0-3 ,T.Curtin 0-2.

subs used, T.Morgan 0-1, D.Potter, G.Hussey, S.Joyce, A.Hynes.

Saturday 29th April S.F.L. Salthill 1-13 GLENAMADDY 0-14

This was a much better showing following our weak outing against Killererin. Shane Mannion started in Midfield alongside Paul Geraghty. Seamus Silke reverting to wing back. The game was played in beautiful conditions on the Cappagh rd. complex on the Barna side of Salthill. the pitch was sandy enough, and a lot of players took some time to adjust to the conditions. It turned out to be an exciting game toing and froing from start to finish, with a lot of excellent scores taken on both sides. Glan started well with a lovely point from Martin Conneally. We followed this with good scores from T.Curtin, Shay Walsh and a nice point from play from Paul Geraghty. Salthill playing down a not insubstantial hill kept plugging away at us and got a goal to put them 3 points up heading to half time, however from the kickout we went up and scored a point from Tom Curtin, and went in only two down at the break. We took some control early in the second half with points from Shay, Michael Brogan and Martin Conneally.Terence Morgan also pointed on his introduction. We were two points up heading into the last five minutes. Salthill kept going and got back level, just when a draw looked most likely Salthill gave a free away ( unluckily ) 50 yards out and for backchat got it moved up putting it inti kickable range. Shay obliged and we we were a point up. One last kickout heralded the final whistle. A good win , overall a better performance, but still a lot of silly mistakes, handling errors and misplaced passes.

However any day you beat the All Ireland Champions is a good day.

The Team lined out as follows

G.Keaveney, J.Keaveney, A.Geraghty, A.Potter, T.Giblin, M.Brogan 0-1, S.Silke, P.Geraghty 0-1 , S.Mannion

T.Walsh, M.Conneally 0-1, M.Molloy, L.Conneally, S.Walsh 0-7, T.Curtin 0-2. Subs used, A.Hynes, T.Morgan 0-1

SUN 18th Sept. S.F.C. Semi Final GLENAMADDY 1-7 Carna-Cashel 1-8.

This was a day of disappointment for us as we fell at the penultimate stage of the competition. Unfortunately our failing in front of the posts returned to haunt us today. We kicked a total of 16 wides over the hour. The absence of Shay Walsh due to surgery, allied to the early loss of Liam Conneally, didn't help matters. Tom Giblin was clearly feeling sore also, and his inability to continue in the second half was yet another blow. For all these events we still had more than enough opportunities to win this game by a substantial score.
We played with the wind towards the town goal in the first half, Tiernan Walsh scored early with a fisted point. We didn't follow up on this, missing a number of frees and scoreable kicks. Tomas Curtin replaced the injured Liam Conneally after 15 minutes and kicked two frees. Carna had us under a lot of pressure , our backs defending well, however they will feel they should have scored at least one goal in the first half, they led instead 0-4 to 0-3 at the interval. Carna scored first in the second half,Tom Curtin pointed a free, carna scored two more points to go three up. The lads staged a comeback of sorts and showed some fight. Martin Conneally scored two frees, before Carna added a point and goaled to go five up. The lads dug in and got back into it when Michael Purcell found the net after good work from Damian Potter. Tiernan Walsh added a point with 3 minutes to go, but it was to be our last score. We had 40 odd frees during the game and Carna proved to be a rugged, fit, determined outfit. Credit the lads for trying especially when everything was going so badly for them , they kept going. The subs who came in did well and showed the importance of having a panel. We only hope the lads pull themselves up for the Kilkerrin game. If they can improve shooting ratio next time out , a top two place in the league is still a target.
The team lined out as follows

FRI Aug 19th S.F.L. GLENAMADDY 0-9 Mountbellew- Moylough 0-7

A very good result from an unusual game, we were missing a few regulars, and had a few starting who were feeling niggles the previous match.I'm sure Mountbellew were delighted to see Shay Walsh, Paul Geraghty and Michael Brogan not starting. John Keaveney came in at corner back, Tom Giblin moved to full-back, Seamus Silke started at centreback. Tiernan Walsh and Aidan Geraghty manned Midfield. Michael Purcell and Damian Potter came in at wing forward. Thus a much altered layout, but a great opportunity for the lads who came in to stake a claim for inclusion. We started nervously with the players adjusting to new positions, Mountbellew must have felt we were going to be easy pickings, they missed a few scoring opportunities before pointing to take the lead. We lost Tom Giblin after 10 minutes with a recurrence of his back injury, Daryl Fahy came on at corner back with John Keaveney switching to Fullback. it was a game littered with mistakes, however the glan lads began to believe they could win it and started producing good football at times. We went in 5-4 up at half-time. We played towards the Creggs road in the second half and soon strectched into a three point lead, Mountbellew kept going and pegged us back to 1 before we eventually ended the game two points up.It was a satisfying result from an indifferent performance. The lads brought in equipped themselves well, and can be pleased with their contibutions.
The team lined out as follows

SAT 14TH August, S.F.C Q/FINAL... GLENAMADDY 0-10 Killanin 0-7

A marvellous result today, what a feeling, hard to believe it, but we're in the last four. Do we deserve to be? Absolutely, we could have won this one by a lot more. This was an improved championship performance, which was in my opinion still below the levels of performance shown in the league.(which is great, we are in in the semis without reaching our potential). It was a nice evening with a small breeze favouring us in the first half as we played into the scoreboard end. We started brightly playing good open football, playing a lot of quick ball into Shay Walsh who was operating at 14, Shay had a great start to the game kicking three fine points in the first ten minutes, before coming off with a calf muscle tear after 1/4 of an hour. This forced some changes with Martin Conneally moving to full forward, Liam Conneally into the corner, and Enda Burke coming on in the half forward line. Tiernan was operating as a third midfielder at their kickout and fielded three great high balls, this was negating the impact of Walsh and Fahy at Midfield for Killanin, indeed the Geraghtys were well on top in this sector. The game was a tit for tat affair with Killanin always chasing us, Aidan Geraghty put us 4-3 up with a well taken point, following a good passing move which culminated in a marvellous crossfield pass from Martin Conneally putting Aidan away clear for the score. They levelled only for Martin C to again put us a point up at the break 5-4, Tiernan was unlucky not to bag a goal with his effort hitting the side netting after another good move, just before the break. Going in a point up was the least we deserved, I counted 11 wides in the half, however at no stage did it look like a repeat of Mountbellew, we were playing better than that. There was no sense of panic from the players, they dug in and kept going, the experience gained from the previous rounds standing to them. The second half commenced with a flurry of scores from Martin Conneally to bring us four points up.Killanin then enjoyed a period of dominance for about 10 minutes but could only peg back 2 points, before we re-asserted ourselves on the game. Liam Conneally forced a great save,Gary Keaveney pulled off two fine saves at this stage to keep us ahead. Michael Molloy pointed to restore our 3point cushion , only for the opposition to again bring it back to two following a free. Martin Conneally finished the scoring for the day with a well taken 35 metre free to give us a 3point lead at the whistle. Overall a better performance, confidence would appear to be growing. Fitness is good, allied to a growing physical presence. While confining Killanin to 7 points I didn't feel it was our backs most comfortable day, however at this stage of the championship nothing is easy. Midfield was dominant for long spells, as were the forwards, who could have added a few more, but these are minor details on a day when the result was more important.Indeed it is a sign of of how much improved we are and the level of expectation that this has brought about, that we can say the lads can play better.Another step up in the performance level in the Semi-Final would give us a great shout.
The team lined out as follows
G.Keaveney, S.Silke(c), M.Brogan, A.Potter, A.Hynes, T.Giblin, L.Giblin, A.Geraghty (0-1), P.Geraghty, L.Conneally, C.Ryan, T.Walsh, M.Molloy (0-1), S.Walsh (0-3), M.Conneally (0-5). SUBS USED, E.Burke, T.Morgan, J.Keaveney.

Friday 23rd July S.F.L. Annaghdown 1-7, GLENAMADDY 0-10.

A hard fought draw tonight, which looked unlikely for a long time. We played with none of the fluency shown recently, and indeed mistakes in handling were numerous. It was a heavy , clammy evening and an 8 o clock throwin didnt do much for visibility. The lads started sluggishly I felt and seemed dead on their feet.Indeed we were lucky at the break to be still in the game, its not that we were playing terrribly, just that things weren't going as well as usual, misplaced passes, dropped balls etc. Annaghdown got a goal after 20 or so minutes and within 2minutes were awarded a penalty, which was luckily for us the poorest attempt seen at scoring in a long time. The score at the break was 1-5 to 0-3, our scores coming from Martin and Liam Conneally 1apiece and Tiernan Walsh. The second half saw a much needed improvement, and a spirited fightback. Shay Walsh was brought on for the last 20 minutes, Terence Morgan came on for 15 minutes , replacing the injured A.Geraghty. We dispayed more grit in this half and brought scores level with 5 minutes to go. An outrageous refereeing decision given against Butty gave them a point scoring opportunity, which they took. The referee realizing his mistake levelled matters giving us a soft free to equalise, which Shay converted, leaving the score at the finish 1-7 to 0-10. Shay scored 4 points after coming on, Cathal Ryan put over 2, and Tom Giblin scored a fine point after a trademark burst upfield. We had opportunities to win the game , but so had they , a draw ended up a reasonably fair result, we'd have taken it at half-time.The team lined out as follows,
G.Keaveney, S.Silke(c), M.Brogan, A.Potter, A.Hynes, T.Giblin (0-1), L.Giblin, P.Geraghty, A.Geraghty, T.Walsh (0-1), M.Conneally (0-1), E.Burke, M.Molloy, C.Ryan (0-2), L.Conneally (0-1) Subs used, S.Walsh (0-4), T.Morgan.

Sat 16th July, Tuam Stadium, S.F.C. GLENAMADDY 1-8, Michael Breathnachs 0-9.

A great result following a middling performance today. This win puts us in the last eight of the Championship for the first time ever, and indicates again the progress being made.We made hard work of it however, and Breathnachs proved resilient, tough opposition. We got off to a great start with Tiernan Walsh doubling on the ball to the net in the second minute. We followed this with six points in the half, P.Geraghty (0-1, 45' ),M.Conneally, L.Conneally (0-1 each), S.Walsh (0-3, 1free ).The half time score was 1-6 to 0-05. We only scored two pointed frees from Shay in the second half, their Goalie, however produced two fantastic saves to prevent certain goals from Shay and Martin Conneally. The opposition kept at us til the end, and in fairness missed a number of chances that could have brought it level.
When the final whistle blew, it was a mixture of relief and elation that was felt. The direct ball into our full forward line worked well, but we slowed things up too often. A win is a win, and we can look forward to the next round, fearing no-one , and with absolutely nothing to lose.
The team lined out as follows,

G.Keaveney, S.Silke(c),M.Brogan, A.Potter,A.Hynes, T.Giblin, L.Giblin, P.Geraghty (0-1, 45'), A.Geraghty, T.Walsh (1-0),M.Conneally (0-1),E.Burke, C.Ryan, S.Walsh (0-5, 3frees ), L.Conneally (0-1). Subs used : M.Molloy, T.Morgan, M.Purcell.

S.F.C. GLENAMADDY 0-13, KILKERRIN/CLONBERNE 0-10 (After Extra Time.)

We ground out a win today against our neighbours in a toughly contested match in Tuam. The same personnel as played against Cortoon in the league lined out, one positional change being the switch of Cathal Ryan to right corner forward , Liam Conneally moving out to the wing. As we expected it was for a long time a dour and physical match, no quarter asked or given. There was a strong wind blowing towards the dressing room goals , and for the first half we played with the wind.We started off well enough and went into an early two point lead courtesy of scores from Aidan Geraghty and Shay Walsh. Our opponents were playing better than us though and soon went in to the lead. Shay added another fisted point for us, but half-time beckoned with the score 0-6 to 0-3. As in the first round, we kicked a fair few poor wides, but the wind was strong and awkward for shooting today. We were also unlucky not to score a goal with the post denying M.Conneally. The second half showed a big improvement from Glan, as we took control around the field. Aidan Geraghty set up Tiarnan Walsh for a good point early in the half to get us moving. We lost Shay to injury , ( dead leg ) early on, Terence Morgan came on to replace him.Tom Giblin scored following a great run and Cathal Ryan pointed a free to level it up at 0-7 apiece. Aidan Geraghty pointed after a good move to put us up by 1 heading to the whistle. K/C didn't lie down and came back to level it at the whistle. Extra time beckoned.I felt that we would be fitter than K/C and we were, htey looked shot in extra time, but to their credit kept going, however we were well on top at this stage, M.Conneally with two and P.Geraghty with a 70 yard free had us three up, our opponents cut it back to two points twice, on both occassions we went up and scored through Liam Conneally and A.Geraghty to maintain our advantage. At the final whistle it was a three point gap, and was deserved. The lads who came on did well, settling for simple football and hard work.No-one could fault the work rate or fitness, this was allied to toughness, which was needed on the day. So a good win after a nervy start. If we scored even half our wides we could go very well this year.

Saturday 4th of June

Sweeney Oil League vs Tuam Stars - in Tuam Stadium .An understrength senior team was beaten by Tuam this evening on a scoreline of 3-11 to 0-9

Sunday 29th May S.F.L. GLENAMADDY 2-18 CORTOON 1-4.

A return to winning ways today, a fine overall performance capped by a scorching second half display, when we scored 2-13. The question we were asking was what Glan team would turn up on Sunday? would the loss the week before have a negative effect on morale? It is early in the League campaign, but this was a game we needed to win badly, both for points and a confidence boost. The side showed some changes from last week, with Aaron Hynes coming in at wingback, Tom Giblin reverting to centreback, Aidan Geraghty partnering his brother in midfield and Cathal Ryan starting at wingforward. Tiernan Walsh moved to the halfforward line. We started brightly winning the lions share of possession and for the most part using it well, we were soon 4 points up, Cortoon not registering a score till the 22nd minute. However despite the possession we were wasteful at times , overcarrying, rushing frees, and overelaborating. We went in 0-5 to 0-3 ahead at half time, Gary Keaveney pulling off a great save near the end of the half ,ensuring we stayed ahead. The second half was a different proposition altogether, we soon tacked on 3 points to go 0-8 to 0-3 up. Cortoon in fairness scored a good goal to come back within 2 points. That was the nearest they got however as Glan took over completely, the Cortoon midfield ran out of steam and the Geraghtys cleaned up. The backs were working hard to snuff out any threats and kept doing it even after the game was long over for Cortoon. The 6 forwards worked very well together, they defended well and kicked points for fun in the second half, all 6 scored along with our two midfielders and centre back, which is a good sign.Superior fitness played a big part as the lads were still running powerfully at the final whistle.I can honestly say that nobody had a bad game, most had excellent ones. The changes from last week worked well. The team also displayed a ruthless streak we seldom see with them, they finished off Cortoon and showed no let up ,- long may that attitude continue. the team lined out as follows
G.Keaveney, S.Silke(c), M.Brogan, A.Potter, A.Hynes, T.Giblin (0-2), L.Giblin, A.Geraghty (0-1), P.Geraghty (0-2),C.Ryan (1-1), S.Walsh (0-5), T.Walsh (1-1), L.Conneally (0-3), M.Conneally (0-2), M.Molloy (0-1) No subs used.

22/05/05 Tuam Stadium; S.F.C. GLENAMADDY 0-7 MOUNTBELLEW/MOYLOUGH 1-5

A case of should have, could have today , when we kicked away a great opportunity to win this first round match. We lost the toss and had to play into a strong breeze in the first half , towards the scoreboard end. We started slowly and Mountbellew got 2 points on the board before Martin Conneally scored a point for us after 1/4 of an hour.We were playing nice football at this stage but finding scores hard to come by. Mountbellew got a goal through Joe Bergin after 20 or so minutes and we looked in trouble, indeed we were 1-4 to 0-1 down coming into the last few minutes of the half. Martin Conneally with two points and one from Michael Molloy had us right back into it at the whistle. The low scoring continued in the second half Mountbellew scoring only 1 point , us not much better with three, two from Shay Walsh and one from Cathal Ryan.We chased the game hard and the lads tried their best but we never levelled it . The real story of the second half , however ,was the poor shooting we displayed, we kicked a lot of wides. If the truth be told we also didn't have much luck , with Martin Conneally and Seamus Silke both being unlucky not to score goals. The good news is we played pretty well at the back, Michael Brogan doing a good job on J.Bergin. We won Midfield and had the lions share of possession especially in the second half, just our shooting on the day let us down. One would hope that on our next outing we wont squander so many chances, because the performance was good bar this.
