The benefits of partitioning a hard drive.
Most PC's come with on fixed hard drive (e.g.
C:Drive), nowadays hard drives can be from 10 to 80gig in size.
So saving all information to your C:Drive is like putting all your
eggs in one basket.
For example: That you have a 20 gig hard drive with one partition
C:, you will then be saving all data in the same drive as your Operating
System and your Programs. But if you partitioned the drive into
two partitions C: & D:, you could then use C: for your OS &
Programs and use D: for your data. This way if you ever need to
reformat and reinstall or update your OS, your data would be left
untouched in partition D: A 5gig partition would be ideal for C:
and the rest of the drive space for D:, this will also make running
Scan Disk and Disk Defragmenter much easier.
Another advantage of having a two partition drive is that you can
make a full backup of your OS & Programs to and image file in
D: drive, with programs such as ghost etc. Then if something goes
wrong with your OS you just have to ghost back your image file and
you are up and running again.
