Welcome to the Combat Mission Map Case. This site offers two types of map for download: recreations of historical battlefields and fictitious maps for use in the creation of Combat Mission scenarios. This is a new site, and is still something of a work-in-progress, so there may be some more changes before the layout is finalised. The Combat Mission Map Case is affiliated with SuperTed's's Forward Observer site, and news of any updates will be posted there, along with news from numerous other Combat Mission fansites. The maps are my own creations, except where noted. They may be freely used, adjusted or redistributed. All I ask is that I be clearly credited as the original designer. Where a map has been designed by someone else, please seek the original designer's permission before using it. Thanks. |
| The Historical Maps
currently available cover mainly the Napoleonic Wars, but
the intention is to include battlefields from many different periods.
These maps could possibly be used as the basis for scenarios, but their
primary purpose is to use Combat Mission's 3D map engine as a means of
"visiting" some of the great battlefields of the past; a sort
of virtual battlefield tour, if you like. A note on map design: While the historical maps are as accurate as I can make them in terms of details and proportions, some adjustments to scale have been necessary in order to fit in with the capabilites of the Combat Mission map editor, and so that exploring the map does not become too tiresome in the case of some of the larger battlefields. For example, I may have reduced distances by a certain proportion (uniform for each battle but varying between battles) in order to make the battleground fit the editor. Where this has been done, some minor alterations may be necessary in order to keep the right battlefield "look"; for example, a village may be represented as a farm or hamlet in order to avoid cluttering the map where distances between villages have been reduced. My priority is to ensure that each map is as true to the essence of the real location as possible, to the extent that one could use such a map to follow a written account of a battle, and arrive at a deeper understanding of the event and of the ground over which it was fought, whether it be from a bird's or worm's eye view. I hope you find that I have succeeded. If not, please let me know. By the way, if you have created a historical map and would like it to be included in this site, please drop me a line. The more, the merrier. |
| The Fictitious Maps: These are maps of various types and sizes that are designed be used as the basis of Combat Mission scenarios. My intention here is to provide maps that have a more realistic look and greater variety than those normally produced by the random map generator. Unlike the historical maps, these maps have been designed with game play in mind. As with the historical maps, feedback is greatly appreciated. |
| Request a Map: This is an experimental service to scenario designers to see if (a) anyone is interested in having maps made to order and (b) if I can do it to their satisfacton. See the relevant page for full details. |
