Home Physics Chemistry Exam Papers Experiments Carbon Dioxide

Carbon dioxide is compound of carbon and oxygen.

Def: Test for carbon dioxide: carbon dioxide turns limewater milky when bubbled through it.

Def: A fuel is any substance used to produce heat from a chemical or nuclear reaction.

Photosynthesis uses solar energy to turn carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates in plants. These plants can then be burned as fuel.
Turf, coal, oil and gas are all made by the accumulation of decayed animals.
Turf is the youngest fuel.
All these fuels are hydrocarbons: compounds of hydrogen and carbon.
There is much more coal in the world then oil and gas.
Fossil fuels are hydrocarbons (compounds of hydrogen and carbon)
Fossil fuels are non-renewable.
CO2 dissolves in rainwater to make a weak carbonic acid.
Sulphur dioxide dissolves in rainwater to make a strong acid.
Acid rain damages vegetation, dissolves stone in buildings and injures your lungs.
H2O + CO2= H2CO3
H2O + SO2= H2SO3
Coal is a major cause of acid rain because it isn’t treated to remove sulphur compounds.
Acid rain destroys plant and animal life in rivers and streams.
THREE CONDITIONS are necessary in order to light a fire: FUEL, HEAT and OXYGEN.

1. A Water\Carbon Dioxide extinguisher has a lot of water in it and a pressurised CO2 canister, when breaks open pushes the water out with great pressure. This cools and smothers the fire.
2.  A Carbon Dioxide extinguisher is full of CO2 gas, which smothers the fire.
3.  A foam extinguisher has a foam substance in it and CO2 gas, which blankets and smothers the fire.

Uses of CO2

1. Puts the “fizz” in cola.

2. Dry Ice (-79 degrees) is used for refrigeration and smoke effects

3. Yeast (which is a living organism) gives off CO2 and this makes the bread rise.

4. CO2 is used in fire extinguishers.
