Home Physics Chemistry Exam Papers Experiments Energy

Def: Energy is the ability to do work.

Energy is measured in joules (j)

1 kilojoule = 1000 joules

Def: Potential energy is energy due to position or condition.

Def: Kinetic is energy something has because it is moving.

Forms of Energy

Potential Energy: e.g. Water behind Dam

Chemical Energy: e.g. Petrol, Battery & Food

Nuclear Energy: Nuclear Power Station

Kinetic Energy: Moving Car

Heat Energy: Water in Kettle

Electrical Energy: Supplied by ESB

Light Energy: e.g. Bulb

Sound Energy: e.g. Radio

Magnetic Energy: e.g. Magnet

All our energy comes in the first place from the sun.

Law of conservation of energy: Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only change from one form to another.

Crookes radiometer converts light energy to kinetic energy.

A Bell converts electrical energy to sound energy.

Chemical, Nuclear and Potential energy are all examples of stored energy.
