Def: A magnet is something that attracts pieces of iron to it.

·        A magnet contracts iron (Fe), Nickel (Ni), Cobalt (Co) and steel.

·        Hang a magnet from a non-metal stand and wait for it to stop swinging. It will stop with one end pointing north mark this as N.

·        When a magnet is free to swing it settles in a north-south direction.

·        Like magnetic poles repel. Unlike magnetic poles attract.

Def: The space within which a magnet has effect is called a magnetic field.

Def: A magnetic field line is the path along which a north pole would move if it were free to do so.

·        Solenoid = Long coil of wire

·        Iron, Nickel, Cobalt and some of their alloys can be magnetised.

·        Use keepers to keep magnets preserved.

·        Magnets are used as catches on cupboard doors.

·        Electromagnets are used in scrap yards.
