We regret to announce the death of Mr. John Cooney, a well-known citizen of Waterford who died on Saturday at his residence 130, Parade Quay, Waterford after a few hours illness.
He was a native of Wexford and came of a family which for centuries resided at Camblin, near New Ross. Mr. Cooney came to live in Waterford more than half a century ago when he joined the services of the Neptune (Iron Works) Foundry in whose employment and in that of their successors the Waterford Steamship Company, he remained up to the time of his death as one of their principal engineers. He was a lifelong teetotaller, a man of most exemplary character and his passing is regretted by a large circle of friends. His father, the late Mr. James Cooney was one of the first Poor Law Guardians of New Ross Union. His uncle Patrick Cooney was one of the leaders of the 1798 insurrection and in past years, many of the old residents of New Ross could point out the place where he and many of his kin laid down their lives for Ireland on June 5th 1798.
