Session with Vincent Broderick

Members of Kilnadeema Comhaltas met recently with the legendary musician and composer Vincent Broderick and a great evening of music, song, dance and stories followed. The branch members were guests in the home of Vincent's nephew Gerard and his wife Kathleen and son Jason. Also in attendance were his wife, brother, sister, nephews, nieces and friends. Vincent was in great form and joined in with the session tunes. He also played duets with the man of the house Gerard, niece Kathleen Raftery and grandniece Tara from Dublin. The branch members played a number of Vincent's compositions. The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the stories told by Vincent about what inspired him to compose the tunes. He offered great advice and encouragement to the young musicians present and spoke of his young days travelling, with his brother Peter, to the house dances and sessions. The evening also included a Galway set, some solos and a few songs. Branch chairperson Mary Forde, made a presentation to Vincent to honour his contribution to Irish music and his recent TG4 award. Refreshments were served and the night finished with a few tunes from Gerard Broderick on the bagpipes. The branch would like to thank the Broderick family for their hospitality and friendship. We look forward to the upcoming release of a new book of Vincent's compositions.
