[S92] Juliet Dunning Vincent 18
Juliet Dunning Vincent 1836 - 1904I do not
really remember Grandma Vincent (Juliet). I have a vague memory of
being in her kitchen licking cake & frosting crocks. That is all.
One of our neighbors Elizabeth Milland told me that Grandma often
visited us driving her own "rig" & that when she departed I was always
seen hanging on to her phaeton - she would have to stop and insist
that I get off - This may have been because I didn't want her to go on
again mearly that I wanted a little ride. She died in 1904. I was
five years old. Our mother loved her & spoke of her always with great
affection. She had married at sixteen & had two children before
leaving Indiana, Uncle Rud & Hadassah. She had been married almost
four years when the wagon train started West. Hadassah must have been
less than a year old, probably only a few months & nursing. We have
no record of how many wagons there were. We do know they went to
Wisconsin first & found the land too wooded. They headed South West &
bought land in Storey Co Iowa. They built a farm & house, hastily
constructed, the house built into the side of a hill but not actually
a sod house. The huge sturdy barn built to last came 1st of course
and for several years they lived in the tiny house. Our father was
born there 1869. Grandma carried water up a steep hill - the hill was
painted out to me many years later - The boys were needed to work the
farm - Grandmas mother & father B.J. & Charity may have come with them
from Indiana or may have come later. B.J. had a farm - We looked at
his will at the Court House in Nevada. Both grand parents are buried
there. Our mother said Grandma never spoke of her mother. She had so
many sisters & nieces & nephews that were of interest to her - she
must have lived for the present & not dwell on the past. She was much
beloved in Hoisington & had a great many friends. She kept her close
touch with relatives in Iowa and made many visits back there. Grandpa
had a hard time farming - the rugged Northern Iowa winters were
difficult - We found a record of him being lost & half frozen in a
blizzard. This may have been the start of his rheumatism. He sold
the farm, moved to Nevada & started a hotel - grandmother took over
the restaurant. She must have liked it as from then on Juliet had her
restaurant - Gt. Bend for awhile after they moved to Kansas & finally
"the Delmonico" in Hoisington that became quite famous in that region.
She was an excellent cook & "set a generous table." But most of all
she liked doing it - liked making her own money & making a success in
her field.None of us have a picture of grandma - She was short &
always plump - vivacious & affectionate superstitious & high tempered
so I've been told. In other words she must have had personality of
the out going interesting type - She helped when a baby was born,
helped dress a corpse & took food to the poor & the sick - she even
found time to be with our mother when Maurine & I were born. The
light went out of grandpas life when she passed away so she must have
been quite a gal - "One" of the Dunnings from Bridgeport & a credit to
her clan.
