"When Pilate heard these words, he took Jesus outside and sat down on the judges seat in the place called “The Stone Pavement”.  (In the Hebrew the name is Gabbatha.) It was then almost noon of the day before the Passover.  
John 19/13-14a

Pilate thinks he is the judge and sits on the judgement seat! It is jesus who is the real 'Judge' before whom we judge ourselves. If I choose Jesus then I gain eternal life. If I ignore Jesus then I condemn myself.
