Forty Years of Priesthood

On 22nd December 2002 Fr. Herman Nolan C.P. and Fr. Fernando Carberry C.P. celebrated in Mount Argus their forty years of priesthood. They share the day with Fr. Ailbe Delaney C.P. in Prestonpans, Edinburgh and Fr. Julian Black C.P. in Hukuntsi, Botswana.

Both Herman and Fernando did their secondary schooling in Tobar Mhuir, Crossgar. Both had been working - Fernando, who was from Belfast, as a brick-layer and Herman, who was from Dublin, as a salesman. From Crossgar they went to The Graan where they were professed in August 1957. Their studies for the priesthood were done in the Passionist study houses in Dankeith Scotland and Mount Argus Dublin. They were ordained in Dublin on 22nd December 1962.

From now on their paths were to diverge. Fr. Fernando was assigned to Botswana while Fr. Herman spent some years in Scotland.

After a few years in Botswana Fr. Fernando was to return to Ireland and be involved in parish work in Ardoyne Belfast and in Mount Argus Dublin. Presently he is on the parish in Mount Argus.

Fr. Herman. after a time in Scotland, was assigned to Mount Argus where he has spent most of his priesthood. Here he was involved in Church ministry and is a great supporter of the Legion of Mary. To them he has served as chaplain and ministered to them in a variety of ways. He became a great friend of the late Frank Duff, founder of the Legion, and Herman and Frank had many happy times together.

Here are Herman and Fernando cutting the Celebration cake in Mount Argus.
