Fr.
Troy pays tribute to Monk
By Rebecca Black
The
funeral will take place tomorrow of a Passionist monk whose death will
leave Holy Cross monastery a poorer place, Fr Aidan Troy said last night.
Brother Angelo McDonald (77) of the Passionist Community died peacefully
at Belfast City Hospital on Wednesday.
Fr Troy had known Br Angelo for more than 35 years through the order and
described him as "a really refined, lovely man".
Br Angelo was born in Cushendun, Co Antrim, in 1930 and trained and worked
at the former Grand Central Hotel on Belfast's Royal Avenue before joining
the order in 1952.
He lived in the Ardoyne community most of his life but in the past six
years suffered from illness, including heart problems and prostate cancer.
"I first knew him in the early seventies when I was a member of the
community in Crossgar," Fr Troy said.
"I have only been here at Holy Cross about six years but I would
know him from that time when he was a young active man who was very popular
wherever he went." Illness caused him to retire to the Nazareth Nursing
Home on Ravenhill Road four years ago.
However, Fr Troy said: "He never lost his interest in people or his
cheerfulness. "He was just heroic the way he handled the pain and
suffering from his illnesses." Br Angelo's remains will be removed
to Holy Cross Church at 6pm today. Requiem Mass will be celebrated at
11 am tomorrow followed by burial in Holy Cross Cemetery.
