Our "home in the country" is in Ballymacaw, 3 miles from Dunmore East
in County Waterford. Each Summer and most long week-ends between Easter and
Hallowe'en are spent in a tiny cottage which is part of a former Coastguard
Station, with (Liv's) Ma & Da (Tom & Elsie Murray)
in the cottage to one side, and the Laceys in the cottage to the other side.
Patricia and John are the 4th. generation of Liv's family to holiday in the
Coastguard Station, it having begun with her grandparents Dan & Rosie Ryan.
Ballymacaw Cove is a lovely natural harbour, and the local cliffs of old red
sandstone between Ballymacaw and Dunmore East have several beautiful coves.
Favourites are Portamhaide (or Portavodda on some maps), a south-west facing
cove which is (thankfully) inaccessible by road, and Rathmoylan (no
relation!). Another favourite spot is Fitzgerald's Strand near Saleen
(opposite Tramore across the Bay), where we often go en masse to
'picnic', weighed down with portable barbeque, grub for lunch & tea,
deck-chairs, beach gear, video-camera, footballs, all of which have to be
carried from the car through a field, over sand-grass and as far along the
beach as we can manage before collapsing.
And sometimes we take a trip to the
Hook
Peninsula in County Wexford, taking the car ferry
from Passage East
to Ballyhack.

This page is dedicated to the memory of the crew of the Jena Lisa,
which sank off Brownstown Head in February 1996 and whose skipper Peter Nolan
was my cousin, and also to the memory of his brother John Nolan who died
tragically in 1983. My childhood and teenage memories of Ballymacaw include
both cousins, and John often brought some of the 'gang' of cousins on trips
up or down the coast in his boat.
