NEW BEGINNING

Nuacht Chlár is reborn! We intend this to be a monthly publication, providing up-to-date information and guidance for the Community.

Whilst we hope to have regular features, including Football, Gardening, Beauty, Badminton, Video Review, Riding Centres etc., we would also welcome information about special events, Birthdays, Engagements, Lost and Found, Cookery Tips, Items for Sale etc.
It is important that contributors provide their copy in good time for each month's issue. May we suggest contributions to be made available to the Newsletter Sub-committee by the third day of each month. In an ideal world, these contributions would be available on a floppy disk (any format and any word processing package will do), but typed or handwritten copy will be equally welcome.

CLAREGALWAY COMMUNITY ACTION GROUP

Claregalway Community Action Group was formed following a Public Meeting of Residents Representatives, Business Community and Parents, held in Claregalway Community Centre on the l4th September, 1994.

As you are aware this Meeting was called to address a number of major concerns in relation to safety and appearance of the village. Progress has been slow. However, following numerous meetings and representations to the County Council, things are beginning to happen. One of our major concerns was the ongoing flooding of the village during the winter months. This issue is now being addressed with work on the drainage system currently ongoing.

The other major concern is safety in the village and we, on your behalf, have suggested a number of measures to address this issue. We have suggested the erection of traffic lights at the major junction where the N17 intersects with the Montiagh Road and the N18. The Council have not agreed to these proposals as yet. However, they have agreed to put ducting in place to facilitate the provision of lights in the future, as part of the drainage works currently ongoing. Funding has also been obtained from the National Roads Authority for the introduction of a traffic calming system to the village. The Council recently invited tenders for this system and work should commence in early Autumn.

The County Council have also agreed to erect warning signs at Claregalway National School. The safety of Children has been a major concern to Parents and Teachers and hopefully these signs, when erected in the Autumn, will lead to a reduction in traffic speed. You will also note that the road to the Community Centre has recently been resurfaced and this should eliminate the ongoing flooding which has been a problem there for some time.

Our other concern is the appearance and level of maintenance in the village and its surrounding hinterland. An Amenity Group has been established for some time and will be outlining their activities in another section of the Publication. However, we compliment them on their endeavour on the Community's behalf and ask you to continue to support them.

As I outlined in my introduction, progress has been slow and much remains to be done. This is only the beginning of a process which will enhance the appearance of Claregalway and there is no reason why this village should not be as attractive as any of the other Villages which have implemented massive improvements in recent years. The well-being of this area depends on all of us working together.

CAMPAI SAMHRADH

This is the sixth year that the Campai Samhradh have been run in the area. As usual, Campai were held in Lackagh and Carnmore and for the first time ever, in Claregalway. Children came from as far as Mountbellew, Abbeyknockmoy, Galway City and Castlegar as well as the immediate areas of Claregalway, Carnmore, Lackagh and Turloughmore.

The weather blessed the tours to Connemara, County Clare and the swimming pool in Clarinbridge. The camp ended with a concert in Lackagh which was packed with the families and friends of the children who attended the course. The Coiste would like to thank the teachers, helpers, students and parents, Craobh na naicreidh and especially Peadar Mullins and Udarás na Gaeltachta.

CLAREGALWAY AGRICULTURAL SHOW 1996

For the past few months, the Claregalway Agricultural Show Committee have been making preparations and plans for their forthcoming Annual Show. One of the main events, the selection of the Show Queen, has already taken place. The title for 1996 goes to Yvonne Duggan, Lakeview, Claregalway. This will be their sixth show and from all accounts, it is expected to be bigger and more popular than before. It will take place on Sunday, the 18th of August, in Duffy's Claregalway Equestrian Centre, Rockwood, Claregalway. The show committee are once again indebted to the Duffy Family for the use of their grounds for the show.

There will be over 200 classes this year, consisting of Horses, Ponies, Donkeys, Cattle, Sheep, Goats, Dogs, Pets, Home Baking, Crafts, Farm Produce, Photography, Flowers, Art, Jam, Eggs and several classes for children.

Show Grounds open at 9 a.m., and entries are accepted on the day. Admission is very reasonable - £3 per adult with children under 12 free. Students £1.

Several trade stands have already booked spaces for the Show Day. On display also will be a Threshing Machine, which should be very interesting to see at work.

Sponsorship plays a major part in financing all shows and Claregalway Show Committee are deeply grateful to all their Sponsors, who support them every year All contributions are very much appreciated. The committee wish to convey their thanks also to the Exhibitors. Without exhibitors, there would be no show. Many are local, but several travel long distances to exhibit at the show. Then of course, what would be the point of all the exhibits and displays if nobody turned up to view it all - spectators are required to make it all worthwhile, so do come along

Claregalway Show is a day out for all the family. There will be amusements for the children, and lots of competitions throughout the day for all to enjoy. Why not try to come along and support your local show.

If you are interested in joining the Claregalway Agricultural Show Committee, just contact the Chairman, Mr. Paul Fleming, or any committee member. All are welcome.

Schedules and Entry Forms are now available. Tel. 091 798249, 798304 or 798405.

The Show Committee take this opportunity to welcome back "Nuacht Chlár", and to wish every success for the future to those who have taken on the task.

PEIL NA nÓG

COACHING

Coaching sessions and practice matches are held at the Leisure Centre on Sundays, 11 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. Parents and newcomers to the area are welcome to come and join us.

A Foundation Coaching Course (8 hrs.) was held at the Leisure Centre in April. These skills courses are for adults who are supervising juvenile players. As a result we now have in the club qualified coaches registered with Cumann Luthchleas Gael, Pairc an Chrocaigh.

THE CONNACHT FINAL

It was 'full house' on the bus to McHale Park as nearly 50 juvenile players travelled to see Mayo and Galway in the final. Bus transport was also arranged for the big games against Sligo and Leitrim in Tuam Stadium.

MOINUIR

After a good win over Caherlistrane in the championships, Claregalway lost the quarter-final to Annaghdown in Cregg on Wednesday July l7. After being the sharper side in the first half and leading at half-time by 2 points, they were unable to match Annaghdown in the second half.

It was a good effort at the 'A' level and thanks are due to their manager Fergus Madden and P. J. McGovern and to Seán Dunleavy for donating the strip.

FÉ-16

Claregalway have qualified for the league final after an unbeaten run. They play Corofin in the decider. In the championship we went under to Mountbellew after a replay. Both games were well contested and we missed a few chances over the 2 hours of play.

TED WEBB INTER-COUNTY CUP U-16

U-16 teams from Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo, Clare, etc. competed. Galway has 2 teams, County and City. Damien Noonan, Derek Murray, Keith Holland, Liam Hyland and Phillip Ryan were on the city panel.

FÉ-14

With a younger than usual team we had an excellent turnout for the 6 Co. League games. Most of the panel are U-14 again next year.

FÉILE NA nÓG

32 teams took part in the Championship blitz at various venues around the county on the week-end Sat/Sun, May 4-5. Claregalway competed in Group 3 at Caherlistrane and, though not winning, put up spirited displays against Corofin, Caherlistrane and Caltra. Those present saw Claregalway creating a fair share of chances but a few turning points including a penalty miss against Caherlistrane made a big difference in the end. To the panel - "Well Done"

FÉ-13

The City League will be played in the autumn. All 1995 U-12 players are eligible.

FÉ-12

The League starts on Sun. August 25, when we play Killanin in the Leisure Centre at 11 a.m. Games are played on every Sunday morning thereafter against Salthill, Éire Óg, Oranmore, Ml. Breathnach, St. Michaels. Oughterard.

FÉ-10 agus FÉ-8

The big turnout of U-10's and U-8's is a feature of the year and there is a great buzz on the small pitch every Sunday morning.

JACK BOOTHMAN

Uachtarán Cumann Luthchleas Gael visited Claregalway School on May 28 last. He was welcomed by P. Coen, Principal, on behalf of the pupils and teachers and by M. Higgins, Club Chairman.

CLUB CENTRE

The physical fulfilment for years of voluntary effort, fund raising, rounding up support, etc. has culminated with the completion of the new Centre for the Club, dressing rooms, showers, etc. Club Chairman, Mick Higgins has headed up this project and he and his fellow officers deserve full tributes for these new facilities which are now there and which will be there for the coming generation and beyond.

RAHENY G.A.A. CLUB

U-12 hurlers and footballers and adults visited Galway recently and stayed with us overnight. Carnmore Hurling Club and Ronan Walsh arranged a match on Saturday evening at Carnmore. We played a football match at the Leisure Centre on Sunday morning. Special thanks are conveyed to the parents who provided them with accommodation and transport.

FOOTBALL SUMMER CAMP

Over 60 juveniles participated in the A.I.B/Connacht Council summer camp organised by the Co. Galway Coaching and Games Development Committee at the Leisure Centre on July 1-5 last.

DISTINCTIONS

Michael Monaghan, Liscanninaune, whose help and advice we value highly, has been elected to the Connacht Council, G.A.A. He was formerly Secretary, Co. Football Board.

Patrick Stephens played with the Co. Galway minors in the Connacht League and Championships; Galway won out the League by beating Mayo at Clonbur.

Fergal Moore, Paul Francis, Paul Kilgannon helped St. Mary's College win the Connacht Colleges First Years Football championship final against St. Jarlaths at Cregg; Dara O'Malley, A. Kearney were on the St. Jarlath's team.

Ex-Juvenile footballer Brian Holland was on the Galway Vocational Schools hurling team which reached the All-Ireland final against Cork in Limerick; Gary Hurney and Joe Hession were on the panel. L. Hyland, P. Stephens, A. Monaghan, D. Moore won Connacht Colleges Junior football medals with St. Mary's who beat Summerhill, Sligo in the final.

CO.GALWAY SCHOOLS SELECTION

Michael Maguire, Dermot Hession, Gary Dillon, Thomas Moran and Stephen Cunniffe played on the county team in the exhibition games during half-time at the big Connacht Senior Matches in Sligo and Tuam.

CLAREGALWAY N.S.

In a high scoring game of swaying fortunes Claregalway N.S. lost narrowly to Dunmore N.S. in the play-off for the final of Roinn B 15-a-side. The score was 5-8 to 4-8 and the game was played in Barnaderg. Missing some of their leading players, Claregalway gave a great display with Gary Dillon outstanding at centrefield. Others to shine were Robert Raftery, Stephen Cunniffe and Jimmy Noone.

THE GARDEN

Late Summer, fine weather and holidays; we tend to forget about the garden. There is no better way to spend a fine day relaxing, than in the garden watching plants flourish, birds sing and bees buzzing around collecting pollen.

At this time of the year, there are many jobs we can do. In Galway, this tends to be our driest spell of the year!!! so we must remember to keep everything watered, in particular young plants and bedding plants in troughs, buckets, window boxes etc.

In the pruning department, now is a good time to clip most types of hedging. Bedding roses will put out more blooms also if the dead flowers are removed. Wisteria Fruit trees such as cherries and plums should be pruned now, to avoid any disease entering the wounds. Flowering cherries are also in the last category, so prune now.

In the vegetable garden, this is a time when a lot of vegetables come to maturity. You should still be wary of potato blight and spray with Dithane or Hytin if conditions are prevalent. You can also do late sowing of vegetables now such as carrots and parsley for winter use. Also sow spring cabbage and winter cabbage. Crops such as runner beans, broccoli and cauliflower may now be coming in a glut, so freeze them for use later. If you found broccoli went to seed, it may be just the conditions during the year or that you didn't harvest it as it was coming in.

All soft fruit crops are coming in now also, you can freeze these if you have a glut. Apples and pears should be thinned on the trees, so as they make some size.

Greenhouse crops - side shoot tomato plants all the time. Plants should be fed with a liquid fertiliser every ten days to two weeks. If your tomatoes are green and a good size, pick them, put them in a dark, cool place and they will redden quicker.

For trees and shrubs, water regularly, generally prune after flowering. If you think plants need to be moved look at them now and plan it for the Autumn. If an area is lacking colour now, think of adding perennials for a splash of colour, in particular at this time of year any penstemons.

These are the basic jobs of the garden in later summer and can be very enjoyable and fruitful with a little work. After all, the garden is there to be enjoyed.

CLAREGALWAY JUNIOR BADMINTON CLUB

The members of the Junior Badminton Club have completed a very satisfactory season.

We have enjoyed huge success, both locally and nationally, and had lots of fun in the process.

We travelled to compete in tournaments throughout the Country, and won open competitions at venues as far afield as Belfast, Donegal, Sligo, Carrick-on-Shannon and Dublin. Five teams played in the County League and 50 players competed in the County Championships with great success. 55 prizes were presented to our players in Maree Community Centre at the Finals in March.

There was a great feeling of pride and excitement in the Club when John Forde was selected to play on the Irish U14 Team. The extent of John's achievement can be appreciated when one considers that no Junior Badminton player from Galway has ever represented his/her Country abroad. Congratulations John! Another highlight of the year was the winning of a gold medal in the U12 Irish Championships Boys Doubles event by Christopher Keane. His partner was Alan Flaherty of Tuam Badminton Club. Christopher and Alan knocked out the highly fancied number one seeds from Leinster in the first round of the competition, which certainly ruffled a lot of feathers in Badminton Circles at national level.

I thank all the parents and members of the club who were so generous and kind to John when he travelled to Scotland.

We have recently organised a very successful coaching weekend for our younger players, who showed great dedication throughout the entire weekend. We are grateful to the following sponsors who helped defray the cost of the weekend:

Mary Moran - Lakeview, Quinnsworth, Dawn Dairies, Fyffes, Statoil, Corrib Oil, Monaghan & Sons Ltd. Car Sales

The session for the more senior players is on August 23rd, 24th, 25th.

The U15 team will represent Connacht in the Community Games in Mosney at the end of August. Each and every team member:- Caroline Garrett, Kathryn Lennon, Sheena Tierney, Cathy Casserly, Enda O'Connell, John Forde, John Horgan and Brian Casserly, put in excellent performances at the Connacht finals in Roscommon on Sat. 27th July. We wish them the best of luck in the National Finals.

I have enjoyed every minute of this season watching all the games and travelling in good company. I am very proud of all our members and thank each one for their contribution to the success of the club.

"THE GROWING TREE" MONTESSORI SCHOOL

DAYS TO REMEMBER

This year our school went to Renville for our school trip and it was one of our most successful outings ever. Renville has everything you could need for a group of enthusiastic Montessori children.

The big day arrived and the children armed with buckets, and bouncing with energy set off on their journey to Renville. Our first visit was to the shore where we collected many items to enhance our nature table back at school. After visiting the boats, our next stop was the park. We were all well and truly ready for the big picnic and as usual this was the highlight of the day. The picnic area is well equipped and the playground next to it is one of the nicest we have ever seen. Here the children ran off some energy. The slide and swings were very popular on the day and yes we had a game of football. We had a slightly quieter journey back to the school. Thanks to the parents who helped - a very enjoyable day was had by all.

SCHOOL SPORTS

Oh, what fun is our annual school sports. The novelty events we will surely remember. Every child took part and each received a medal.

We have said our goodbye's to the Class of '96 having ended on a high note. Paddy the Magician from Quay St. provided entertainment for the children. This was followed by the children's concert. Their early shyness is long gone. Every child takes part in the concert and we sure saw the blossoming of each child's personality. Following the presentation of Certificates, refreshments were served for parents and children.

Our thanks to all the parents for their help and support during the year. Thanks to Tony Gately who came along at Christmas, Tony played some Christmas Carols on his guitar. We had a great sing along and it surely got us into the Christmas spirit. Thanks to Santa who paid us a surprise visit. Our thanks also to Garda Pat Heneghan who called to the school and had a chat with the children. Yes, we had a few volunteers to join the ranks.

As always, the end of year brings a certain sadness with the children moving on, it is like a member of a family leaving but they are not gone forever, they all return to see us. So September is approaching, bringing new children on their first step outside the home and we look forward to meeting them and their parents.

Mary Fleming

Note: There are other Montessori Schools in the Community area. We look forward to obtaining details in due course.
