April - long evenings
and the weather changing from the grimness of winter to the throes of summer.
If you are a gardener or a farmer you long for these days to arrive.
Everything in the garden can be done now.
In the vegetable garden you can sow seed potatoes, maincrop varieties from now
such as Kerrs Pink, Records, Roosters and Golden Wonders. Sow onion sets and
shallots, cabbage plants (early york varieties). You could also start sowing
direct with carrots and parsnips. Those with the carrot fly problem sow the
variety Parano. Also if you sow early, and pick early and by sowing garlic cloves
or onion sets between the rows of carrots; this also helps to prevent the carrot
fly. Other plants such as lettuce, scallions, tomato plants, etc are best left
to be planted towards the end of the month.
Sowing a lawn in April is ideal, as the soil temperature is high and the seed
germinates a lot quicker. Sow a lawn with a no. 2 seed mixture at a rate of
2 ozs to the square yard or 35 gms to the square metre. Rake the seed in lightly
after sowing and roll lightly afterwards.
Your lawn will need feeding now. Feed with a Golden Vale 3:1 lawn, WEED and
FEED. This has a general fertiliser to feed the lawn, two weedkillers (2-4 D
and McPA) to kill any weeds in the lawn, and sulphate of iron to kill any moss
and give the grass a dark green colour.
If you have a lot of moss in your lawn, you may need to scarify it. The moss
is made up of a layer known as thatch - made up of dead grass and moss and has
a spongy effect when you walk on it. You can scarify it - hire a scarify or
put a scarifying blade on your lawnmower (ask your lawnmower agent or hire shop).
This roots out all the old grass and moss. Collect this and then apply your
3:1 lawn WEED and FEED.
TIP: Always have at least an inch of grass on your lawn, never cut too low and
always collect your grass clippings. Feed at least once a year.
All trees and shrubs can be sown now. Feed all established trees and shrubs
now with any general tree and shrub fertiliser or 7:6:17; at a rate of 2 ozs
to each plant. Plants in flower now to look out for, these are especially nice,
would be Prunus Shirontae, a double white flowering cherry with prostate branches
and Dicentra Formosa, known as fisherman's rod or the bleeding heart. This is
a perennial with a beautiful arching stem of red flowers. The last one is Osmanthus
Burkwoodii, and evergreen shrub with a beautiful white scented flower from April-May.
With summer type weather arriving people are asking about bedding plants. Bedding plants should not be planted out until the 1st or 2nd week in May when the threat of frost is gone.
The following is
a little advice on how to plant up a hanging basket:
a) with moss or a bought liner, line the basket packing moss firmly in place.
It is easier to work the moss if it is slightly moist.
b) fill the basket with a multi-purpose compost or potting compost and firm
it in gently.
When filling, rest the basket on a bucket to stop it moving.
c) remove well watered plants from their pots. Plant from the centre working
outwards firming the plants in place as you go.
d) water the basket evenly and hang in a greenhouse/tunnel or a well lit and
sheltered spot, for about two weeks so that the plants can establish.
Plants such as lobelia trailing varieties, trailing geraniums, pelarogoniums,
surlinia petunias felicia, helichrysum etc are ideal in hanging baskets. I will
advise on all these and the best buys and how to match and mix colours in beds
in the next issue.
That's it for now,
happy gardening,

Hurling training
is underway at the moment. Teams of all grades are preparing for their respective
competitions. The Senior team train on Tuesday and Friday evenings at 7:30 p.m.
The Senior team are also playing challenge games and tournaments.
On Easter Monday they played in the Liam Mellows Hurling Tournament to the memory
of Gerard Cameron. The four invited teams were Carnmore, Loughrea, Clarinbridge
and Liam Mellows. Loughrea versus Liam Mellows and Carnmore versus Clarinbridge
was the draw for the opening games. Loughrea had a six point win over Liam Mellows.
Loughrea secured their win late in the game with two easy goals. Carnmore had
a great game in their battle with Clarinbridge. Both teams were almost at full
strength and it was played with a championship edge to it. Carnmore opened the
scoring with a good point from Liam Fahy followed by a point from a 65 'y' by
Patrick Killilea. Clarinbridge replied with a point. Liam Fahy was on target
again with another point and had a great effort for a goal saved. Michael Killilea
scored two good points. Clarinbridge responded with two good points. Liam Fahy
was on target with an excellent goal. Clarinbridge added another point before
half-time to two from Carnmore, one from Declan Walsh and one from Damian Fahy,
leaving the score at half-time Carnmore 1-7, Clarinbridge 4 points.
The second half
was a tough affair with Carnmore playing against a strong breeze. Four points
for Carnmore during this half, two from Michael Killilea, one from Liam Fahy
and one from Tomas Grealish. Clarinbridge scored seven points during the second
half and had two 21 yard frees well saved by the Carnmore defence. This was
a good performance, some individuals played excellently, particularly goalie
Shane Hynes and full forward Liam Fahy. Final score Carnmore 1-11 to 0-11 points.
The final against Loughrea was played immediately after this tough game. This
was a big disadvantage to Carnmore. They played very well in the first half
leading by 1 goal 11 points to 5 points at half-time but playing with a strong
breeze. Carnmore ran out of steam in the second-half and Loughrea won on a scoreline
of 2 goals and sixteen points to 1 goal and fourteen points.
Scorers for Carnmore: Martin Connell 1 point, Tomas Grealish 3 points, Damian
Fahy 5 points, Michael Killilea 3 points, Patrick Killlilea 1 point, Liam Fahy
1 goal and 1 point.
The Senior Hurling championship for 1997 commences on the weekend of the 19th
and 20th April.
This is the groupings
for the championship:
Group A: Portumna, Ballindereen, Kilconieron, St. Thomas's, Abbydunirs.
Group B: Ardrahan, Killimordaly, Carnmore, Castlegar, Sarsfield.
Group C: Clarinbridge, Turloughmore, Kinvar, Pearses, Liam Mellows.
Group D: Gort, Abbeyknockmoy, Mullagh, Loughrea, Athenry.
The Junior A competitions are commencing and a strong panel of players are eligible
and have been informed. Training will be with the Senior Team on Tuesday and
Friday evenings. We can be very optimistic with the strong panel, we expect
to have competitive games every weekend, already the city league competition
has commenced. We had a great win over Castlegar on Easter Sunday in the first
game of the City League. This was a fine team effort with great displayes from
Kevin Moran, Padraic Connell, John Keogh and Michael Grealish. The final score
was Carnmore 4 goals and 12 points to Castlegar 3 goals and 5 points.
So the message
to the Junior A Panel is, we have a fine panel, if you put in the effort we
can win this Championship. There are two groups in the Junior A championship.
Our group is: Carnmore, Kilconieron, Spiddal, Sylane, Fomenagh, Ballindereen,
and Ahascaragh.
The Under 21 team has four points from two games in their championship group
games. The minor championship is just getting under way. The under 14 team had
a couple of good wins in the Turloughmore Tornament with wins over Abbeyknockmoy
and Turloughmore.
At Carnmore Hurling pitch on Friday 11th April at 8:15 p.m. the pitch and grounds
will be blessed by Fr. Tommy Marrinan. This will be followed by mass at 8:30
p.m. in the Community Centre. The mass will be offered for deceased members
and friends of the hurling clubs. Everybody is invited.
B. Linnane.
A Prayer for
Those Who Live Alone
I LIVE alone, dear Lord, Stay by my side.
In all my daily needs, be Thou my guide.
Grant me good health, For that indeed, I pray,
To carry on my work from day to day.
Keep pure my mind, my thoughts, my every deed,
Let me be kind, unselfish, in my neighbours need,
Spare me from fire, from flood, malicious tongues,
From thieves, from fear, and evil ones.
If sickness or an accident befall, then humbly, Lord, I pray,
Hear, Thou my call and when I'm feeling low, or in despair,
Lift up my heart, and help me in my prayer.
I live alone, dear Lord, Yet have no fear,
Because I feel Your Presence ever near.
The Cross in
My Pocket
I carry a cross in my pocket, a simple reminder to me
Of the fact that I am a Christian, no matter where I may be.
This little cross
is not magic, nor is it a good luck charm
It isn't meant to protect me from every physical harm.
It's not for identification
for all the world to see,
It's simply an understanding between my Saviour and me.
When I put my hand
in my pocket to bring out a coin or key
The cross is there to remind me of the price He paid for me.
It reminds me,
too, to be thankful for my blessings day by day
And to strive to serve Him better in all that I do and say.
It's also a daily
reminder of the peace and comfort I share
with all who know my Master and give themselves to His care.
So, I carry a cross
in my pocket reminding no one but me
That Jesus Christ is Lord of my life if only I'll let Him be.

Electrolysis:
Suitable for small ares such as chin and upper lip. Electrolysis is a method
of removing hair permanently. This is done by passing an electric current through
a fine needle inserted into the hair follicle, cauterising the blood vessels
supplying it and so, killing the hair, which is then removed. If you have a
hormonal imbalance, the hairs will start sprouting in new places. Effectiveness
depends very much on the individual . Some people say they experience hair loss
almost immediately; with others it takes longer.
Electrolysis over a period of time will bring about results in nine out of ten
people.
After-care: The treated area is covered with antiseptic cream or lotion. The
client must if possible refrain from using make-up for twenty-four hours.

Salthill 2-5 Claregalway 0-11 at The Prairie
In a fast and highly entertaining game we drew with Salthill in the first round
of the league at the Prairie. The score was 2-5 to 0-11, our scores coming from
Niall McGovern (4), Gary Hurney (3), Derek Murray (2), Liam Hyland and Anthony
Monaghan 1 point each. These were two well matched sides and a scrambled goal
just before half time after John McGrath had saved well gave Salthill a 1-4
to 0-5 lead at the break. Ten minutes into the second half Salthill struck again
for a goal to go ahead by 2-5 to 0-8. Full credit to Claregalway for a strong
recovery, scoring 3 points while holding Salthill scoreless. We had a couple
of last minute shots that went close but not close enough for a win. The displays
of Anthony Monaghan and Niall McGovern at mid-field, Patrick Stephens, George
Fox and Damien Noonan in the backs, G.Hurney and D.Murray in the forwards deserve
special mention.
To come: April 16 at home to Oranmore; April 24 away to Carraroe; April 30 at
home to Ml.Breathnach; throw-in at 7pm.
Mionúir Co.na Gaillimhe: A number of our club minors were called up for county trials: Patrick Stephens, Anthony Monaghan, Kenny Watson, Niall McGovern, Derek Murray, George Fox, Gary Hurney. Best of luck to all.

We took a 2 point lead on two occasions in the last quarter only to be pegged back each time by a Killanin goal. Declan Langan's goal and Damien Noonan's upfield surge to score 1-1 in the last few minutes were highlights. Gary Dillon and Andrew Flanagan played very well in the backs; Enda O'Connell and Robert Lennon came into their own in the second half while Anthony Watson, Enda Flaherty, Nicholas Fox and sub, John Keogh, took their scores well.
In the second round we beat Spiddel at the Leisure Centre by 1-13 to 2-3. Scorers: D.Stephens 1-1; J.Keogh, N.Fox, R.Lennon, E.Flaherty, M.Flaherty 2 points each; E.O'Connell 2 points including an excellent '45'.

Claregalway
Dear Sir,
May I make a few comments on "Letter to the Editor" in the March issue
of Nuacht Chlár? Thank you.
This publication is, is it not, a local newsletter? Therefore, we expect to
read local news. Anybody who wishes to may submit articles on a topic which
would be of interest to the people of the Claregalway/Carnmore area. If the
same people/clubs/organisations etc. have news for each issue, then why shouldn't
it be printed? If others wish to make contributions, then why don't they?
The business people who support Nuacht Chlár are obviously people with
a Community spirit and to them may I say "fair play to you" and "thanks".
I have a copy of Moycullen Matters in front of me at the moment and I notice
that it costs £1. Nuacht Chlár is a FREE publication; but then
is this not the era where we expect to get "everything" for nothing?
I suppose this "new technology" the writer talks about, will appear
out of nowhere and for nothing also! I doubt it.
Finally, why did Nuacht Chlár reappear after being out of circulation
for some time? The people wanted it, that's why. So, if anyone does not wish
to read Nuacht Chlár, then just leave it where it is. There are plenty
of others who will have it instead. No-one is forcing you to take it.
Many thanks and keep up the good work.
Yours,
Patricia Carton
I
have no problem with my name being printed as I believe in what I have written.
