SCOUT NEWS
Croagh Patrick - On the 11th May a large group of Claregalway Scouts assembled
at Claregalway National School at 7 a.m. We were all prepared for the bus journey
to Croagh Patrick to complete a task which we had set ourselves over a year
ago. As usual, everyone full of enthusiasm for the trial ahead! We arrived at
the foot of the reek at 9 a.m. everyone well decked out in their rain gear and
walking shoes for the climb ahead. It was very overcast when we arrived and
none of us were able to see the summit. Having inquired from the Met Station,
I was satisfied that the haze would clear. All the Scouts except for one or
two had never climbed the reek before and it had been some ten years since I
had climbed it and at that time I found it hard so I was not relishing the thought
of the climb ahead. The climb started, and in true Scout fashion the starting
pace was fast. Joe O'Connell, one of our leaders, managed to keep ahead of the
posse and he made sure that all were safe as we climbed.
Collette Conneely, another leader, stayed in the middle and encouraged some
of the faint hearted of which there were few. Of course, I took up the rear
to make sure we had no stranglers (truth is I found the going tough!). As we
neared the top, the sun started to shine (whoever said the Met Office gets it
wrong) and the clouds lifted and the view was breathtaking. Those in the group
who were studying for their Junior Cert said that the view they had of Clew
Bay put into reality all they had learned in their text books about the Irish
coastline. As we climbed, the pilgrimage proper was also observed and the prayers
were said around St. Patrick's bed, etc. On reaching the top, the expression
on everyone's face spelt pure joy and a great sense of achievement, bar my own
of which I was told was of "pure exhaustion"! The descent was much
easier and we adjourned to Supermacs in Ballinrobe to recoup.
Well done to all the Scouts.

THE DANNAN SHIELD
That time of year had come when the Dannan Shield competition was being held
again. This year Corofin were the host troop and the pressure was on Claregalway
Scout Troop to do well after their unprecendented 1st, 2nd and 3rd at last year's
event. This year again we entered three teams. We were somewhat depleted as
a number of our Scouts were studying for their Junior Cert so they had to cry
off. Nevertheless, we managed to field three teams. It was a first time outing
for some of our Junior Scouts who only joined us in September, but they had
good Leaders on each team. This would be a learning exercise for most of them.
The weather for the weekend was very hot (in fact the hottest week we had in
years). Still, they were all well prepared and were full of enthusiasm for what
lay ahead. The competition lasted over the whole weekend from Friday the 30th
May to Sunday the 1st June. It was well known that this year the opposition
was going to be very strong and we were told that this time around the Shield
was going elsewhere, as everyone likes to dethrone the holders no matter what
sport you take part in.
For the whole weekend the competition was keen but that did not prevent our
doing what is most important to do and that was enjoy themselves. Between cooking,
doing first aid, compass and pioneering, they were kept busy. Each troop had
also to put on a skit or play - one part of the competition at which our troop
are famous at, having won that part of the competition at the Smyth Cup last
year which is the All-Ireland for Scouts.
Sunday morning arrived and the moment of truth had arrived . Each troop gathered
around and the group Leader from Corofin announced that only 1st and 2nd could
represent the Danann District in the Smyth Cup (The All-Ireland). He started
from the top 1st place Hawk Patrol Claregalway - Bridget Moran, Jacqueline Moran,
Cyril Duggan, Martin Duggan, David Crowe, Deirdre Noone, Jarlath Conneely.
2nd place Cobra Control Claregalway - James Moran, Brede Noone, Caroline Garrett,
Lorraine Noone, Arthur Moran, Darragh Lambert McMichael, Michael O'Connell.
The place erupted into a mad frenzy of singing and cheering, as Claregalway
were once again triumphant - this was a win to be savoured. Yes, Claregalway
were once again going forward to the All-Irelands. What a wonderful achievement.
All I can say is that we are all proud of the great troop of Scouts we have
and I know they will once again do us proud in the All-Irelands.

The S.M.A. held
their second Family Day on the 1st June. The weather was beautiful and it was
a delight to see everyone having such a good time. The children had a great
time - the animation on their faces said it all. It was superbly organised with
a variety of stalls offering brillant bargains, wheel of fortune, face painting,
dancing, flower and cake sales. The children had a great time on the bouncing
castle and taking part in sack races. Well done to the organisers and continued
success for future events. All proceeds are sent to the missions in Africa.

Herbal Health - Herbal medicine is among the most respected of alternative
therapies and offers safe and simple remedies that can benefit everyone. Re-discovering
the traditional uses of herbs for both medicinal and beauty purposes is a fragrant
pleasure. While modern medicine now offers a "pill for every ill"
many women want natural safe remedies for discomforts associated with the menstrual
cycle and menopausal symptoms. Up until only a hundred years ago, it was customary
for the woman of the house to select herbs from her garden and wild plants from
the fields and hedgegrows to prepare medicines for the health needs of her family.
These days, though few of us have direct access to such sources, but specialist
shops and suppliers mean we can still enjoy the benefits that herbs have to
offer.

scoring 4-27,
4-12 and 2-9 respectively in the three games.

1-17 and 0-17 respectively.

THE JUNIOR C

win over Rahoon-Newcastle. Some good displays from full back Thomas Fox, John
Abbott, Dick Fitzgerald, Nigel Donovan, John O'Hagan, Gerry and Raymond Madden.
Full-forward and manager Gerry Fox who rattled the net on a couple of occasions
and corner forward Pat Fox who was electric, scoring a great goal. The final
score was Carnmore 5-4, Rahoon Newcastle 2-7.
The following teams make up the Carnmore group: Rahoon-Newcastle, Craughwell,
Beagh, Ballinderreen and Carnmore. Two teams qualify for the quarter finals.
THE UNDER 14
TEAM qualified for the county final which was played on Monday last at Ballinasloe.
The team had a great victory in the semi-final over a highly rated St. Thomas's
team. The final score in the semi-final was Carnmore 4-6 to St. Thomas's 4-3.
This was a great team display. The final was against Liam Mellows. Carnmore
played well in the first half, playing with the wind. Liam Mellows were first
to score. George Hanley tapped over a nice point, leaving the half-time score
4 points to 1 in favour of Liam Mellows . Carnmore started brightly in the second
half and with a bit more strenght up front , could have scored a couple of goals.
George Hanley ( the best forward for Carnmore ) scored another very good point.
The final score was Liam Mellows 1-7 to Carnmore 0-2.
Liam Mellows were physically much stronger and this made all the difference. There
was no difference bewteen the teams in skill or commitment and their are definitely
some great hurlers coming through who will wear the Carnmore jersey with distinction
in the future.

Minors Win League
Final: Claregalway 2-11 Ml.Breathnach 1-8
In an exciting final at Oughterard on Wednesday May 14 our minors beat Ml.Breathnach
by 2-11 to 1-8. In doing so, we recorded our first success at this level since
we won the 'B' league and championship double in 1991. The 6 point margin does
not reflect the closeness of the exchanges throughout because this game was
in the balance from an early stage and it was only in the last 5 minutes or
so that a win looked likely. Although we were first to score with a point, Ml.Breathnach
responded with 1-1 and from there on, both sides traded scores to set the pattern
for the game. Scores were level on a number of occasions and we held a 1-4 to
1-3 lead at half time. Eventually we established a 3 point lead with 10 minutes
to go. But, Ml.Breathnach continued to attack and it was only when Gary Hurney
scored his second goal near the end that the result was put beyond doubt.
Damien Noonan who was selected at full back in place of the injured Patrick Stephens settled down to give a good second half display and he got good support from Comán Duke Farrell and Derek Murphy. Up front, Derek Murray's tally of 7 points both from play and from frees deserves special praise. The Imperial Hotel Perpetual cup was presented to team captain Anthony Monaghan by Paddy Sweeny, Chairman, West G.P.C. and the team panel returned for reception and refreshments arranged by Sean Dunleavy, Nine Arches.
Team: Ronan McGrath,
Comán Duke Farrell, Damien Noonan, Derek Murphy, Robert Lennon, Kenny
Watson, Eoin Hynes, Anthony Monaghan (0-2), Keith Holland, Adrian Moran (0-1),
Jude Ainsworth (0-1), Derek Murray (0-7), Paul Kenny, Enda O'Connell,
Gary Hurney (2-0). Subs: Patrick Walsh, Nicholas Fox, John Flanagan, Joseph
Noone, Simon Kilgannon, Liam Hyland, Damien Stephens.
Team Manager: Fergus Madden, to whom the club is indebted for his work with
the team.
Co.Minors: It was a unique distinction for Claregalway G.A.A. to have 4 club minors on the Co.Galway team that played Mayo in the Connacht championship at Castlebar - Patrick Stephens, Anthony Monaghan, Derek Murray and sub Kenny Watson.
Co.U-16 Challenge:
Galway City 3-12 Sligo 2-7
In preparation for the Inter-county Ted Webb Cup competition, Galway City U-16
footballers beat Sligo in a challenge match at the Leisure Centre on May 30
last. Several Claregalway players are on the panel - Damien Noonan, Nicholas
Fox, Enda O'Connell, Robert Lennon, Anthony Davoren, Paul Kilgannon, John P.
O'Connell.
U-16's in League Semi-final Although fielding a depleted team when beaten by St.Michael's at Westside in the last round of the league, Claregalway had already qualified for the knock-out stages. Claregalway play Oranmore/Maree in the semi-final.
U-14's: In the league Claregalway lost to both Spiddal and Oranmore/Maree and had a good win over Mervue which could put us in a play off.
U-12's: The league starts on Sunday September 7 when we play Moycullen away. Meanwhile, we travelled to play Fr.Griffins recently and gave a very encouraging display. Gerry Giles in goal, Michael O'Connor, Rory Dillon and Trevor Casserly in the backs, Phillip Raftery and Paul Loughlin at mid field, Ronan Mangan, Niall Gibbons in the forwards were especially prominent.
Galway v Mayo: The Juvenile Football committee organised bus transport for the U-14 and U-12 team panels to go and see the big match. Fifth players travelled and were accompanied by club mentors. Tuam Stadium, the cathedral of Galway football, was full of tension even before the throw-in and all who travelled confirmed that the outing was fully worthwhile.
U-10's: Annaghdown travelled to the Leisure Centre on Sunday morning, June 1 and we played them in 2 games.
Co.Development Draw tickets are now on sale. There will be 6 major draws held once monthly for the next six months for new motor cars. £1,000 cash prizes, holidays abroad etc. The tickets cost £60 each and there are special early 'bird prizes' for those paying the full amount at the start. Half of the proceeds are allocated to the club and half to the Co.Board.
Our players and followers now enjoy the facilities of our new club centre, ample evidence of the use made of funds raised to date. The club wishes to develop further for the Year 2000 and beyond. We therefore appeal to all our followers to support this draw which is such a vital source of income for us. Contact Committee officers, Tom Newell, P.J.McGovern or Tony Stephens (Tel. 798217).

Cathair Ghamhain or Summerfield or Cathair Ghabhainn ?
'Carved or hewn
in stone' - as were the Ten commandments - is an expression that has
come to mean permanence or durability. The placing of name stones at the head
of a village bohereen (bóithrin) - in ancient Ireland a bye-road or laneway
wide enough to accomodate two cows(Bó) with their calves and yearlings
- has given rise to some discussion as to the proper spellings of the village
names, such as Cahergowan. The Béal-oideas or oral instruction/wisdom
of an area will usually throw more light on the meaning and acccurate spelling
than the 'folksy legend ' (folklore) it is sometimes made to be. In the case
of Cahergowan,we have the most reliable word of Johnnie Casserly that its name
derives from the fact that within the village there existed a cattle pound.
Nothing to do with a Gabha or smith, you might think.
Yet how could such
a facility turn Cahergowan into a Cathair or city?. The usual Irish names
for a village or townland was baile,as in Baile 'n Chláir. Yet in Dinneen's
Irish-English Dictionary
(1927), under Cathair we find it to have another meaning, " a circular
stone fort, common to topography" (page 170), - Cahersiveen in Kerry being
then the stone fort of Sabina - while under Gamhain ( page 515) we find "a
calf". Under alternative spellings here not only does he
give Gamhan but also Gabhain. It would seem clear from this that Cahergowan might
mean a circular stone for the calves. However Dinneen has one more surprise for
us. Under Gabhainn ( page 504) he gives the following meanings, " a place
of restraint,a pen or pound,a bonded store etc."
This would mean the best spelling should then be Cathair Ghabhainn, the ( circular)
stone pond, or pen for cattle - which was, possibly, an adaptation of an older
Lios (Rath) as P.W. Joyce points out under Lisnagowan in his The Origin and
History of Irish Names of Places (1869,page 284).
Where then does
the Summerfield of the Ordnance Survey map come from ?.We know from Lodge's
Peerage of 1837 ( page 114) that Ulick John de Burgh, 14th. Earl of Clanricarde
and Baron of Dunkellin was also made a U.K. Baron of Somerhill, Co. Kent, in
1826 but they had lost their holdings around here many years previously. In
the meantime John Bingham was created a baron in 1800, presumably for delivering
both his own vote (Newbrook, Co Mayo) and his wife's vote (Lady Avonmore of
Fortfield, Co Dublin, Lord Lucan's people??) for the Act of Union and made up
for himself the more Irish sounding Baron Clanmorris title(not Claremorris).
One of his sons had a marriage connection to the Ffrenches of Galway. In the
Applottment Book ( a record of Church titles based on acreage) of the 1820's
the third Lord, Dennis Arthur Bingham, is shown as having considerable estates
in the Bawnmore, Kinisky, Claregalway, Sommerville, Monetough and Rampark line
of villages. I give the spellings as I find them there. I have a recollection
of a field for young calves being called a summerfield , but I have no references
to such as we go to press. Perhaps some reader can further enlighten us on this
point. (Contributions to this article or some reflections on the origins of
village names around Claregalway are very welcome)
