ARE ALL PARENTS AWARE OF DYSLEXIA?

Dyslexia is one of the hidden disabilities. It is a specific problem with learning to read, write and spell correctly. It is not caused by a lack of ability, by emotional or physical problems nor is it because a person has not been taught properly. It is thought to be due to differences in the way in which the brain works. It affects up to 8% of the population and is more common in males. Indications that dyslexia may be present are:
1) Unexpected problems with reading, writing, spelling and sometimes with numbers also.
2) A family history of literacy difficulties.
3) Early speech and language difficulties.
4) Problems with remembering common sequences, e.g. alphabet, months of the year, multiplication tables.
5) Problems with following more than one instruction, remembering messages, etc.
6) Poor hand, eye co-orindation.
7) Difficulties with written language.

The Garden

April is the month when winter finally slips its chilly grip and the first real hint of summer is felt. with longer evenings encroaching and rising soil temperatures, growth begins in earnest. The soil will be drying out enough to allow the sowing of seeds. There is usually a period of ideal sowing weather in April and take advantage of this.
The lawn is still some peoples first start in the garden this month. You can continue cutting now on a regular basis, if conditions are o.k. A lot of people have come in and asked about moss and scarifying the lawn. A lawn over a period of time can build up a spongy layer called thatch. This is a mix of old dead grass and you get this spongy layer in the lawn This can be got rid of by scarifying your lawn. You can either hire a scarifier or get a scarifying blade put on to your existing lawnmower. This roots out all this layer and will leave you with a lot of debris to rake up and get rid of. You could then apply something like the Golden Vale 3:1 which will feed the lawn, and kill off any remaining moss and weeds in the lawn. This is applied at a rate of 2 ozs to the square yard.

All established trees and shrubs can be continued to be fed with any tree and shrub fertiliser or with 7:6:17 at a rate of roughly 2 ozs to each plant. All the summer bulbs can still be planted, such as Dahlias, Lilies, Begonias, Gladioli, etc.

Getting vegetable seeds off to a good start is a very important factor for successful vegetable growing. If the seeds are weakened by unfavourable soil conditions, the young plants may struggle to become established and may not do that well.
There is the problem of gaps in the row of seedlings, caused by variations of conditions along the length of the row. This is usually caused by uneven soil preparation due to lumpy or wet ground. Apart from being a waste of effort, gaps in the cover of vegetables encourage weeds.
An important point to consider about sowing vegetable seeds is the firmnesss of the tilth - the top few inches of finely cultivated soil. For large vegetables such as peas and beans this need not be so fine. But for smaller seeds such as onions, carrotts and lettuce, the tilth needs to be as fine as sugar if possible.
Be careful however not to overdo the tilling of soil. If it is made too fine, a problem called capping can occur. This occurs when the fine soil sticks together after rain to form a capping on the surface. Small seedlings can find it impossible to break through this layer. A shake of coarse sand raked into the surface of the seed bed before sowing will prevent the problem.
Finally, be careful not to sow vegetable seeds too deeply - the effort involved in pushing to the surface can be too much for them.
Seed packets often give very shallow sowing depths for vegetables, perhaps between 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch. In practice, a sowing depth of a 1/2 is difficult to achieve and most gardeners will sow a bit more deeply, but don't sow any deeper than 1 in.

That's it for now, happy gardening,
Bosco McDermott Jnr., Glynn's Garden Centre, Lydican, Oranmore.

CLAREGALWAY AGRICULTURAL SHOW RACE NIGHT

The white flag was raised and they were off. The first of the twelve races took off to a flying start. A great crowd turned up in the Summerfield Bar on Friday, 6th March, to support the Claregalway Agricultural Show Race Night. Malachy Noone gave a fantastic commentary on all the races and his witty remarks brought screams of laughter from the race goers. Mr. Liam Belton operated the projector with his usual efficiency, and everything ran smoothly for the entire evening.

The betting was very exciting throughout the evening, and while some people made a little profit, others were not so lucky. The Auction Race was the highlight of the evening, with one of the horses fetching well over £100. Ms. Surney Dempsey, our Show Queen, looking elegant as always, was on hand to present the prizes.

First past the winning post in the Auction Race was Alan Horan's horse. The prize for this race was a portable Television, which was part sponsored by O'Connor's Incredible Planet. One of Tom McKenna's horses came in second and his prize was a beautiful lamp, sponsored by Cre Irish Porcelain. The favourite for the Auction Race, gracefully named, after much deliberation "Who Flung Dung" is still not accounted for!

Claregalway Agricultural Show Committee wish to express our sincere thanks to all our race sponsors, all who purchased horses, all who donated spot prizes, all who purchased horses in the auction race and all who bet on the night. Thanks to Surney Dempsey, Malachy Noone, Liam Belton and Julie and tom McKenna for their assistance.

We hope you all had a pleasant, enjoyable evening and renewed thanks for your support.

Secretary

CLAREGALWAY LEISURE CENTRE

A meeting was held on the 23rd of March in relation to the proposed Summer Camp. This meeting was successful in that sufficient support is apparently available to ensure the running of the Camp.

The forms have been distributed to children in the school which must be returned as indicated. These forms may also be handed in to the Leisure Centre, should that be more convenient. Anyone interested in participating in the Summer Camp are advised to return their forms immediately.

The Basketball Marathon in scheduled to go ahead on Sunday 19th April. This is an important Fund-Raising venture, and your support will be sought by the participating children who have sponsorship cards. Your generosity will be appreciated by everyone who avails of the facilities at the Leisure Centre.

Baile an Chláir

If a full description of the Club's history is written, the author may wish to record several prolonged discussions on Irish placenames for Claregalway. Parkinson would be reassured to know that we obey some of his rules! So, let us recall again an extract from Aodán McGlynn's article of July/August 1997 which points to 'Baile an Chláir' being the original version:
Claregalway - "There is a place in Galway which was formerly called by this name, where a great Abbey was founded in the thirteenth century, and a Castle in the sixteenth, both of which are still to be seen in ruins; the place is mentioned by the Four Masters, who call it Baile-an-Chláir, but it retains only a part of this old name, being now called Clare-Galway to distinguish it from other Clares"
Reference: P.W.Joyce in 'The Origin and History of Irish Names of Places', Vol.1 p.427. Research in recent weeks by Paul Concannon has provided further evidence for the same conclusion. Another reference for 'Baile an Chláir' is entered in the AA Road Book of Ireland, Gazetteer 1970 p.122 (The Town of the Plain). It is also found in Gaiscigh an Achreidh (1985) pp 34, 49. As a result 'Baile an Chláir' is the name chosen for the Club's logo.

JUVENILE HURLING NEWS

Under 14's Day Out to Dublin
On St. Patrick's Day Tomás Grealish took his under 14 panel to Croke Park. The 7 a.m. start from Carnmore pitch resulted in an enjoyable traffic free trip to the capital. Tomás had a match arranged for the under 14's with Kilmacud Crokes at 11 a.m.
However, on arrival in Stillorgan the only team available to play against our team was Kilmacud U 15's, which included much older and stronger players than Carnmore. In spite of this, Carnmore played with great determination and showed great promise for the future.
Afterwards, the Juvenile team and mentors met up with the Carnmore Senior Team and were highly entertained at a reception hosted by Kilmacud G.A.A. Then it was on to Croke Park for the Club Finals. A fair hurling match was folllowed by a brilliant win for Corofin in the football.
Supermac's in Moate on our way home was our next stop. Everybody seemed to have a great appetite at that stage. To Carnmore pitch at 10:55 p.m. that night. A long but very enjoyable day.
A special word of thanks from the Juvenile Committee to the Group of Parents/Helpers who travelled with the team.
The following is the panel that travelled on the day which included a few very young players/supporters:

CARNMORE HURLING CLUB NEWS

Training is well under way in the club with the first rounds of the Senior and Junior A Championship approaching at the end of April and the beginning of May respectively. A superb number of players are turning out each Tuesday and Thursday evening showing great commitment and vigour to that long awaited goal - winning the County Championship.
The Junior A team have been drawn with the following teams in the Championship Draw: Castlegar, Fohenagh, Clarinbridge Kiltormer & Sylane. This is a very tough group but the lads are looking forward to the challenge. The ACC City Junior A Hurling League draw is as follows: Castlegar, L/Mellows, Ardrahan, Oran/Maree & Clarinbridge. This competition is scheduled to begin towards the end of April, with the top two teams to contest the final.

ST PATRICK'S DAY TRIP TO DUBLIN

St. Patrick's Day saw two coaches leave on a trip to Dublin where both the senior and juvenile teams played a challenge game against Kilmacud Crokes. The seniors won the game convincingly. The team and supporters then proceeded to Croke Park to support Sarsfields and Corofin. Unfortunately, Sarsfields had no answer to Birr's more youthful and livelier outift who powered their way to win the All Ireland Club Hurling Final. Congratulations to Sarsfields in getting that far with the Championship.
Corofin on the other hand playd with great skill and tenacity and conquered their quest as they won the All Ireland Club Football Final. Heartiest congratultions to the Corofin Club and supporters.

The coach left Dublin on its journey home stopping off for a meal in Kinnegad. Martin Joe Greaney hosted a "sing along" with guest appearances from the Walsh brothers Keith, Declan and Ronnie and not to be outdone, the Killilea brothers Patrick and Murty. There were many other artists, too many to mention and their talent and vocal chords entertained us immensely on the journey home. All in all, it was a good day out!

JOHN MC DONAGH MEMORIAL CUP
Carnmore Seniors played Turloughmore in the John McDonagh Memorial Cup on Sunday 29th March. Turlough won the game with a result of Turloughmore 1-10, Carnmore 10-5.
Carnmore Chairman Johnny Duggan presented the Cup to Turlough Captain Pat Forde.
Eamon and Billy McDonagh presented fabulous trophies on behalf of the McDonagh family to both teams. Both teams wished each other the best of luck in the forthcoming Championship.

LOTTO NEWS
The Lotto is currently running at £4100.00. The next draw will take place in Kynes Central Tavern on Sunday 5th April. Good luck to all those who purchased tickets.
Finally, we take this opportunity to wish Liam Fahy & Suzanne Butler the best of luck in their forthcoming marriage. Health, happiness and good fortune to you both always!
