CLAREGALWAY FESTIVAL OF DRAMA

The A.G.M. of 1998 Drama Festival Committee was held recently following a very successful programme of plays. As usual a number of Groups competed in the All Ireland Finals in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford for the confined competition and in Athlone for the Open competition.
Two groups who contended in the Confined competition - Ennis players 'Equus' by Paul Shaffer and Nenagh Players with 'Flight to Grosse Ile' by Jim Minogue won the All Ireland Confined competition and secured a place at the All Ireland Open competition in Athlone. It was most satisfying to have 3 of the Groups who came to Claregalway in the All Ireland Open competition and especially so since the Groups who were placed 1st, 2nd in our Festival came 1st and 2nd in the All Ireland Open Final held in Athlone last month. They were Corn Mill Theatre Group, Carrigallen, with 'Belfry' by Billy Roche and Coolera Dramatic Society with 'The Steward of Christendom' by Sebastian Barry.

Standards were extremely high and augurs well for the future of the Festival. The Festival has been held annually since 1982 and the Committee elected the following Officers for the coming year: Festival Director - HUGH FARRELL; Festival Secretary - MARY KELLY; Recording Secretary - HELEN CAHALAN; Treasurer - JOHN BRENNAN. The Committee is anxious to have new members join and anyone interested in doing so should contact the Officers mentioned above, or any Committee member.

WHAT IS A SENIOR CITIZEN?

A Senior Citizen is one who was here before the pill, television, frozen foods, credit cards and ball point pens.
For us 'time sharing' meant togetherness, not computers.
And a 'chip' meant a piece of wood.
'Hardware' meant hard wear, and software was not even a word.

Teenagers never wore slacks or jeans, we were before tights,
Drip-dry clothes, dishwashers, clothes dryers and electric blankets.
We got married first, then lived together.
We were before disposable diapers, jeeps, pizzas, instant coffee,
MacDonalds wasn't even thought of.

In our day cigarette smoking was fashionable.
'Grass' was for mowing, 'pot' was something we cooked in;
a 'gay' person was the life and soul of the party, while 'Aids'
meant beauty lotions, or help for someone in trouble.
We are today's Senior Citizens, a hardy bunch when you think of how
The world has changed and the adjustments we have had to make.

THE GARDEN

Midway through the year, in what should be our best month weather wise, I can hear the rain pelting off the windows as I write this. Whatever fine days come our way, we should make the most of them in the garden. The following is a checklist for your garden in the month of June.
v Watch for greenfly on all plants, particularly roses, lupins and honeysuckle.
v Continue to thin out vegetables sown earlier.
v Complete planting of summer bedding plants.
v Repot old house plants or greenhouse plants.
v Pin down strawberry runners to propagate them.
v Sow cinerarias and primulas for winter flowers.
v Sow wallflowers, stocks and sweet williams.
v Apply lawn weedkillers while growth is active.
v Continue to spray roses against blackspot disease.
v Continue to spray apple trees for apple scab disease and against apple codling moth when flowering has finished.
v Plant out dahlias if not done already.
v Side shoot tomatoes and cucumbers indoors.
v Trim back aubrieta.
v Earth up potatoes to prevent greening.
v Plant outdoor tomatoes.
v Ventilate greenhouses adequately in hot weather.
v Pick gooseberries and strawberries.
v Prune late spring shrubs as soon as they finish.
v Remove rose suckers this month.
v Give a first clipping to box and privet hedges.
v Make a repeat sowing of vegetables if necessary.
v Liquid feed your summer bedding plants on a regular basis.

A common question asked is how can I add more colour to my garden shrub borders without having to put in bedding plants year after year.
Herbaceous perennial flowers are an excellent solution. These perennials die down each winter and produce new stems and foliage each spring. Most of them after a period of time can also be lifted in the Autumn and divided, increasing your stock of plants.

They add plenty of plant interest, are colorful and luxuriant in foliage and bring out the best in gardens planted in beds or borders on their own or mixed for complementary effect with shrubs or other plants. When positioning or planting new perennial take care to check their ultimate height and spread in relation to neighboring plants. Donít be afraid to experiment as there are a range of colors with distinctive shaped or foliage texture or imposing flower spikes in strategic positions. The following are a list of plants of varieties that are good for this purpose:

Alchemellia mollis Penstemons
Agapanthus Phlox
Amenomoe Polygonatm
Euphorbia Paeonys
Crocosmias Potentillas - (perennial varis)
Delphininums Rudbeckias
Geraniums - (perennial varis) Sedums
Dientras Hemerocallis
Hostas Ligularia
Lobelia Cordinalis

That's it for now, happy gardening.

CLAREGALWAY SKIN CARE & AROMATHERAPY CLINIC, KINISKA.

FACIAL MASSAGE: - Face massage is not just for beauty. It makes the recipient feel better and can have an amazing effect on the body. Naturally, relaxing the facial muscles with massage will make clients look better, as the face absorbs many stresses and emotions and facial tension is ageing. But it also reflects the tensions and problems in the body too. 'Facial massage' should be beautiful to watch as well as receive and perform. Enjoying the massage in a facial is as important for the therapist as the client, and taking note of areas of tension and concentrating on them is also important.
Facial massage can be firm without being heavy, and deep with a light touch.
Facial massage is a vital element of the salon treatment.

U-16's: After a slow start to the Division 1 Co. League, it is now all to play for. Claregalway qualified for the semi finals with a win over Ml. Breathnach by 2-8 to 0-11. The other qualifiers are St.Michaels, Oranmore and Salthill. We were slow into our stride against Ml.Breathnach who played a direct brand of football and scored six good points from outfield early on. Two goals by Paul Francis and David Walsh turned the game in our favour to give us a lead of 2-2 to 0-7 at half time. The second half was a close affair but a great display by David Raftery, well supported by Anthony Watson and Dara OíMalley, gave us an advantage around midfield and as a result, set up the match-winning points.
Scorers: Paul Francis 1-2, David Walsh 1-1, Anthony Watson 0-2, Colin Deeny 0-1, Aidan Kearney 0-1, David Raftery 0-1.

JUVENILE HURLING NEWS

UNDER 12: - Pride of place this month must go to the Under 12 panel and manager Paraic Hession for getting to the Under 12 City League Final. Three great wins on the trot over Ballinderrin in Ballinderrin, against Oranmore in Maree, and finally against Annaghdown in Carnmore secured the final spot with Rahoon/Newcastle. Very seldom a Carnmore team qualifies for the final in anything without having to play its final group match but that was the case for these under 12ís. As Rahoon/Newcastle had done likewise, winning their three matches against the same opposition as Carnmore. Both teams had qualified for the final without playing each other in their group match. So the scene was set for the final, Thursday 21st May, Westside pitch, 7:15 p.m. It was a lovely dry cool evening after the intense heat we had the previous days. Rahoon/Newcastle started very well and had two goals scored before Carnmore settled. Carnmore were playing into the Branskys End in the first half and found it difficult to find their range but they did not deserve to be 4 - 2 to 0 - 0 behind at half time. Whatever was said to the Carnmore lads at half time worked wonders!

Carnmore were hitting into the flats in the second half and seemed as if to be at home there ñ they were like a team transformed and urged on by good Carnmore/Claregalway support, they rallied back into the match. Carnmore scored 2 -1 without reply and were showing great promise. However Rahoon/Newcastle shoved upfield and scored two quick goals to kill the match. They ran out 6-3 to 2-1 winners.
From goalie Gerard Moran up to corner forward Tony Hession, the team showed great heart and determination. They hurled to the end even though they had quite a mountain to climb.

The team that lined out on the evening were as follows Gerry Moran, Keith McDonagh, Michael Shaughnessy, Cathal Long, Shane Fox, Rory Dillon, Edna Cooney, Eoin Feeney, Barry Hanley, Paraic Hanley, Kieran Murray, Richard Hession, Colm Dolan, Thomas Walsh, Tony Hession.
Substitutes that came on included Stephen McDonagh, Barry Caulfield, Seamus Costello, Jason Coyne, Brian McKiernan, Michael Fahy and David Greally.
Best of luck to this team in the forthcoming championship - see details of fixtures below.

UNDER 14
The worst April weather since records began did no favours for Carnmore under 14's as they made their exit from the Championship in three straight matches. By the time the weather improved we were out of contention for the play-offís. Of course we cannot blame the weather for all our troubles, the ground was just as soft for the other teams. We had some very good teams in our group. Killimor, the eventual ìAî winners, and St. Thomasís, the runners up, proved much too strong. We were nearly as good as Meelick Eyrecourt but couldnít score. Our final group match was at home in Carnmore against Sarsfields. The pitch was lovely, similar to Croke Park on All-Ireland Final day - a credit to everybody involved in it's redevelopment. We beat Sarsfields 0-6 to 1-1. The Under 14 championship for 1998 was over.

UNDER 16
Carnmore's Under 16 Championship starts on 6th July, so it's just around the corner. We're grouped with Beagh, Ballinderrin, Kilconieron and Ahascragh so it's the best of luck to Declan Walsh and his young brigade. See all the fixtures below.

CARNMORE HURLING CLUB

The past month saw the senior team make their debut in this years Championship and progress exceptionally well in this competition. They have accomplished 5 points from a possible 6 which is a remarkable achievement, but one that was expected.

Carnmore v's Ballinderreen
This contest took place in Kenny Park, Athenry. The lads started the game a little shaky and there were a lot of anxious moments in the first half for both players and spectators as well as the management team. We found ourselves trailing at half time on a score of Carnmore 1-6 Ballinerrreen 3-4.
However, when the second half commenced the lads lifted their game, a goal scored for us within minutes of the interval was the incentive for Carnmore to take the game to Ballinderreen - which they did. They played with plenty of passion, contributing to an excellent second half of competitive and end-to-end hurling and when the final whistle was blown by referee M. Bodkin the scoreline loked much better for the men from Carnmore. Carnmore 3-15 Ballinderreen 3-12.

Carnmore v's Ardrahan
Again, this Championship clash took place in Kenny Park, Athenry. It was a very important game and the team were looking for a further 2 points.
This was a very close and tough encounter, both teams playing some good hurling. The lads again went in at half time 3 points in arrears butcame out with guns firing. They played tirelessly and with great effect and this saw Ardrahan's lead diminish. The finals score wass Carnmore 1-13 Ardrahan
0-12

Carnmore v's Abbey Duniry
Kenny Park was again hosting this vital encounter. Carnmore were looking again for 2 points as this would ensure their place in the quarter finals.
Carnmore set the pace right from the first whistle, the whole team from the goalie to the full forward line played exceptionally well in the first half and went in at the interval leading by 4 points. Supporters wereoptimistic and a little more relaxed at the break than they had been in the previous two games and were looking forward to the second half.
The lads recommenced the game with the same spirit and skill they had shown in the first half. They seemed to have things all sewn up when Abbey Duniry slowly but surely clawed their way back into the game. A powerful free taken by Kevin Devine, Abbey's goalie was blasted into the net. Supporters were on the edge of their seats again when Abbey went two points ahead but the lads showed the commitment and spirit they have as they pulled back the deficit and finished the game with a draw. Carnmore O-14 Abbey Duniry 2-8

They now have 5 points from a possible 6 and are well on their way to the Quarter Finals. Their next game will be Portumna in Ballinasloe. Best of luck to the team and mentors.

JUNIOR A
Unfortunately, the Junior A's have not had the opportunity to start their champaign in the Championship as a result of fixtures being canceled or called off. However, they are due to play on Sunday, 7the June against Sylane also in Ballinasloe. Remember to go and support the lads!!

LOTTO
