THE GARDEN
Looking back at the month of April, you would be forgiven for asking what
season we were in, such was the weather. The wet, cold and frosty weather
prevented a lot of planting and sowing. May is the month when the temperatures
rise and the day length increases. There is usually a major burst of growth
during this month and it is well to be prepared for this. May can also
be a relatively dry month and this dry weather can be combined with late
frosts, so be warned! Take care planting out the summer bedding plants
from frost and don't let anything dry out in a dry spell.
Now that
the grass is growing, it is important to cut it at least once a week or
10 days. You can still put your 3:1 lawn weed and feed out on the lawn.
For those that have compost heaps and want to keep them as organic as
possible, don't put the grass clippings on the compost heap until the
lawn has been cut at least three times; after carrying out any treatment
of hormonal weedkillers on the lawn.
You can give evergreen hedges their first clip of the season now. Slope
the sides so that the top is narrower than the base. This will allow light
to get to the lower branches and then the hedge will have leaves almost
to the ground. Before you start, check that there are no birds nesting
in the hedge. If there are, delay cutting until the young have flown.
In the vegetable garden, mould the soil up around the shoots of the potatoes. This will help kill any germinating seed seeds, improve the weight of the crop and they will be easier to lift at harvesting time. If there is a chance of frost, cover the young growth completely to protect it from the cold. Weed growth also picks up momentum in this month, so keep them in check with the hoe. You can also use a pre-emergence herbicide for weeds with crops such as potatoes, carrotts, parsnips and parsley. This is a good month for sowing seeds of vegetables, including parsley which likes high soil temperatures to germinate.
Apple trees will need spraying for apple scab disease if they are not resistant varieties. Pear trees are usually free from scab disease. You can control scab by spraying with any systemic fungicide. Check currant bushes, raspberries, strawberries for greenfly, as apart from the damage they do, they also carry viruses. An organic way of getting rid of greenfly is to use washing up liquid with tepid water, spraying the top and underside of the foliage. Gooseberries will be the first fruit of the season. Pick the fruits while they are young before they become full of seeds.
The bedding
plants for the summer are coming on stream. Because the way the weather
has been, it's probably best to be a little cautious. Another few days
of mild weather going into mid May, will probably see the fear of frost
through. All the usual varieties are available and this year there are
lots of varieties of the increasingly popular Surtinia Petunias.
How to plant up a hanging basket in four simple steps:
1. Place the basket on a bucket which will help keep it steady. With moss
or a bought liner, line the basket packing moss firmly in place. It's
easier to use if you moisten it lightly.
2. Use a multi-purpose compost to fill the basket, gently firming it down,
but not packing it. A lot of people add Swellgel or Basket mate which
turns into a gel and helps retain moisture, not drying out as easily.
3. Remove well watered plants from their pots. Plant the centre working
outwards, firming the plants in place as you go.
4. Water the basket evenly and hang in a greenhouse or light and sheltered
place for about two weeks so that the plants can establish.
There are two tips for this month. Firstly, if you get your chimney cleaned, hang on to the soot for your vegetable garden. It contains some nitrogen fertiliser and other minerals, especially sulphur. Both are necessary in the production of healthy green growth. Traditionally soot was applied to the ground to be used for onions. A domestic chimney can produce a few kgs of soot and will be enough to apply to about ten square metres. Onions benefit from nitrogen and sulphur directly, but they also benefit from increased soil temperatures. Being black in colour, soot radiates back less of the sunshine that falls on the soil surface. A raising of temperature of a couple of degrees is possible and this aids onion development. While soot has been used with onions, it can be used for other vegetables also. It would benefit leafy vegetables such as cabbage, lettuce and spinach, plants that effectively use nitrogen.
Secondly, keep all forms of styrofoam packaging material, for example Hifi, T.V. and fast food boxes, for breaking up to mix into compost or to place in pots before filling them with compost. The styrofoam opens up the compost to allow air into the roots and provides very good drainage.
Lastly, the
questions I have been asked recently which are fairly common. Here are
the answers.
Q. If I paint the timber products in my garden (railway sleepers, log
rolls, trellis, etc) with cresote, will it cause damage to the plants?
A. Yes, the fumes of it can harm plants, so use some form of wood stain
thats harmless to plants.
Q. I have
access to a lot of mushroom compost to use around the plants in my garden,
is it safe to use?
A. If you are going to use it as a mulch, it is best allowed to rot down
outdoors where its relatively high salts content will be leached out.
Established hedges are unlikely to be adversely affected however.

Blending
Essential Oils: As all essential oils are potentially hazardous if used
incorrectly, it is important to dilute them before use. Essential oils
must never be applied directly to the skin, with the exceptions of Lavender
and Tea Tree.
Always remember that essential oils are powerful natural substances and
only small amounts are required. As a general rule, proportions should
never exceed 2 ½ % and that for most applications this amount may
be decreased. It is always best to use the lowest proportions possible.
Essential Oil - to 10 mls of carrier oil the maximum amount of drops of
essential oil = 5 drops. Proportions should be reduced according to your
physical size and general condition, for example, a frail elderly person
will require less than a strong physically fit person. Also, note that
mood and general condition can greatly affect the way essential oils will
influence a person.
For small children, blending proportions must not exceed 1%, babies require
even smaller dosage, no more than ½ %. Always use extreme caution.

The young basketball players of the parish, organised by coach Maura Harte, ran an extremely successful basketball marathon on Sunday, l9th April. This venture realized substantial funds which will be put to very good use in the ongoing development of the Centre. Our thanks to Maura and to Pauline Murphy, Sinead Greally and everyone else who helped out on the day. Most of all a very special thank you to the children.
Many people came along to a Cookery Demonstration, which was given the Panel of Chefs Western Branch, in the Community Centre on Thursday 30th April. The Demonstration was preceded by a Cheese and Wine Reception and an enjoyable evening was had by all. Hopefully the Gourmet Delights were presented to appreciative families throughout the parish over the Bank Holiday weekend.
We are grateful
to the Chefs for presenting their Demonstration in Claregalway, and to
everyone else involved in the venture. All the people throughout the parish
who bought tickets, as well as those who attended on the night, Galway
Bay F.M. and The Tuam Herald for Media coverage , and to all who sponsored

HOW TO KNOW WHEN YOU ARE GETTING OLD ......
12th GALWAY (CLAREGALWAY) SCOUTING NEWS
The younger members of the association, the Beavers, had a very successful nature hike before Easter. The Gold Arrow group from Cubs are planning a Beaver/Cub day out for sometime in June. Beavers and Cubs from 5th. Corofin and 1st Galway, as well as Cubs from Oranmore joined our Beavers and Cubs for a puppet show at the Centre during a night off in the Drama Festival. 24 Cubs from Claregalway joined up with 74 Cubs from Oranmore, Craughwell and Corofin for an overnight in the Dr. Duggan Hall in Corofin on the 24th. April. There were games, a fashion show, a disco and very little sleep!! Many thanks to Hugh Farrell, who helped out, because of the unavailability of some leaders.
Oranmore hosted a hike on Saturday May 2nd. 22 Cubs and 3 Leaders from Claregalway took part. They walked from the Community Centre in Oranmore to Renvyle Park, answering questions along the route. At Renvyle, there was a barbecue followed by a soccer game and the day concluded with sweets for all.
Claregalway are planning a Cub Fun Day for Claregalway during May. We hope to have Cubs from the other 5 packs in the District for an afternoon of Fun and Games at the local Leisure Centre and G.A.A. grounds.
The Scouts had a night hike out from Galway, following a meal at Supermacs, before Easter and then overnighted in the Centre.
The newest section, the Ventures, are busy preparing for a summer trip to Austria.
A new training
programme for Leaders has been introduced by the association. The following
have completed Level 1 Gerry Mooney, Eileen Lynch, Jean Corrigan, Nora
Anne Maloney, Bernie Small, Mary McNulty, Colette Conneely and Patricia
Carton.
Level 2, First Aid, is planned for mid May and will be open to anyone
in the area wishing to take part. It will be an 8 week course on Tuesday
nights from 8:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Anyone interestd can give their names
to either Mary Duggan or Patricia Carton.

CLAREGALWAY/CARNMORE COMMUNITY ALERT
At a Meeting held on the 23rd April, the committee noted that progress on the installation of pendants had continued and to-date 40 units had been ordered and 16 had been installed. It was hoped that progress on the installation of further units would proceed quickly.
To-date, up to 80 pendants were required to cover the whole parish and that a number of forms had not yet been returned by townland co-ordinators. It was hoped that those who had outstanding forms would return them as soon as possible.
The committee wished to publicly asknowledge the contribution made by Mr. Fox who has the daunting task of installing the units and the committee would like ot hear from anyone else who is willing to help with the installations. Without further support, it will take some time to install all the units.
If people
have queries regarding community alert, they should contact their townland
co-ordinator or a member of the committee.

The past month has seen the Junior A team progress tremendously well in the ACC City Junior A Hurling League. Their first opponents were Clarenbridge and Carnmore won the game on a result of Carnmore 2-10, Clarenbridge 10 points. Next, they encountered Oranmore/Maree and won that game very convincingly. The match was played in Carnmore and the final result was: Carnmore 4-9 points, Oranmore/Maree 2-6 points. Ardrahan was their next challenge and it was a tough game. The lads paced them with great commitment and spirit and drew the game. The final score was Carnmore 3-9 points, Ardrahan 3-9 points. It has been a very encouraging start to the year by the Junior A's under the guidance of Bertie Linnane, assisted by Martin Sheridan and Sean Davoren.
The Senior
team make their debut in this years Championship during the weekend of
9/10th May. They have had a series of challenge games during April and
the lads are fit and ready to go!
We wish all the teams the best of luck in the various competitions.
Golf Weekend
The Club will be organising the "Carnmore Hurling Club Golf Classic
AM/AM". This event will take place in Tuam Golf Course on 3rd and
4th July. Teams will consist of 4 players, so get your teams together
now and mark those dates in your calendar. Further details will be published
in a later edition of Nuacht Chlár.
Lotto
The lotto is currently at a jackpot of £4,500 and will be held in
Egan's Bar on 3/5/98. Good luck to who who purchased tickets.
Finally,

Basketball
Marathon
On Sunday, the 19th of April a 12 hour Basketball Marathon took place
in aid of Claregalway Community Centre. Each member of the Club was issued
with a sponsorship card in advance, and quite a substantial sum was collected,
thanks to the generosity of the community. The marathon was a great success
and in total, 1,032 points were scored between the 70 people who took
part.
In appreciation for this great effort, the Community Centre Committee sponsored the drinks etc. for the end-of-the-season tournament, and everyone enjoyed plenty to eat and drink at the disco.
End of
Season Tournament
This Tournament was held on the 2nd of May to bring to a close the regular
basketball training until this coming September. The Tournament was a
mixed competition with an U13 and U16 division. The results, after many

Community Games
Congratulations to our U13 Girls Team who won the County Community Games
Final recently. They defeated the highly fancied Kinvara in an amazing
final which resulted in a score of 54 points to 14 in favour of Claregalway.
This superb achievement means that they go on to play in the Connacht
Finals on the 25th of July in Co. Leitrim. We wish them the very best

THE APOSTOLIC
SOCIETY
Apostolic Work was founded in this country in 1923 for the purpose of
helping the Missions by prayer and by material assistance. Up to 1962
efforts were concentrated mainly on keeping up Church supplies and vestments
because that was the kind of help missionaries needed most during that
period.
During the sixties, however, the emphasis changed and the association
was forced to undertake a reappraisal of its activities in the fast changing
era which followed Vatican II. Missionaries had been aware for a considerable
time of the need to employ more up-to-date methods in presenting the Word
of God. With the call from Vatican Ii "to harness the use of the
media", in evangelising the world, they turned to Apostolic Work
for financial aid for the training of missionary personnel to produce
religious and educational programmes on Radio and Television. Requests
for technical aids such as ape recorders, projectors, public address systems
and cathedetical material came pouring in from every mission country n
the world.
The Apostolic Workers continue to make vestments, alter cloths, children's
dresses, vests and cardigans as well as knitted jumpers and cardigans
for missionary priests and religious.
The Claregalway Branch of the Society started in December 1992 and the
members meet in the Sacristy on the second and fourth Tuesday of each
month at 8.00p.m.We would be happy to get more members so you are welcome
to come along and help in this missionary work
We hold a cake sale and display of work each year in October. We thank
you all for donating cakes, supporting the raffle and giving donations
for the Mission. We also hold a Church Gate Collection on the same day,
but this year, and the following years, we are holding our Church Gate
Collection on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th July. These are our only means
of fund-raising and we look forward to your support.
We are deeply grateful to our Honorary Members who pay £2.00 per
year and pray for the missions.

Comortas Peil na Gaeltachta
Baile an Chláir 2-9 Ml.Breathnach 1-8
A great second half revival to overcome a half-time deficit of 1-6 to 0-1 marked our exciting win over Ml.Breathnach in the final of Comortas Peil na Gaeltachta at Inverin. We won by 2-9 to 1-8 and now go on to represent Gaeltacht Co. na Gaillimhe in the All-Ireland series in Donegal on May 30th to June 1st next. Earlier, we beat Moycullen by 1-13 to 1-6 and Barna by 1-19 to 1-6.
Inspired mainly by Donal O Curraoin, Ml.Breathnach dominated the first half in which we played poorly, without much purpose or pattern. In the second half, however, we got our act together and team work gradually asserted itself. The introduction of subs Patrick Stephens and Paul Concannon together with the switch of Padraig Walsh outfield and great displays by Anthony Monaghan, Padraig O'Connell and Adrian Moran turned the game in our favour. Points by Adrian Moran (2) and Niall McGovern started the revival and when Derek Murray was fouled in the square, Paul Concannon converted the penalty. Our second goal came from Derek Murray when he pounced on a ball behind the full back line and he took the chance to shoot low to the left corner of the net. Points by Damien Fahy from a pass by Adrian Moran and another by the latter after a fine mid field catch by Padraig Walsh booked us our tickets for Donegal.

Two late
goals by David Walsh including a penalty earned us a well merited draw
in this entertaining league game played at The Prairie on Tuesday May
5 last. Both sides were short a few regulars, Paul Francis had to retire
injured early on, and the conditions were very wet. It was a spirited
performance and a very unusual series of crossbar and upright rebounds
in the first half denied Claregalway a clear lead at half time.

Féile Peil na nÓg
No luck for Claregalway this year in the Féile which was played at the Leisure Centre on Saturday May 2. Corofin won the Group 2 series in a very competitive group that also included Annaghdown. This Group series was due to be played at Corofin but there was a late switch of venue to the Leisure Centre. Special thanks are due to Peter Greally for mowing and rolling the pitch at very short notice.
