Claregalway Parish History
The Claregalway
- Parish History 750 years book was officially launched by Gearóid
O'Tuathaigh, Professor of History at NUI, Galway in Kynes Tavern on Friday,
November 19th.
It was a celebratory occasion for those who helped with the publication
and a great night for the parish. People were eager to view this long
awaited book. There was a warm atmosphere with everybody enjoying themselves.
Stories and memories were exchanged no doubt prompted by the photographs
and articles in the book.
Tom Lenihan, chairman of the society, acted as Master of Ceremonies for
the night and welcomed the huge crowd that came to support it. He paid
tribute to the many people who helped to make the publication possible.
Special thanks were given to FAS who financed the initial research and
to Jarlath McDonagh who provided support and encouragement in the early
days. Professor O'Tuathaigh praised the people of Claregalway for the
excellent publication. He said that Claregalway had a proud history, which
is excellently documented.
The book has since got very favourable reviews. Tony Galvin from the Tuam
Herald referred to the 'incredible feat of research, co-operation and
local pride that went into the mammoth task of producing it.'
The book covers about 750 years of parish history, beginning around the
year 1250 with the foundation of the Franciscan Friary. It is a rich compilation
of information, stories and perspectives on the lives and times of Claregalway
and its people down through the centuries. From placenames to politics,
superstitions to sport, religion to recreations, landscape to local lore,
the reader, whatever his or her interests, will find much that is informative
and entertaining in this volume.
The book is in hardback and has 277 pages of interesting details with
120 photographs and illustrations. Buy now while stocks last. Consider
it a perfect Christmas gift especially for friends or relations living
abroad.
It is available for sale in local shops or from any of the committee members:

This is indeed a book every household should have. I found myself deeply engrossed in whatever chapter I happen to open. It is a book one can take up at any stage and feel drawn to its contents. Local history is fascinating and even though I am not originally from the locality, I feel proud to live here in Claregalway and to be steeped in such history. Congratulations to Claregalway Historical and Cultural Society on such a fine publication.
P.S.
The chapter on page 249 re Parish Newsletter - John Geraghty informed
me that as well as the names mentioned in the initial start up of the
newsletter that David Cormican, John O'Hagan and Marie Lohan were key
figures. A lot of work was carried out in David Cormican's house and credit
to the entire team for this initiative without which the newsletter would
not exist.

Congratulations to Christine Keaney, Lakeview, on winning Galway Federation section of the National Healthy Competition sponsored by the Health Promotion Unit, Department of Health & Children and also by An Bord Glas. Christine came second in the country for making a healthy recipe for under £4.00 and was presented recently in Dublin with a Waterford Crystal Glass and Candle Holder and Candle, designed by John Rocha. Christine entered her recipe through the I.C.A. (Irish Countrywomen's Association) in which she is actively involved.
Nationally, the I.C.A. donated in excess of £130,000 towards the new M.I.B.B. (Minimally Invasive Breast Biopsy Service) which was launched recently, a fact which many people might not be aware of. The MIBB cost £250,000. This service will dramatically reduce the trauma for women patients who have to have further tests because suspect changes have been found in breast tissue. It will mean less invasive surgery for removal of tissue and the new equipment will mean that a biopsy can be done under local anaesthetic and a woman can return home within hours, rather than spending a day or two in hospital.
Credit is
due to organisations such as the I.C.A. for involvement in worthy causes.
The I.C.A. is very active throughout Ireland and people have learned a
wide range of skills and the social interaction is of great importance
Christine learned to play bridge through the I..C.A. and enjoys the game
immensely. In fact, since joining the I.C.A. she tells me she has not
enough hours to fill her days!!!

Badminton has continued on Tuesday mornings in the Leisure Centre Claregalway.. There are a small group of ladies who enjoy a couple of hours of good exercise and lots of fun on a weekly basis.
Some weeks ago, nine members of this Club were entertained to a week-end in Dublin, where they were hosted by their friends from the Artane Badminton Club, in North Dublin. These ladies had visited Claregalway in May of his year, and a great time was had by all, so the return trip was eagerly anticipated.
The group were collected at Heuston Station on Saturday 16th November and ferried to Baldoyle - the Headquarters of the Badminton Union of Ireland, where everyone was served 'light refreshments' and then a few hours of very 'competitive' badminton commenced. Everyone retired to their respective host accommodation for a couple of hours relaxation, before meeting up again for a lovely meal, and a night of chat and crack..
Sunday Morning
was a relaxed affair, with everyone doing their own thing. One lucky lady
had been to visit a factory warehouse and picked up a nice bargain for
herself (nothing like a bit of style to top off a good weekend). The whole
group joined forces once more in Baldoyle in the afternoon for some more
Badminton, and a final cup of tea - and maybe something a little stronger
- before heading for Heuston Station. Everyone agreed that it was a very
welcome break and a lovely opportunity to get together with people who
have become friends through Sport. In fact it is through the Junior Badminton
Club in Claregalway, who have both visited and hosted children from Dublin,
that this relationship was established. Long may it continue.
New members are always welcomed to Badminton on Tuesdays, from 9.30 p.m.
- 11.30 p.m.

The Season
of the beauty panic is fast approaching, so here are some helpful hints
to help you through the festive Season.
Choose the season's look that suits your colouring best, for example -
Red lipsticks are blue-based (cool) or orange based (warm) and it is important
to pick one that suits your skin tone. Wake up your skin by attending
a Beauty Clinic to have a good facial, transform your self by having an

ST. JOSEPH'S YOUNG PRIEST'S SOCIETY
This is a Society of lay people founded by a Galway woman Mrs. Olivia Taafe in 1895. The Society fosters vocations to the priesthood and religious life by prayer and helps financially in the education of students for the priesthood.
As you know by now, we have a branch in the Parish for the past two years. We meet on the second Friday of each month at 8 p.m. in the S.M.A. house. We usually have an attendance of 12 members.
In March, four from the branch visited Maynooth College and met the clerical students from the diocese who showed them around the College. They had a very enjoyable day there, and they were very well entertained. They travelled by bus with members of the other branches in the diocese, accompanied by Fr. Vivien Loughrey, St. Mary's College and other priests.
On June 12th the Diocesan Committee organised a trip to Ballintubber Abbey as part of the Millennium celebration. A group from Claregalway and Carnmore represented our Branch. They visited the Foxford Mills and the visitor centre there. They had lunch in Foxford and continued their journey to Ballintubber Abbey. Fr. Fahey, who gave them the history of the Abbey, met them. After that, they had Mass in the Abbey, celebrated by Fr. Vivien Loughrey who accompanied them on the trip. After Mass, they went to the Celtic Furrow. This was a very interesting trip. The guides took them back to early Christianity and gave them a great insight into ancient times. Everyone enjoyed the stories and they reminded them of stories told to them by their parents.
There is an annual retreat held in Esker in September that eleven members attended. On November 17th several of our members attended a special mass in St. Mary's College which was concelebrated by his Lordship Bishop James McLoughlin and the four newly ordained priests from the diocese. After Mass we were served a light meal and met the Bishop and the young priests.
The task of fostering religious vocations devolves on the entire Christian Community. Taking part in the work of the Society is one way in which lay people can respond to the task. The look to the future and to their children's future. They want to hand on their faith and their love of the Mass for which priests will be needed. You can help the Society by coming along to the meetings.
The members
of the Branch are very grateful to all the people who helped them during
the year by paying an annual subscription and by praying for the spread
of vocations. They are also very grateful to the S.M.A. Fathers who give
them a room for their meetings and help them in every way.
Last but not least, many thanks to our Spiritual Director Very Rev. Noel
Mullin P.P. who attends all our meetings and encourages us in our work.
Claregalway
and Turloughmore Medical Centres
APPOINTMENT SYSTEM
From January 1st 2000 an appointment system will be introduced for the afternoon and evening surgeries at our Turloughmore and Claregalway medical centres. The morning surgeries at Turloughmore will continue to operate on a walk in basis (first come, first served).
This partial appointment system is designed to provide a more comfortable and efficient service for our patients. We anticipate that it will result in less crowding, and a significant reduction in the time that patients spend in the waiting room prior to being seen.
The appointment system will be administered by our secretarial staff and will be managed by Orla, our practice manager. Doctors will not generally be involved in the making of appointments. Appointments can be made by telephone or in person.
A standard ten-minute appointment will be offered to each patient. Longer consultations will be facilitated when necessary - an increased fee will be charged in these instances.
Patients who attend in the afternoon and evenings without an appointment will be seen if and when a time is available, or when the problem is considered to be urgent. Patients with non-urgent problems who do not have an appointment may be asked to accept an appointment with whatever doctor is available, or to return at another time, to see the doctor of their choice.
Occasionally one of the doctors will be required to leave the surgery to attend to an urgent housecall, or to attend to a seriously ill patient in the surgery. If this happens the ill patient will be given priority and as a result the appointment system may not always run exactly on schedule. We ask for your understanding and co-operation when this occurs.
No appointment is necessary for the issue of repeat certs/prescriptions where a consultation with the doctor is not required. All requests for certs/prescriptions will be dealt with on a same day basis.
TO MAKE
AN APPOINTMENT PLEASE PHONE
091-797106/797187
(BETWEEN 9AM-5PM.)
It is our policy to offer patients a choice of doctor whenever possible
and to facilitate patient needs with regard to appointment times. If a
patient has to cancel an appointment, early notice of cancellation, either
by phone or in person, would be much appreciated.
The club
ran a 12- hour basketball marathon on 21st November last. This year's
event proved to be a great success. We had great support from the children
who had no trouble organising themselves into teams and making sure that
the marathon kept going through the day. Also during the day a game was
organised between Claregalway U19 and Moycullen U19. This proved to be
quite competitive and Moycullen won only by the narrowest of margins with
Claregalway putting up a great display of basketball. Our thanks to Moycullen
club for going along with our rules for the marathon and also for their
kind donation to the marathon fund. The club would also like to thank
Jimmy Roche of ROCO and Daly Frozen Foods for their generous donations,
it is greatly appreciated. Thank you to all parents for their co-operation
with the marathon day and especially all those who sponsored the children.
Finally we would like to thank Ann Moran who provided sandwiches and cakes throughout the day to keep us all going. Would all those who have sponsorship cards please return them to their coaches at the next training session.
Our U11 girls team had a trip to Maree/Oranmore for their game of the season. They played two games and Claregalway succeeded in winning both games. Our U13 boys also played their first game of the season against Maree/Oranmore in the Claregalway Centre. Maree proved to be the better team on the team but the Claregalway lads showed great spirit.
Training will continue until the 18th December and will re-commence on Wednesday 5th January 2000.
Sarah Mooney, P.R.O.
I would like to take this opportunity to compliment Maura Harte for initially starting up the Basketball Club in Claregalway. It has gone from strength to strength and talking to Maura recently she told me that they have a coach for every age group, which is a great achievement. Congratulations to all the coaches and everybody involved in the Club. I know the children of Claregalway enjoy it and the regular turnout is an indication of this.
Josette.
Our u14 team
finished the playing year in style by winning the City League. This gives
us a double for 1999,with the u10's already victorious.
After a long year (those girls started training 1st Feb. for County Competitions)
the girls qualified
For the semi-final with victories over Abbeyknockmoy,Salthill,Moycullen, and
Cois Fhairrige.
The semi-final was a real Derby affair between ourselves and Oranmore-Maree.
The match
Was played in Westside, and Carnmore came out on top after some anxious
moments towards
the end.
In the final we were up against Castlegar. The game was played in Moycullen
,and a good Crowd
Travelled to support the team. In an even enough 1st half we got on top
just before the break,and
At half time led by 2-0 to 0-1.
In the 2nd half we went further ahead before Castlegar battled back, but
our girls were equal To the challenge, and the match finished on a scoreline
of Carnmore 3-2,Castlegar 2-1.
The sound of the fulltime whistle was greeted with delight by the team and supporters.
The team
were given a tremendous welcome home, with bonfires blazing along the
route,before
Arriving at the Carnmore Centre where the team and supporters enjoyed
some Tasty refreshments.
This was
a well deserved victory by a fairly dedicated group of girls, who have
put in a lot of effort and
At last have been rewarded. Our congratulations to the entire panel, and
their trainer Packie Fox .
This was a 12 a-side competition, and for the record the team was; Hannah
Coen, Caroline Fox, Suzanne O'Connell, Alva Mchugh, Jean Talbot, Deirdre

The U-14 Panel have just finished off their season with the Parish League. It was a long year having played their first game in January. The Team got to the County semi-final before losing out narrowly to the eventual winners. Much credit is due to the players for the manner in which they represented the parish. They did themselves, their families and the Club proud and without doubt they will bring silverware to the Carnmore Club in the near future. Many thanks to the parents, sponsors, and supporters throughout the year.

THE GARDEN
Christmas is well and truly upon us and we can look back and review the
year that has gone, from a gardening perspective.
From a positive point of view, many would see it as a good year, particularly people who are starting off and getting the garden off the ground. The more experienced gardeners will view it as a disappointing year with harsh weather in Spring for bulbs/shrubs etc., a very wet Summer which was detriment to the summer bedding plants and then an extremely wet and windy Autumn. However, with Christmas approaching, we can turn our thoughts and plans to the new year and enjoy our Christmas with friends and family.
The lawn needs very little care at this time of the year and only cut it, (raise the mower) if the ground is firm. Leaves should be cleared from the lawn as they smother it, and can be placed on a compost heap. It makes a great compost when broken down. Your vegetable garden can also be tidied up. Remove all the old debris and dump it or place it on the compost heap. The cleared area can be dug over or rotovated and any kind of organic material dug or rotovated in. Ideal material would be seaweed "dung", material from your compost heap and mushroom compost. Mushroom compost contains a high degree of lime which is ideal for Brassica's but not ideal for root crops so beware.
A lot of people are still planting bulbs because November was so wet, but will still grow but may be late for flowering. All the Winter bedding plants can still be planted, winter pansys, polyanthus, wallflowers etc. all of which add some colour on a drab day. Roses and fruit trees can also be planned now and most garden centres would have a good stock of them at the moment. Also Bareroot trees, Conifers and Hedging are done at this time of year, between now and March and they are usually cheaper than any of the potted varieties, so save and get planting.
A common
question at this time of the year is "What do I do with my roses
at this time of the year"? Well, basically it is very simple. Roses
as a rule, other than climbing varieties, can be cut back by approximately
a third now.
Some varieties can be quite tall and with all the wind they rock over
and back, water lodges in the hole at the base and if you get frost, it
can damage the plants. To prevent this happening, cut the roses back by
a third and do not be fussy where you cut them. The main pruning and feeding
is done in March, around St. Patrick's weekend and I will detail that
in due course.
Christmas is not Christmas without a Christmas Tree and nowadays there is a huge variety to choose from. The most popular nowadays is the noble fir. This is a beautiful full green/blue non-shed conifer with a beautiful scent. These trees are specifically grown by growers for Christmas. The next is the lodge pole pine or scots pine. This is another non-shed light green tree. The third tree is the old traditional Norway spruce, not as popular nowadays, as it sheds so many needles. Lastly, there is the artificial tree, of which there are some very realistic types, but like Coca Cola, you can't beat the real thing!
For the "Love of your life", who is gardening mad, you never know what to them? Do I get a plant, tools or a Book. Well, there is a huge range to choose from, pottery, plants, tools, books etc. Perhaps the answer is a gift voucher from our garden centre and let your "Loved One", choose for her/himself.
A lot of people are asking what is actually in flower as a tree or shrub at this time of year to give as presents. Four that spring to mind are Hammamelis mollis (Witch Hazel), Viburnum Tinus, Viburnum Bodnatense Dawn, Mahonia etc.
During the festive season, a lot of people will receive pot plants as gifts and do not know how to take care of them. I will name a few and outline how to look after them.
1. Poinsettias
- They like average warmth, with lots of light, water
thoroughly but wait until the compost is moderately dry before
watering again. If the room is very humid, mist the leaves
occasionally.
2. Solanums - The Christmas Cherry likes a cooler room temperature
lots of light and keep the compost moist at all times. Mist occasionally.
3. Cyclamens - They like a cool room temperature, lots of light
and keep
moist at all times, using soft water (rain water) semi tepid (lukewarm).
Put pebbles on the tray or saucer if possible.
4. Christmas Cactus - They like an average room temperature, well
lit
spot, no sunlight, water liberally when the compost begins to dry out.
5. Chrysanthemum - Bright light is essential, but shade from the
mid-day
sun. Keep the compost moist at all times. A cool 50 - 60 °F.
temperature is ideal. After flowering most plants are discarded, but
pot chrysanthemums can be planted out in the garden where, if they
survive, they will revert to their natural growth habit.
Lastly, Glynn's Garden and Fruit and Vegetable Centre is open every day to Christmas Eve for all your fruit and vegetable needs, plants, Christmas Trees, holly wreaths, holly, fresh flowers, pot plants, fruit baskets, gift vouchers, pottery, ceramic pots, lights, Christmas Decorations. We look forward to helping you.
On behalf of all at Glynns, we thank you for your custom and wish you a Happy Christmas and Peaceful New Year.
