PADRAIG PEARSES GAA CLUB NOTES

Roscommon U21 Hurling Championship

6/11/2005

 Padraig Pearses: 1-11 Oran –10

Pearses won the opening game of this years U21 championship in what was a riveting encounter at Athleague on Sunday. Both teams made light of the underfoot conditions to serve up a highly entertaining game of hurling. Pearses manager Tom Costello handed U21 debuts to several players and they delivered in style with a remarkable show of passion and skill to see off an Oran side who never gave in. Pearses drew first blood with a pointed free from Tomás Seale but Oran levelled quickly. Seale edged Pearses in front again but as the half progressed Oran began to take control with the support of a stiff breeze and by half time they led by four points, seven to three. Indeed Oran found the Pearses backs in a less than charitable mood and only for some lapses in discipline the sides may have been closer at half time. One must also note Enda Colleran’s fantastic save that kept Pearses in it at a point of great Oran pressure. Pearses started the second half like a storm. David Loughnane came into the game at centre back to compliment the efforts of John Mulvihill on the wing who was superb in the first half. Pearses notched some fine early scores from Seale through frees and open play to cut the deficit. The younger members of the team took to the challenge with remarkable maturity. Robert Barrett proved resolute at corner back as did Jimmy Donoghue and Robert Aherne came to the fore at centre field with a sterling display. Adrian Burns was also in fine form on the wing. Aherne indeed revelled in the tough exchanges, as did Cathal Kelly who worked tirelessly in a game that was tight and tense. Emmett Kelly provided a courageous display at wing forward, moving ball quickly and working well, hooking and blocking. Pearses took control and with Seale in fine scoring form the game started to drift away from Oran. Having come within a point of Oran, a loose ball around the square was buried by Tom Kelly and Pearses surged into the lead. Patrick Egan and Damian Whelan were contesting everything in the half forward line and when Seale landed one from the touchline one felt it could be Pearses’ day. Yet Oran were not to be shrugged off and when Seale missed a free a flurry of points from Oran levelled the match. With the game on a knife edge, David Sweeney’s surge through the centre was halted illegally and Seale held his nerve to point the free with minutes to go. It proved to be the breaking of Oran with Seale pointing again as well as huge scores from out the field by Alan Sweeney, a free, and Cathal Kelly. The key to this success was heart and determination and despite the small pick of players on the day a mix of youth and experience saw Pearses claim a fine victory. Full credit to Oran who never looked beaten yet one must give compliment Tom Costello’s young charges who showed grit far beyond their years and kept driving forward until the final whistle.

Squad: Enda Colleran, Robert Barrett, Alan Sweeney, Jimmy Donoghue, Adrian Burns, David Loughnane, John Mulvihill, Robert Aherne, Cathal Kelly, Damian Whelan, Patrick Egan, Emmett Kelly, David Sweeney, Tomás Seale, Tom Kelly, Tomás Sweeney

Padraig Pearses -8 Four Roads -12

Padraig Pearses' bid for a fourth successive Junior Hurling Championship came to a dramatic end at the final hurdle on Sunday at Athleague. Four Roads finally broke the Woodmount men's resolve in what was a fascinating affair. With the rain holding off the crowd were treated to a cracking first half with the sides going point for point. Pearses managed to edge in front at the break as their full forward line was causing any number of problems for Four Roads. Padraig Dooley was in fine form scoring two points and he was ably assisted in the scoring by Tomás Seale who popped over a point and Brian Burns who had three to his credit going in at the break. It could have been a lot worse for Four Roads had their goalkeeper not pulled off two fine saves although Seale probably should have finished the chance that was presented to him on a plate by Dooley.  Pearses' half back line was motoring well and even though Four Roads came back to lead early in the second half one felt Pearses' experience should see them through but things changed drastically in the final quarter. Pearses lost Captain Christy Sweeney to injury who was soon accompanied by Paul Flynn with a similar problem. To add to this tempers began to fray, with a few minor scuffles erupting and it was Pearses who came off worse. Shane Berrigan saw red after a retaliation. With Pearses losing their shape and their heads Four Roads showed great composure opeing up a four point lead which they never relinquished. Pearses fought gamely but were finding it very difficult against a fine Four Roads team. Pearses refused to give up but despite a few nervous moments Four Roads held off the challenge to lift the cup. Full credit to Padriag Loughnane, John Donoghue and Padriag Dooley who put in a huge effort with the squad considering these players were without hurling since the exit from the Senior Championship. The players themselves probably provided the best hurling of the championship in spots and were unlucky in the final.
Squad: Enda Colleran, Aidan Doorley, Sean Donoghue, Niall Flynn,Shane Berrigan, Kevin Flynn, Kenneth Glynn, John Galvin, Christy Sweeney, Brian Burns, Kieran Doyle, Paul Flynn, David Loughnane, Tomás Seale, Padraig Dooley.Jimmy Donoghue, Mike Flynn, Padraig Galvin, John Mulvihill, David Sweeney, Declan Galvin, Liam Dolan, Damian Whelan, Michael Hogarty,

County Junior Hurling Final: Padraig Pearses V’s Four Roads

Padraig Pearses are aiming to win their fourth county Junior Hurling Final in succession when they take on Four Roads on Sunday 23rd October at 3pm in Athleague. It would be a historic achievement for the Woodmount club, who have dominated the competition for the past three years. Indeed the Pearses men have blazed a trail to this year’s final as well amassing thirteen goals and sixty points on a run that included victories over Sunday’s opponents Four Roads, Athleague\Tremane and St. Dominics twice. Oran defeated them comfortably in Rockfield but a rattled Pearses side recovered to dispatch St. Dominics in the semi-final. Padraig Pearses and Four Roads are no strangers to each other in this competition having contested a fine game in Four Roads earlier in the year. Probably more significant was the meeting of the two sides in the decider two seasons ago when after a pulsating draw Pearses captured the second of their three in a row at the second attempt on a windswept afternoon in Athleague. Four Roads will hope to vanquish those demons and there are survivors on both sides from that affair. Pearses will once again call on the experience of the likes of Sean Donoghue, Christy Sweeney, Padraig Dooley and Tomás Seale to name but a few of those who have been on all three squads. Sweeney indeed has already done it all having captained, and managed a team to the title as well as capturing the man of the match accolade in last years decider. Once again Pearses have a strong squad but will be wary of the threat of Four Roads who have plenty of senior panellists of their own. It promises to be an intriguing encounter with plenty of fire and skill. History itself notes that there have been few bad games between the sides in recent memory.

Ladies Football,

Pearses Minor Ladies were beaten by Ballinameen in the first round of the minor championship on Sunday last in Ballinameen. This was the first game this team has played this year and it took a while for them to settle down. Pearses lined out without a number of regulars due to work commitments but hope these players will be available for the next match. All of the players played well on Sunday and showed they have huge potential. Outstanding for Pearses were Deirdre Sweeney and captain Carmel Killeen. The final score was Ballinameen 6 - 5 Pearses 3 - 4. Pearses will play St Bridgets in the next round.

Team: Deirdre Corbett, Ashling Curley, Katie Moran, Linda O’ Brien, Emma Ryan, Carmel Killeen, Lisa Mannion, Christina Dolan, Tara McDonnell, Deirdre Sweeney, Sinead Raftery, Lisa Killeen, Olivia Sweeney, Darina Flynn, Aoife McDonnell. Subs used: Aoife Raftery and Ciara Claffey.

Minor Training: Minor training continues on Wednesday at 7.30pm sharp. All players including players who played at U/16 level this year are encouraged to attend

Under 16 Football Championship Final

Padraig Pearses 0-8                                                                             Eire Og 1-7

The Hogarty Floorcovering sponsored Pearses Under 16 football team, lost out narrowly from adding the championships to their league title on Sunday last.

It was a long season for the Pearses lads and the team looked tired on the dat and started the game very slowly, trailing bu a goal at half time dispite playing with a strong wind.

All credit to the lads they battled hard in the second half and it was the pre-occupation with going for goals rather that taking their points that lost them the game in the end.

 Team:

David Burns, Michael Power, Alan Naughton, Jason Murray, Shane Mulvey, Alan Duffy, Cathal Dolphin, Niall Carty, Aidan Kenny, Emmett Kelly, Enna Ryan, Shane Naughton, John Landy, Jason Clogher, Brian Mulvey.

 Subs Used:

Niall Daly and Sean Ryan.

Ladies Football

Pearses Senior Ladies lost their senior championship title at a windswept
Johnstown on Sunday evening when they were well beaten by St Bridget’s on the
score line Pearses 0-4 St Bridget’s 1-6. Pearses lined out without regular
goalkeeper Aoife Dolphin who was ill with Eilish Finneran taking over the
number one slot at short notice. Pearses who were looking for a record 5
titles in a row found the going tough early on and went in at half time 3
points to 1 down. Pearses started strongly in the second half and had
levelled the match after 10 minutes of the second half. Just when Pearses
looked to have gained the upper hand for the first time in the match St
Bridgets struck for a crucial goal. Pearses were chasing the game after that
and failed to get the scores to close the gap although they had shots off
the crossbar and post. At the end of the day the better team won and Pearses
will have to regroup and make another bid next year.  We wish St Bridgets
best of luck next week when they take on the Galway champions in the
Connaught Championship. Many thanks to the Club for the refreshments afterwards.

Pearses mourn the death of former player Johnny Murray

It was with great sadness that the members and friends of Padraig Pearses learned of the death last Thursday morning of former stat footballer Johnny Murray. Johnny won his first championship medal for Pearses as an under 13 in 1967.  He went on to win at all underage grades before graduating to the senior team in the late seventies. Johnny was centre halfback on the Pearses team that won the O’ Rourke Cup Senior League in 1985.

Padraig Pearses 2-7                                                                             Elphin 0-12

The Paul Flynn sponsored Pearses Senior Football team qualified for their 1st Senior Championship since 1968 with a thrilling last gasp victory over Elphin in Hyde Park on Saturday evening last.

The game was played in terrible weather conditions but both teams served up entertaining football. Despite playing with a strong wind Pearses were one point behind at the half time interval but they increased the tempo significantly in the second half and the late late winner form Sean Fahy was a just reward for some excellent and determined football.

Pearses now meet hot favourites St Bridget’s next Sunday in the County Final.

Ladies Football,

Congratulations to the Roscommon Ladies team who were crowned All Ireland
Intermediate Champions last weekend. Well done to the Pearses players
involved and especially to Steffi Carty who was awarded player of the match.

PADRAIG PEARSES GAA CLUB NOTES

Junior Hurling Championship 19th July 2005:

Padraig Pearses: 2-17 St. Dominics –14

Padraig Pearses guaranteed their place in the county semi-final with a hard fought win over St. Dominics in Woodmount. The final score does little justice to the character showed by Dominics in what was a hugely entertaining game of hurling on a blustery evening. One point from a free indicates Pearses’ continued prowess from play in this championship and in truth the scoreline could have been much higher at the finish when one considers the wastefulness on both sides. Dominics started the brighter and found themselves ahead throughout the first half despite Pearses doing most of the hurling. Pearses were hurling well with Brian Burns and David Loughnane getting some top drawer scores in the second quarter of the game however St. Dominics kept their noses in front with some fine scores from their midfield. The second half was a different affair with Pearses starting at a gallop. Tomás Seale awakened at full forward to notch his first point and level the tie before Brian Burns gave Pearses the initiative with a fine point. Dominic’s were not so easily dismissed however and levelled the game again and after a further exchange of points they went in front again. Pearses however never panicked and after a moment of hesitation in the Dominic’s defence David Loughnane goaled and Pearses took control. Finding themselves in front Pearses never looked like relinquishing the lead. All the forwards got in on the act with the pick of the sores being long range efforts from John Galvin and Anthony Sweeney to complement a second David Loughnane goal and excellent scores from Padraig Dooley and Tomás Seale. The days scoring was finished with a sublime point from David Sweeney from a first time pull. Although Dominics tacked on a few frees they never looked capable of upsetting a Pearses side that was ruthless once it got into its stride. The backs proved solid once they settled to their task with Niall Flynn and Aidan Doorley impressing in the corners and Kenneth Glynn having a stormer at wing back. Christy Sweeney led by example in the middle of the pitch and was ably assisted by John Galvin while in the forwards Brian Burns got some sweet scores while David Loughnane was superb finishing with 2-3 to his credit. Pearses can now look forward to a semi-final date but despite this fine performance will find the retention of their title a lot more difficult than it may seem.

Team: Enda Colleran, Aidan Doorley, Sean Donoghue, Niall Flynn, Kenneth Glynn, Kevin Flynn, Darren Ryan, Christy Sweeney, John Galvin, Brian Burns, Anthony Sweeney, Shane Berrigan, Padraig Dooley, Tomás Seale, David Loughnane. Subs Used: Ross Darcy for Enda Colleran, David Sweeney for Darren Ryan

Junior Hurling Championship 5th July 2005: Padraig Pearses: 6-6 Athleague\Tremane 2-3

The scoreline reads much like what would be seen in an U-12 fixture but this was the final result in what was a strange game on a wet and windy Tuesday night in Woodmount. Pearses, clearly the better side from the outset had little difficulty finding the net when the chances arose but found points harder to come by. They shot seventeen wides, eight of these before they registered a score, which underlined their dominance from the outset. Just as in Four Roads a week earlier the forwards took a long time to settle and in truth never really got their act together except for flashes of class here and there. The first of these was David Loughnane’s point from forty-five metres after nearly a quarter of an hour and it seemed to spur the rest of the forwards into life. Tomás Seale, scored two fine goals out of loose balls in the full forward line to add to an earlier point and when Padraig Dooley and Brian Burns added to the tally Pearses were comfortably in front heading to the break despite an Athleague\Tremane goal late in the half. The game was effectively ended five minutes into the second half when Liam Dolan goaled and then Seale brought his tally for the day to 2-2 with a good point. The floodgates opened, Christy Sweeney’s sixty-five sailed all the way to the net before Paul Flynn goaled after collecting a Padraig Dooley cross. Despite Athleague\Tremane getting a goal and three points in the second half it was merely consolation, Anthony Sweeney’s daisy cutter creeped over the line and Padraig Dooley finished Pearses scoring for the day with a fine point. A good win by Pearses might also bring cause for concern over the wastefulness in front of goal that will surely be capitalised on by better opposition. Oran are next in line as Pearses keep their hopes of four in a row very much alive. The game is fixed for 12th of July at 7:30pm in Oran. Team: Enda Colleran, Aidan Doorley, Sean Donoghue, Niall Flynn, Kenneth Glynn, Kevin Flynn, John Mulvihill, Christy Sweeney (Capt.), Anthony Sweeney, Paul Flynn, David Loughnane, Brian Burns, Padraig Dooley, Tomás Seale, Shane Berrigan. Subs Used: Alan Glynn for Padraig Dooley, Mike Flynn for Paul Flynn, Kieran Sweeney for John Mulvihill, Liam Dolan for Kenneth Glynn, Cathal Duffy for David Loughnane

Best of luck to our senior hurlers who recommence the Senior Champioship against Roscommon Gaels on Sunday 10th of July at 3:15pm in Athleague.

Feile 2005

Padraig Pearses under 14 footballers had a brilliant victory in the All Ireland Feile Peil na Nog competition held in Limerick this July.

Pearses were hosted by Askeaten who looked after our players exceptionally well.

Pearses first game on Friday 01/07/2005 was against the host club Askeaten.

Pearses won this closely contested match in a score line of 4-8 to 2-4.

The Parade of all teams from the 32 counties took place that Friday evening in Limerick city.

On Saturday morning Pearses played St Sannan’s of Foynes in Limerick.  Pearses won this game on a score line of 4-10 to 0-6.

The last group game was played on Midday on Saturday.

Pearses defeated Greystones of Wicklow on a score line of 2-5 to 0-6.

This victory qualified Pearses for a Semi Final meeting with the Tipperary Champions Arravale Rovers.

This was a very exciting game with Pearses running out winners on a socre line of 5-7 to 1-2.

The stage was now set for the final, which was played in the Limerick Athletic Grounds at 12.30 on Saturday morning.

The opposition was a well-fancied Dura Barefield of Clare who defeated Westmeath Champions Mullingar in the Semi Final.

In the true Hallmark of great team Pearses reserved their very best Football for the Final.  This was a thrilling game with the sides level at 0-2 to 0-2 at the break.  The second half was keenly contested with both sides exchanging points until a Barefield goal seemed to snatch victory away from the Pearses lads but Pearses fought back bravely and when Captain Sean Ryan got on the end of a great move to crash the Ball to the Barefield net Pearses were back in front.

The final score line was Pearses 1-6 Barefield 1-4.

This was an overall brilliant performance by the Pearses players and full credit also to the Backroom Team, Managers – John Corbett, Pat Daly and Michael Feehily, The Support Team – Laurence Kelly, Donnie Egan and Ton O’ Malley.

A special thanks to our sponsors and the parents and supporters who travelled to Limerick with the Team.

Junior Hurling Championship 28th June 2005: Padraig Pearses: 2-15  Four Roads: -12

Padraig Pearses once again started a defence of the Junior Hurling championship with a victory over Four Roads. The teams benefited from the well-cut pitch in what was an entertaining evenings fare in Four Roads home pitch. Four Roads started the brighter going two points up after Pearses had missed early chances. Pearses seemed slow to settle and the game was point for point for much of the first half. For all the good scores Pearses got from Tomás Seale, Brian Burns and David Loughnane, they also missed a number of chances but they found themselves two points up at the break. With Four Roads getting the first score of the second half many of the spectators would have been forgiven for thinking it was going to be a close finish. However fine scores from Seale and Burns settled Pearses and when Cathal Duffy, showing great awareness in following up, scrambled the ball over the line for the first goal of the game ten minutes into the second half Pearses had taken control. They lifted their game in every sector of the pitch. The full back line with Aidan Doorley and Sean Donoghue leading by example began to exert more authority and wing backs Shane Berrigan and John Mulvihill started hurling great ball into the forwards. The midfield of Captain Christy Sweeney and John Galvin dominated proceedings in the last quarter and the forwards began to settle and take some sweet scores. The pick of these was a clever move when Paul Flynn set up Padraig Dooley for Pearses second goal and a glorious point from the left wing by Brian Burns. In all Pearses were the better side, playing good hurling when they finally settled their minds on the task at hand and should look forward with confidence to their next outing against Athleague Tremane next week. Team: Enda Colleran, Aidan Doorley, Sean Donoghue, Niall Flynn, Shane Berrigan, Kevin Flynn, John Mulvihill, Christy Sweeney (Capt.), John Galvin, Cathal Duffy, Anthony Sweeney, Brian Burns, David Loughnane, Tomás Seale, Paul Flynn. Subs Used: Padraig Dooley for Duffy, Mike Flynn for Paul Flynn, Kieran Sweeney for David Loughnane

U14 Feile Final Padraig Pearses 1:0 St. Dominics 1:1

On Sunday Evening 29th May we contested our first U14 A final in Knochrockery against the home side St. Dominics. Going into the game as slight favourites we failed to live up to expectations and the form of earlier rounds deserted us. We had our chances but just didn’t take them. Well done to St. Dominics and we wish them the very best of luck in Feile. Thanks to all the girls on the panel who gave it their best all year

Panel: Breda Carty, Linda Murray, Erica Connolly, Laura Barrett, Sarah Glynn (Capt), Christina Dolan, Karen Naughton, Orla Berrigan, Aine Egan, Siobhan Scott, Paula Kelly, Treasa Dooley, Gemma Kelly, Olivia Sweeney, Gina Goldrick, Elizabeth Daly, Shauna Finnerty, Lisa Kelly, Sarah Kelly, Tara Keogh, Sarah Grehan, Niamh Barrett, Alisha Keogh, Carol Kelly, Katie Green, Georgina Bruce, Niamh Ryan. Connacht U12 Ground Hurling Blitz 28/5/2005

Once again Padraig Pearses GAA Club facilitated a hugely successful Connacht U12 ground-hurling blitz. This year the competition had nineteen teams and they provided a feast of entertainment and drama for all those present on the day. The young hurlers of Pearses, as in the previous two years survived the day’s action in some style to make the final again against neighbours Four Roads, however once again they were to be disappointed in the final match. Their day started in bright fashion with a fine victory over St. Marys with fine scores coming from Neill Sweeney, a goal, and Tomás Ryan, a point in what was a comfortable win. They followed this up with good victories over Athleague and Oran with good performances from Shane O’ Rourke, Shane Carty, Darren Greene and David Murray particularly against Oran. The semi-final against Southern Gaels saw the Pearses men up their game again and they ran out easy winners with good performances from Ronan Kildea and Dominic Egan in the backs and Kevin Gavin and Kyle Feehily in attack. Goalkeeper Darren Shine also made some fine saves. The final proved a step too far as Four Roads proved that little bit stronger winning by 1-1 to 0-0 despite Pearses having two good goal chances. It was a disappointing end to what had been a very successful day and the panel deserve great credit for the way they played on the day. Congratulations to Pearses for the successful staging of the tournament and to Damien Curley for organising the day’s proceedings. Thanks to referees Aidan Sweeney, Ross Darcy and Darren Ryan and all those involved with food, transport and management. Well done to the Pearses team and their management of Padraig Dooley and Belinda Dooley and thanks to all the parents for their support.

Pearses Panel: Darren Shine, Ronan Kildea, Andrew Whelan, Dominic Egan, David Murray, Shane O’ Rourke, Shane Carty, Darren Greene, Kyle Feehily, Tomás Ryan, Neill Sweeney, Kevin Gavin, Shane Naughton, David Whelan, Kevin Sweeney

PADRAIG PEARSES GAA CLUB NOTES

8/5/2005 Roscommon Senior Hurling Championship Padraig Pearses -13  Oran 2-6

Padraig Pearses got their championship ambitions back on track with a hard fought victory over current county champions Oran. There were widespread changes to the side that capitulated so spectacularly against St. Dominics a week earlier. Pearses, playing with much more spirit and pride, lifted their game noticeably for this hugely significant encounter. More clinical finishing saw them lead by three points at half time and despite conceding a soft goal in injury time they held out for a deserved victory. Dara Mulvey returned to the starting line up and justified his selection with a ten point return including seven frees, a 65 and two vital scores from play. Alan Sweeney and Cathal Kelly also contributed to the winning score line with two and one point respectively. Alan Loughnane again led the cause in front of new full back John Mulvey. Pearses were also boosted by the return of Kenneth Glynn and Pat Downey to the side. Championship will recommence again in July giving Pearses time to take stock of their up and down start to the campaign.

Team: Christy Sweeney. Kenneth Glynn, John Mulvey, Sean Donoghue, Pat Downey, Alan Loughnane, David Loughnane, Robbie Donoghue, Mike Donoghue, Shane Sweeney, Alan Sweeney, Anthony Sweeney, Cathal Kelly, Kevin Flynn, Dara Mulvey.

1/5/2005 Roscommon Senior Hurling Championship Padraig Pearses -6  St. Dominics 2-11

Padraig pearses got off to the worst possible start in this years senior hurling championship when they were well beaten by a fired up St. Dominics side in the opening game of this years championship. The game was far from a classic as Pearses struggled to find any rhythm. The side captained by Alan Loughnane from centre back were nine points down at half time as Dominics scored two goals directly the result of poor Pearses defending. Pearses could only muster two points in the first half from an Alan Sweeney free and a Tomás Seale score from play. Despite having the aid of the wind in the second half they only added four points to that total, Seale and Sweeney with similar scores to those of the first half and two from substitute Dara Mulvey. Pearses did manage to curb the Dominics attack, limiting them to two points but it was of little consolation on a poor day for the Woodmount club.

Team: Christy Sweeney, Sean Donoghue, Robbie Donoghue, Martin Mulvey, Shane Berrigan, Alan Loughnane, David Loughnane, Shane Sweeney, Alan Sweeney, Cathal Kelly, Mike Donoghue, Gary Frehill, Tomás Seale, Anthony Sweeney, Brian Burns. Subs: Dara Mulvey, John Mulvey, Ollie Dolan

Hurling Preview 26/4/2005

Padraig Pearses will take on St. Dominics in the first round of the Roscommon Senior Hurling Championship on Sunday 1st of May at 3pm in Athleague. Pearses had to fight hard to secure a draw with the same opposition last year to book their place in the county semi finals. After the disappointment of last year, Pearses will again be hoping to provide a strong challenge for the Mickey Cuniffe Cup. If the closeness of last year’s championship is anything to go by this should be another tightly fought championship with several teams capable of toppling county champions Oran. Pearses have some injury worries as they prepare but they are hoping to be able to call on a blend of youth and experience for the first round on Sunday against an experienced Dominics side

Pearses Under 14 Footballers qualified for a place in this years Feile Final with well deserved win over Roscommon Gales in Roscommon on Tuesday evening last.

The foundation for the win was laid in the first half when playing against the breeze Pearses still managed to lead 1-1 to 0-3 at half time. Pearses half back line of Stephen Mc Manus, Shane Mulvey and Shane Dolan were brilliant in this half cutting out a lot of gales attacks, with Niall Daly and Alan Mannion winning a lot of ball at centerfield there was a plentiful supply to the forwards. Sean Ryan led the forwards well in this half with Arran Feehily also winning good possession.  At the start of the second half Niall Daly started to Dominate at centerfield and with James Kelly, Niall Tummalty, David Cullen, James Flynn all hitting top form Pearses added in the necessary scores to secure victory.

Camogie - Under 16’s County Junior Cup

Our Under 16’s played well to beat Oran in Woodmount on Wednesday last – 3rd round of the Championship.  Having been neaten in round 1 by St Dominic’s followed by a good win over Athleague in round 2. The first half was a very tight affair with little separating the sides. A more determined 2nd half performance by Pearses girls brought a well-deserved victory. As usual Katie Moran played with great confidence between the posts our fullback line Sarah Glynn, Triona Waters and Lisa Hannon gave great cover and cleared their lines well.Ericka Connolly, Emelda Ryan and Liza Duffy showed delightful skill and were a constant checkpoint for Oran attack. Helen Kenny and Aoife Mc Donnell were in fabulous form and played with a great array of skills defended and attached really well and gave a good supply of ball to the forwards.Siobhan Scott, Linda Sweeney and Sandra Naughton put in a display, fought for every ball and out together many fine moves.Full forwards Louise Egan, Elaine Egan and Amy Finnerty were very lively throughout and were a constant threat on the Oran goal.Others to feature were Rebecca Holland who took over Full Forward in 2nd half and showed versatility and great work rate. Deirdre Corbett came on in the Full Line and equally played her part with great intelligent play. Catherine Egan came on in the Half-Back line in the 2nd half and once again showed some fine foot work, defending well – Olivia Sweeney, Amy Duffy and Shauna Finnerty.Well Done Girls!

Camogie - County Junior League

This year Padraig Pearses appointed a Junior Team to facilitate all our players.

On Saturday 2nd April we played 1st round of junior league against Castletown Geogan of Westmeath in Woodwount.

Playing with the breeze – the first half Castletown Grogan started strongly and did most of the pressing. Great defensive work keeping them from scoring. A mix up in defence lead to a goal for Castletown Grogan just before half time.

The second half saw a much-improved Pearses performance – with a couple of chances going narrowly wide. Castletown Grogan hit for second goal midway through the 2nd half pouncing on another mix up.

Pearses fought back in the last quarter and got a goal Louise Egan after build up play a well earned free for foul on Aine Hogan on 20 metre line was blasted narrowly over the bar by Deirdre Sweeney in the dying moments of the game.

In goal Katie Moran made many fine saves, Beirne Dolan at full back made many fine clearances. Sharon Corbett played with power and passion in a solid backline with Lisa and Carmel Killeen growing in strength as the game progressed.

Midfielders Tara Mc Donnell, Helen Kenny and Clare Duignan fought like tigers against a very tough Castletown Grogan midfield.

Forward line of Denise Sweeney, Ethel Egan, Cathy Glennon and Caroline Corbett all tried really hard against a strong Castletown Grogan defence.

The introduction of Aine Hogan and Louise Egan and Aoife Mc Donnell a greater urgency at a time when fitness levels may have been lacking

All in all, a fine gutsy performance. Many Thanks to all the girls! Especially the new kids on the block Sharon, Caroline, Aine, Claire and Cathy.

This was a historical occasion of the girls – well done to all concerned.

We play St Dominic’s in our next game.
