RONAN BROWNE (uilleann pipes, flutes, vocals)

Widely regarded as one of the great virtuosos of the uilleann pipes, Ronan has carved out an international reputation both as concert performer and session musician.

Ronan is the piper on the original recording of RIVERDANCE and is also the original piper with the AFRO CELT SOUND SYSTEM, appearing on their first two top-selling albums.

From a very musical background, Ronán's grandmother was the great Delia Murphy, renowned Irish singing star of the 1930s and 40s, who recorded over 400 songs on 78s (If I Were a Blackbird, The Spinning Wheel, Three Lovely Lassies From Bannion). He began playing the pipes at the age of 7 and "has never looked back since." He was taught by, among others, Willie Clancy, the famous Co.Clare piper, and the King of the Pipers himself, Séamus Ennis. Fiddle players Denis Murphy and Tommy Potts have also played a strong role in forming his style. He teaches uilleann pipes at the most important of the annual summer schools of Irish music, the Willie Clancy School, in Miltown Malbay, Co.Clare. He also plays an array of flutes and whistles (including the low B flat flute and the Indian bansari) and the mandolin.

He has guested with a huge range of musicians, not only from the folk field, but also from the worlds of rock and jazz and further afield. These include, Sinéad O' Connor, U2's The Edge (theme for the T.V. series Bringing It All Back Home), Donal Lunney, Philip Donnelly, Taxi Mauve, Andy M.Stewart and Manus Lunney, Capercaillie, Scullion, New York rockers The Indigo Girls and Five Guys Named Mo, and jazzmen Tommy Halferty and Richie Buckley. With Michael Kamen (who scored films like Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves and Lethal Weapon) he created the score for the award-winning documentary The Dolphin's Gift, directed by Kim Kindersley. He has appeard on 8 albums and his C.D. with Clare fiddle legend, Peadar O' Lochlainn, The South-West Wind (Claddagh), was acclaimed best Irish traditional album in 1988. He is also the piper on the original chart-topping Riverdance.
