Scoil Carmel is pleased to announce the forthcoming production of the famous 1950s musical 'Calamity Jane'. It will be staged by teachers and students from the Transition Year group in the Scoil Carmel Gymnasium (not Mary Immaculate College of Education, as previously announced) on Monday, 26th and Tuesday 27th of March, 2007.

Set in the 19th Century American wild west, the musical tells with considerable artistic licence, it seems, the life story of Martha Jane Canary , who was a larger than life figure in that turbulent period of the American West. 'Calamity Jane' , as she became known, would hardly object to the exaggerated plot of the musical, as she herself was known to exaggerate, even fabricate some of her own exploits while she was still alive! The plot of the musical shows how the backwoods tom-boy, who loved huntin' and shootin', is eventually tamed and settles down to family life, well sort of! The 1953 film had Doris Day in the title role.

The musical is famous for some wonderful lyrics that have stood the test of time. Among these are:

'Windy City'

'The Black Hills of Dakota'

'Secret Love'

'The Deadwood Stage'

Tickets will be on sale from Monday, February 25th, (after the Mid-Term break). They cost €10 per adult and €6 per student. For inquiries call the school at 061-229511.
